Don't Make Me Use The Bat
okay, now note on these that I was so in and out distracted by politics + life tonight that I may or may not have seen half of this one, so these grades may be provisional to the point of possibly being inaccurate:

Cisco ( B ) -- a foot soldier in the smooth passing high efficiency running offense of the first half, did not have much impact after being held over to steady the kids late in the game. Think was intended to be a defensive cooler on Eric Gordon, but Gordon lit him, and us, up like a Christmas tree.

Thompson ( C+ ) -- got the start, and it was briefly yay! However nothing much changed with his game -- still playing too fast, out of control, flying around like a chicken with his head cut off. Had the huge quickness advantage over Paul Davis, who the Clips started in place of Camby tonight, and tried to use it a few times only to suffer his normal problems finishing inside -- in the end it might be nothing more complex than him being a small school guy not used to anybody inside being big enough to slap the ball away from him. In any case, solid numbers again, no defense again, lots of motion and slop, little impact again. What I don't know (debate) is why he did not play more minutes? Just his perfromance? Or were we really that desperate to get Kenny Thomas some time?

Miller ( A- ) -- not only did not get slapped around by Caveman Kaman this time (who did nothing all night), but was largely able to do whatever he wanted to out there and play into his comfort zone. Which always means for Brad jumpshots and freewheeling passing, and when he is able to slide into one of those grooves (rare since the Adelman years) the offense inevitably hums. Caught the Clippers napping on one play (okay, they were pretty much napping on every play), throwing the ball ahead on an out of bounds play 3/4 of the court to a wide open Kevin who coasted in for the slam.

Martin ( A+ ) -- let's see, a preseason run n' gun game where defense is a dirty word and Kevin is being checked by Ricky Davis?? Gee, this grade is a shocker. Not that Kevin appeared to be playing any better defense than anybody else, but he was scoring so easily it did not matter this time out. Got into the passing column as well as everybody joined the act.

Udrih ( B+ ) -- has run the offense so well these last couple of games, and this time had help setting therun and pass tone by Brad, Kevin, Cisco, and the entire Clippers defense. On the other end it was adifferent story, as it sometimes is. Beno vs. Jason Hart (Baron did not play)? Went about as you would expect. But one of the stories of the Clippers night was the mighty mite Mike Taylor, who ran around like a complete idiot out there as only a kiddie can do, but was highly effective with it while running circles around not just Beno, but everybody we put on him.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Brown ( C- ) -- showed flashes of his quickness and offensive potential slashing to the hoop, and once dropped off a nifty behind the back pass in the paint on the way through. But also turned it over a bunch again, and got out mighty-mited by Mike Taylor who lit him up along with everyone else and raised some questions about that defense again.

----------------------------------------------------------------

yes...the other grades I left off due to sleep/life:

Kenny ( A++ ) -- player of the game right here. Kevin was/is NOTHING compared to this man, and I look forward to seeing KT steal all of our kids' time and play the bulk of the PF minutes this year. His impact was palpable -- as soon as he came in, we went on a run, and it was Kenny playing Steve Nash who made the offense really heat up. Without him I doubt Kevin breaks double figures, and we likely lose by 30. Oddly did not board, which is strange given that that is kind of his thing, and he was playing far above Kenny Thomas standards in most other areas.

BJax ( B ) -- kind of a turn back the clock game in some ways, and kind of evidence why you can't turn back the clock in others. Was active and aggressive on offense in the old Bobby style, and got a little involved in the passing game as well on our best pasinig night in forever. Settled for too many jumpers, and forced some tough shots. Competed well on defense, but results were mixed. Not able to really slow either of the Clippers rookie guards who did all the damage.

Hawes ( ) --

You missed Bobby Jackson and Kenny Thomas Brick...Both had large roles this game, with Bobby playing wonderful ball for 2 quarters, and the reason we couldn't finish and lost in the 4th. Kenny Thomas actually played out of his mind offensively, but his board work is very rusty...I know no one cares about the play of our creaky veterans, but they did get large minutes this game, and had some impact, both good and bad...

I was at the game and up pretty close (all seats are close at spanos center)

Couple of observations:

Bobby Brown is darn quick. He is going to get some minutes and I thought he played pretty well. he can break a defense down simply by getting by his man almost at will.

Kenny Thomas played very well. He did not rebound and almost looked disinterested at trying to board. That being said, He played as well as anyone in 1st half and then didnt get back on the court until 4 or 5 minutes left in game. Just make him inactive every game this year if as personal reason is why he doesnt get minutes. No way is he not worthy of 10 minutes a game or more.

Thompson is much bigger than I thought. This guy is a beast. I am very excited about his potential. He needs to stay on his feet or he will foul out often. He goes for fakes all night long. he will be able to post up.

Green looked lost. You must have a confidence that makes you believe you can do anything on a basketball court. he looked like he had none and was willing to just causally move on the court with no real reason to be there. he is big and moves well, but i saw NO real hustle or motivation from him. I think it was like a deer in headlights and is probably just because he is young.

Spencer looked good but tries to do too many spin moves in traffic. he will win most 1 on 1 matchups though because he has such great low post moves and can use either hand. his left handed baby hook is sweet. he is going to be an outstanding player, but I am afraid he will never be more than a miller when it comes to rebounding.

Beno looks good to me always.

Our gaurd play will be very good.

Beno vs. Jason Hart (Baron did not play)?
I didn't catch the reason, but Baron didn't make the trip to Stockton. Neither did Al Thorton. Considering the Clips didn't have Camby either, it was a little scary they came back on us and won anyway. Thanks to two rookie players, essentially.

I know the Kings aren't going to be great on defense, but the lack of effort on that end was still a little disturbing. Our "defense" made Gordon look like a lock for ROY). While trying to institute a new-style offense, I hope Theus isn't letting work on defense slide too much.

Gordon was draining threes and a few were from deep behind the line. Sometimes players get it going and not much adefense can do. that was the case last night.

Also, it wasnt just bad defense, it was terrible offense late in the game that caused turnovers that gave the clipps easy baskets. You think Martin, Beno, Miller, and Cisco would be sitting late in the game and that same thing would happen if it were for real?

KT, not my favorite player, played pretty well. I'm not sure why he got so many minutes, and unless he's being showcased for a possible trade, I hope its not regular thing. I mentioned Mike Tayor as someone that I liked all the way back to the pre-draft camp. The kid can shoot the rock and he's quick. Eric Gordon is no surprise to anyone that watched a lot of college basketball. I'm sure Gary will attest to that. To me, he's a cross between Mitch Richmond and Dwayne Wade. High praise, but I think he can be that good.

I thought Spencer played pretty well tonight. He blocked three shots that I know about, and rebounded pretty well. I think that for the most part, he played within himself and just took what was there.

I agree with a previous analogy, that Greene looked lost out there. Welcome to the NBA big fellow. Thompson is copeing much better. He's still rushing his shot around the basket, and I agree with Bricky that he's still adjusting to having guys as big as he is around him on defense. His outside shot was more consistant in college, and he seems as though he's thinking about it too much instead of just catching and shooting.

I'm still impressed with Brown, but I would like him to shoot a little less and pass a little more. His ability to get into the paint should open up assist possibilities to him. BJax looked like the Bobby of old last night. It was fun watching him do his thing.

I thought Cisco played pretty well. He hit some clutch shots when the offense seemed to be going south, and he was the only one that gave Gordon anything to think about besides lining up his shots. Beno looked very good, and Sheldon was a non factor.

Miller looks as though he's in good shape and is playing very well. If he stays healthy, and Hawes continues to improve, particularly on defense, the Kings could win more games than I orginally thought. But, IF is for children. It was a fun game to watch though.

I'm encouraged by how the Hawes/Thompson combo is coming along.

Since the Portland game, Hawes has shown good defensive effort, had two 3 block games, and rebounded solidly. I don't think he'll ever be better than a solid to good rebounder, because he doesn't grab many beyond what he's "supposed" to get, but I think he's shown he isn't the sub-par rebounder that some have feared. His 20+ footers have been noted, but an equal portion of his scoring has come inside. He looks good on the block, and I'd just like to see a bit more emphasis on his post game.

I'm waiting for JT to put it all together, but I think he's shown the pieces that will make up a special player. He's rebounded in every appearance and has a chance to become a very good rebounder, because he both blocks out and pursues well outside his area. I knew he had the length, quickness and hands, but he's a better quick-leaper than I realized. He has all the makings of a Bosh-like faceup game with that quickness and ballhandling, and if he develops the post game to go with it (and we saw at least one nice post for the hook) the combination will be devastating. It was one thing to say that C-Webb could bring the ball up, but each long dribble looked like even money whether or not it would make it back up from the floor to his hand; by contrast, JT's dribble looks as smooth as a guard's. Improvement in finishing I think will come with experience and confidence. Defense is a work in progress, but with his quickness and length there's no reason he can't become a good defender. He just needs to learn about NBA defense and get stronger which will come with time, and it looks to me like he can carry a lot more muscle comfortably on his frame. It shows that he went through those recent growth spurts, and I would guess that the 6'11" measurement is closer to reality than the 250 lbs.

I don't think they really got into Gordon's grill. Of course a player can get hot, but I didn't see much defensive intensity from the Kings, either. That was disappointing to me. We were beat by two rookies, not the Clips vets. Cisco was in the game late, btw.

Yes, we had our starters sitting on the bench. On the other hand, they were without Baron Davis, Al Thorton and Marcus Camby the entire game. That won't happen in the regular season either.

Still, it was a fun game to watch. I think we have some talented youngsters to watch, to have hopes for. I'm excited to see how things go for the next couple of years.

Definitely a fun game to watch. The Kings pushed the ball up the court very well. The starters have played well every game. I think we have had double digits leads in all 4 preseason games. But the inexperience of our back ups show with the constant blown leads in the second half. Green, Thompson, and Brown have each shown that they have potential to put up the points, but too early for them to show consistancy. It's only four games, but that's all we have to go off of so far. :)
BTW, Spencer has done a good job of knocking down his J and getting to the boards since he was criticized after the Portland game.
