I know that Huerter and Monk are pure shooters, but a 36% chance at a three-pointer goes down to something like 20% when you are four feet or further from the line. Malik cannot be standing that far back for a catch-and-shoot. He has to get in position closer to the line when the ball is moving.

The coaching staff has to make that a point of emphasis for all the players. One reason Sabonis has been so successful this season is that he shoots right at the three-point line from nearly the same two spots every time. Consistency is a virtue.

The two main shooters, Fox and DeRozan, averaged 18.1 and 17.5 field goal attempts per game before tonight. Yet they are not looking to pass out when they are in tight spots, missing opportunities for uncontested "spray threes," game after game. That is one of the main reasons this team is not yet clicking. I doubt DeRozan has ever seen Murray or Monk go off the way they can, and he does not trust them yet.

This is going to take a while.

What does it say about the Kings when they were dominanted in all facets of the game today?
The Kings have a game plan (get those three point shots up whether they're falling or not) and they stick to it even when all evidence suggests they should try something else. I suppose the percentages support this plan as a long-term strategy but it sure is frustrating on a game by game basis. The "let's leave someone wide open for three on every possession" part of the game plan is harder to apologize for.

What does it say about the Kings when they were dominated in all facets of the game today? They didn't even have their #1 guy.
honestly for me it’s all about the missed threes. 3 total makes has to be one of the worst performances in the 3 pt era. (Id say from 2020 on)

I’d be interested to see what teams records are when they make 5 or less threes in a game.

Just one of those nights. Kings missed a ton of easy shots and i really didn’t see the Clips looking like the 04 Pistons out there.
It was a bad night, no doubt. But have to give credit where it is due. Ty Lue is amazing and he has got them playing hard. They have shored up their coaching ranks with a head coach level talent like JVG. Not surprised with their performances this year even after losing PG.

All time some of the worse 3 point shooting performances % wise.

1. Knicks 3/36 8.3%
2. Rockets 3/35 8.6%
3. Rockets 4/45 8.9%
4. Nets 3/33 9.1%
5. Blazers 3/32 9.4%
6. Pelicans 3/32 9.4%
7. Suns 3/32 9.4%
8. Celtics 4/42 9.5%
9. Pacers 3/30 10%
10. Bulls 3/30 10%
11. Hornets 4/36 11.1%
12. Kings 3/26 11.5%
Good thing Fox made that 1 or we would have been #1

don’t leave Fox and Malik off the hook.

Malik is 30.8% on 4.9 attempts
Fox is 29.1% on 6.9 attempts.

Keegan is 31.4% on 6.4 attempts
I don't believe for a second these are sticky shooting numbers. And no one should either.

So on one hand, that's very encouraging moving forward that we can still put wins on the board with this level of shooting. It's just how to get BACK to normalized shooting levels is the question.

We had like 4 open looks at 3 that we missed. Clippers had 12-16 open looks. Maybe watch film and see how they are defending the 3 and copy that. I mean damn it’s fn ridiculous
we had a lot more than 4 open looks. The Clips did have a bunch of open 3s, a lot of them were the spray 3 variety where there was some breakdown in the paint or offensive rebounds that were kicked out

I really don’t understand how terrible three point shooting seems to be contagious with this team. It is really a miracle this game was as close as it was. Can I just say watching a clippers game is definitely the worst in the nba.

yeh if you are historically bad from 3 and you get 7 less offensive boards you are lucky to not be completely blown out.

We have had more 3s than our opponents 3 times (against lakers, they had higher percentage, Utah and Portland.) We have tied once (Toronto) and then had 5 games where the other team had more threes and it’s been by a bunch not just one or 2

Did you notice the threes we took versus theirs? All their three point shooters were lined up and shooting in rhythm. We need to have more offensive sets rather than having the team figure it out via "read and react" every game. Somedays the players wouldn't have it like today. We should have repeatable plays that gets our shooters open at their favorite spots on the floor. The good news is that we're still a good offensive team and there is a good room for improvement.

This game sooo reminds me of the Lakers game - a slug in the mud. The only guy that played with pace in the 2nd half was Monk, who with 2:30 left in the 3rd actually had a fast break basket. Give the man a cupie doll. They couldn't even get to 100, which in today's NBA is like 80 of old. Pace leads to rhythm, which leads to better outside shooting, but that has just gone out the window. The insertion of iso-DDR, the diminution of Heurter's movement in the offense, , the hesitation-fest of Murray, the discordant offensive scheme of Brown, all contribute to the slug-in-the-mud kind of games that we've seen against the Lakers and the Clips and we will see in the future against similar teams unless Brown figures it out. I think the #5 offense in the NBA is a total mirage and doomed to collapse unless they do a lot more to insert more motion and pace in this offense and release the bondage they are currently in. The oh so essential Sabonis has done all he can in this offense to facilitate motion and pace, but one guy isn't going to cut it on a regular basis against the more physical teams they are going to face.

yeh the Clips muck things up on defense with length and then rely on Harden and Powell to foul bait the whole game. They live at the line and you can’t guard them tight because they will get a thousand whistles. It’s gross and the worst product aesthetically in the league. Deebo does it too in some ways but he is at least trying to score.

Right on. The Lakers did the exact same thing but we were able to release the shackles early enough to make it close. Today, there was no adjustment until it was too late. The blueprint to defend the Kings is out now. It's up to Jay Triano to make the adjustments.

DDR has been great for us, but he needs to do a better job of looking for shooters. Reward your teammates with good looks and let them get into a rhythm with you. There's going to be nights where he's not automatic and I think that's where this team can learn to be more effective as an offensive unit. We should be a little less reliant on him to carry our offense.

Fox's fingers must be really bothering him because his handles seem very loose this year. What happened to his down-hill attacking? It's been missing for a couple seasons now. It seems like the ball gets poked away as he's driving, or he's opting for that brake and pop 4ft shot. We need him to attack the rim aggressively because it opens the floor to the spray 3s everyone keeps bringing up.

Maybe these two things can help our shooters find their shot?

The minutes played for our starters are a bit misleading tonight because there was a ton of stoppage time throughout the game, but I think Kevin needs to see more than 20mins, and we don't need to shave off Keon's minutes for that to happen.

Brown needs to find a way to introduce some minutes for McDermott. He's the best shooter on our team that severely needs 3pt shooting.

We are now last in the league in 3pt shooting overall and we have the worst percentage on open 3s. If everything else we are doing (defense, free throws, paint scoring etc) holds steady and we get back to league average from 3 we are going to be really good this year.

The bench is officially bad offensively, wonder if switching Kev for Ellis could help? Would Kev get more shots if he was coming off the bench?
