Pre-draft workout confusion????

KingsCity

Prospect
So we have a 5th pick in the lottery and we are working out a bunch of guys well below that pick. There were only 2 guys we worked out that were top 5 worthy which was Andre Drummond and Damian Lillard. No way we are picking Lillard because we don't need a pg atm if reke is expected to move back to that position and Drummond is a maybe but he might not even fall to us. Is GP going to trade the pick or what?? No mkg, beal, trob or barnes workout? I would love to pick any one of those guys with our pick instead of some crappy guys that aren't guaranteed to be legit. If we trade then I really hope it's for a veteran in gay, iggy or etc that can actually help our team.

What do you guys think GP is thinking?

He's probably thinking he's going to work out everyone and see first hand how they look. It's not like he can instantly schedule workouts for top tier prospects at his leisure. These things must be scheduled with the agents/draftee's who all have people wanting to see them.

Sigh, not another one of these threads. For goodness sake CHILL we are obviously going to bring in the top 5 guys later on!

Actually, I read this point from someone else today, and combined with the earlier reports that agents would keep their players away from Sac given the reputation of the franchise, this guy asked whether or not agents of the top 4-5 guys are actively avoiding us, which I think is a distinct possibility.

Before it was just a reports, yet at this point, other than Drummond not a single one one Beal, Robinson, MKG, Barnes have given any indication they will workout for us, or have we had group workouts featuring Leonard, Zeller, Henson and Terrance/Perry Jones, on the level Det has picking 9th.

Beal has specifically said he won't workout for anyone beyond the Top 4, so he's out. The others...be a bizarre situation if our rep got so bad we were totally frozen out. Pretty much unprecedented since agents always want to maintain relationships and keep options open for their entire stable of clients, not jsut draft kids.

The draft is still 10 days away... should be enough time to get the top guys in here.. and bring some people back..

The list for tomorrow isn't going to help matters. It looks like another batch of second rounders.

Even if you are considering a trade with the #5, they should invite in the guys likely available at #5 to cover all bases. And if there is some sort of freeze out being done by the agents, then don't take it personally. A lot of Kings fans are considering that very same thing and it's all fallout from the Maloofery.

Sure seems like Petrie is working behind the scenes to trade down for a starting PG or SF and a slot in the 8-16 range where there are some good bigs for building up the Kings bench. Maybe even another second round choice where there may be another gem.

I could see New Orleans interest in Marcus Thornton. He'll be a good offensive pair with Davis if Gordon goes somewhere else.

I'll offer Thornton to the Hornets for Ariza and their 10th.
Aminu is growing there and could eventually replace Ariza.

With the 10th I'll have the Kings pick either Henson or T.Jones.
And get Lillard with our 5th.

And there you go, we drafted players that worked out with us. :)

PG - Lillard, IT, Jimmer
SG - Evans, Salmons, Garcia
SF - Ariza, Outlaw, Honeycutt
PF - T.Jones or Henson, resigned-JT,Hayes
C - DMC, Whiteside

Can't see Petrie showing his hands like this, though. I don't care if you plan on moving down in the draft, you still work out someone who MIGHT be there at #5.

Maybe all four of Beal, Robinson, MKG and Barnes confident they will go top-4? :D

The math doesn't add up of course, but I really think something like this is going on. Because 2-6 is so up in the air right now all of these guys have reason to believe they might go 2,3, or 4. And if you have it in your head that that's your range than it's a poker match right now to see who blinks first and agrees to a workout with another team. I think Kidd-Gilchrist said he was going to workout with Jersey cause he's from there (though they're technically not Jersey anymore) but other than that the agents aren't budging so far. It's frustrating but it shouldn't really matter. All four of them have been on the scouting radar for years now. It'll be interesting to see if Drummond's approach of working out for everyone pays off for him. He's still got a shot at the #2 spot as well, whether it's Charlotte or some other team making the pick.

Are any of them going to Portland (6th pick) ? If so, then that is a sure indication that their agents are deliberately, trying to steer them away from Sac. Regardless, if we stay at five, then Petrie needs to draft whoever he thinks is the best player, whether they worked out with us or not. That includes Beal.

And what happens if you draft a player and he does a Steve Francis?!

Beal and MKG had tentative agrrement to workout for Blazers but cancelled. So it seems like they are confident in top-4 seletion. Beal didn't struggle against Barnes' length in Cleveland so it seems Robinson is front-runner for Charlotte, MKG is new the new leader in Washington (Beal appears to be close second) and Beal is the favorite in Cleveland.

I think this has more to do with posturing than deliberate avoidance at this point, after all everyone's working out for Charlotte. But if you add it all up there are some pretty compelling reasons to avoid Sacramento. Evans has been jerked around with his position and trade rumors. Cousins has been jerked around with the front office allowing Westphal to call him out unfairly. The league perception right now is that Geoff Petrie isn't doing a very good job as the GM and the front office is on auto-pilot. The owners are trying to move the team and/or might be going bankrupt. There's been a revolving door of head coaches for the last 5 years. The arena is a slowly deteriorating heap. We're an absolute train wreck right now. Would you willingly sign yourself up for that? Somebody will though since it's still an NBA paycheck. And some of these problems will take care of themselves if the team starts winning. The others basically start and stop with ownership and, well, David Stern. ;)

Truth be told, removing all emotions associated with the Kings, if I was a college kid in this draft predicted to go top 5 or 6, the last place I would want to end up in would be Sacramento precisely for the reasons you have outlined. I would rather go anywhere else and yes this does include places like Charlotte.

Unfortunately, we have hit rock bottom as a franchise and it all points to one thing...finances and ability to spend like other NBA teams.

is there nobody in the draft who supported the kings as a boy :(....

Out of the "top 6" we have had two (barnes and Drmmond) in and one deffenatly not coming (Davis)... right??

so that leaves

Beal- somone said not going to anyone out of top 3 or 4 ?? (have i got that right)
MKG- been at a few of the outher teams hasnt he?
T-Rob- working out with drummond today haven seen him anywhere else tough?

Anyone know who these guys have worked out for??

They said agents are finally catching on that destination >>> higher draft pick. The Kings are stacked with young players at almost every position but SF and PF and no agent wants to see their top 5 pick have to fight for minutes. But Barnes not coming in would be strange because he's probably the likeliest to drop I would think.

Already been hasnt he??

Very uninspiring workouts again today. I don't get it, even if they are for the second round. None of these guys are good enough to make it in the NBA. Also, it seems the Kings are putting an emphasis on seniors and older college players. Nothing wrong with drafting a senior, but focusing solely on them in workouts is idiotic. If the Kings FO wants to add vets, you do it through FA, not the draft!!

I'll be very annoyed if we just waste a second round pick. There will be some very good prospects available at that pick. Would not at all be surprised to see GP lazily take some random guy he worked out. We still have many top prospects to get in, as well as all the good prospects who are projected to be available in the second. Then again, could easily see us selling our second rounder.

Yeah, with as of right now:

Cousins
Reke
Thornton
IT
Salmons
Outlaw
Hayes
Garcia
Honeycutt
Whiteside
Jimmer

that's 11 guys already under contract. + a first rounder would be 12. + trying to resign JT would be 13. That would still leave out TWill who would be 14...

there will be moves made this summer, but it would be pretty easy to see how we might be looking to consolidate rather than add another young body onto an already overstuffed roster

I think it's right for the F/O to expect another step forward from Cousins this season, If Tyreke is put in the right places to succeed we may also see him return to his best. IT can hopefully take some steps forward, Jimmer may be able to make some baby steps after Summer League, same with Tyler. I don't see why it's a bad thing to focus on what we've got rather than another prospect.

I think Barnes could certainly help us, it'd be a shame if we dont get a look at him up close, Beal - for me thats a whatever. Robinson, projected way above our pick mostly so probably agents doing, same with MKG. I only watch the tournament usually but i like the look of Terrence Jones, intriguing.

Yesterday i thought Robert Sacre was an infectious kind of personality, vocal on the court, funny off it, 7'0, appeared to manhandle that guy who was guarding him.

There's one other workout the Kings had that is not on that list....Tyreke Evans. Does GP feel he can count on Tyreke heading in the right direction this offseason? His time with Geoff is probably informing the Kings draft (and trade) strategy.

Err...or more like, as stated, Tyreke being in town and working with Petrie on his jump shot and then when he goes to LA he will work with Mitch Richmond on the jump shot!

Reading too much into it I think!

It certainly can't hurt.
