Darius is too limited.
Thomas is too small.
Skinner is a possibility, but unless Brad explodes that means we really only have marginal offensive punch on the frontline.
If we keep Brad, and I think he's fairly high up there on the list of guys likely, but not assured, of being back, then he just has to be surrounded by players who can defend the interior (not just one on one, but guys who can make a difference by protecting the rim), and you could really use a post player in there as well (whihc Brad also can't provide). His weaknesses were nicely covered up in Indiana by being paired with Jermaine O'Neal. So as long as we just trade for Jermaine, problem solved.
LOT of big men available this summer, and that's before we even get into the anticipated trades we might make to cash in our riffraff. Big man free agents who could help either as a starter or backup:
Tyson Chandler (R)
Eddy Curry (R)
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Stromile Swift
Dan Gadzuric (R)
Eddie Griffin (R)
Samuel Dalembert (R)
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Reggie Evans (R)
Vladimir Radmonovic (R)
Donyell Marshall
Kwame Brown (R)
Antoine Walker
Now, not all of those guys are true starters themselves. In fact I would say a lot of them are closer to 6th men type with breakout potential. But most on that list have size (I included Walker, Radmonovic + Rahim just for the hell of it), and we really need that up front. Brad, Darius and Peja all play smaller than they are, and Thomas and Corliss just ARE small. In our peak years we used to combine a 7'1" long center with a 6'9" athletic long-armed big-handed PF and a 6'11" banger off the bench (alongside a 6'10" SF/PF off the bench as well). Good for 25rebs, 4+blks, post presence etc. Now in our later years we've gotten small and unathletic, and if that's not corrected this summer the window really is finally shut.
Thing is, due to our cap situation it will be hard for us to be players in the FA market except via sign and trades. But that's ok -- kind of what I think the Webber trade was designed for us to do. Allow us to cash in various chips and try to get back better ones.
