I would like to see Sacramento trade Kevin Huerter to Charlotte for Nic Richards and Cody Martin. That way you clear the logjam at guard and get both a wing and a backup center, exactly what the team needs right now.
Monte McNair needs to move sooner rather than later with teams like the Hornets and Wizards holding fire sales.
So I was playing around with Spotrac’s trade machine, and it seems I might have found a way to trade for John Collins without giving up Trey Lyles (I don’t really understand how the trade is legal though so I’m cautiously optimistic). Below is the framework of the trade…
John Collins
Patty Mills
for
Kevin Huerter
Colby Jones
Jordan McLaughlin
Doug McDermott
The Jazz would have to cut two players on their roster to make it work but I think they have two good options: Drew Eubanks and Svi Mykhailiuk. Both are 27 years old, don’t have major roles with the team, and have unguaranteed deals next season (meaning if they are waived this season, they don’t owe them anything next year).
That would allow us to have a really solid 9 man rotation of Fox, Monk, Ellis, Carter, DeRozan, Murray, Lyles, Collins, & Sabonis, and leave our depth chart as…
PG - Fox / Monk / Mills
SG - Ellis / Carter
SF - DeRozan / Crowder
PF - Murray / Lyles
C - Sabonis / Collins / Len
I still don’t think attaching our 2029 2nd to that package is enticing enough for UTA to accept. We’ll probably have to work with ATL to free up our other 2nds by lessening the protection on our 1st round pick due to them. That would allow us to attach our 2026 SAC 2nd, 2027 SAC 2nd, and 2029 SAC 2nd to that package which I think has a good chance at being accepted by UTA.
Scratch that. Too late once again.
Collins is the better fit among players discussed in trades. Unfortunately, dealing with Ainge is often a waste of time due to his greedy demands.
Also, Collins is effectively an expiring contract as he has a player option for next year that he will opt out of in favour of a longer deal. It may become a few months rental if we have cannot afford to pony up the cash.
I’m not convinced at all that he’ll opt out. Especially under the current CBA. To put it in perspective, he’ll be making more money than DeRozan next year if he opts in. If he does opt out, my guess would be that he’s looking at a $8-15 mil/year deal for 3-4 years. I think he’s better off opting in and taking the big payday for a year and trying to sign a smaller, multi year deal the following offseason.

He would come off the bench for all of the backup PF/C minutes and maybe get extra time as the PF with Keegan at the 3. Actually have a biggish lineup from time to time. He could easily get 24-30 min a gameCollins is super super good, but sort of a weird fit here. He's too good to come off the bench. So are you benching Keegan? Derozan? Monk?
I’m more concerned with all the Fox to Houston talk. It’s being mentioned to much for me as I don’t like the immediate return. It’s leaned towards the future

Who are you benching for any good wing/forward that they acquire in trade?
Well yeah, that's sort of the point. Everyone wants this magical wing who's going to fix all our problems, but who available is actually better than Keegan or DeRozan?
In a perfect world without ego's, I'd go:
Fox
Keon
Keegan
DDR
Domas
With
Carter
Monk
Collins
Collins runs all your small-ball 5 and a bunch of time next to Domas too. Basically the super Lyles role.
I don’t like it when most the rumours I read are just FVV, Sheppard and picks for Fox,I’m more concerned with all the Fox to Houston talk. It’s being mentioned to much for me as I don’t like the immediate return. It’s leaned towards the future
Looks good to me. So then Collins is not too good to come off the bench? Monk wasn't too good to come off the bench and still should be, for better balance.
Let Collins compete for a starting spot for next season. Maybe they decide to make DeRozan a 6th man later on
—————————Since we only have one second rounder isn’t it gonna take a first to get Collins? I would still do it if we are keeping Lyle’s
The only reason to trade Fox is if you expect to be awful next year, and you fear he'll leave. He's loyal and just has the same thoughts anyone would have. And that's not what we're doing. We have an excellent four man backcourt, and a great starting frontcourt. We should be all in on filling out our frontcourt depth, to see the potential of what has been building come to fruition. Trade for Collins. Find a second frontcourt player, if not by the deadline, in the off season; and we are fully built. In the long run, I trust this team's talent.I’m more concerned with all the Fox to Houston talk. It’s being mentioned to much for me as I don’t like the immediate return. This deal doesn't get it done without Smith, Whitmore or Eason. The latter is supposedly "off the table" so that should allow one of the others to come back.I don’t like it when most the rumours I read are just FVV, Sheppard and picks for Fox,
I wouldn’t mind Sheppard at all but Fred, what the hell would we want another over paid guard for when what we need is some of their young wing players.
I go back and forth on Collins. He likely opts in but I don’t think it’s out of the question for a team to come in and offer say 3 for 60. If he gets a starting job is that enough for him to opt out? Dunno. Fans want wings/size but Collins is considered an average defender and not a rim protector. I’m not even sure he is better defensively than Lyles, he does have more perimeter defensive ability and is obviously a much better offensive player. If you are giving up a first you probably need to get seconds back and if it’s protected pick you now have your future tied up for a bunch of years. Like if it’s a ‘27 first you basically would not have a first to trade moving forward.
