Just out of curiosity, where does one go to snap pictures of bald eagles and what lens was that taken with?

It just looks like a wild shot. It's actually the Houston Zoo. It wasn't a DSLR either. It was taken with a Canon SX100IS point and shoot. I just got a DSLR (Olympus) the other day. Here's a sunset shot I took.

I like the Canon SX100IS a lot. For 95% of shots you'd like to capture it works great. It's also fantastic to have a quality camera that you can take everywhere. I bought an Olympus E-410 (DSLR) for the interchangable lenses and a little better sensitivity to light. I'm yet to capture anything that wasn't possible on the Canon.

Just for reference - here's a few dodgeball shots, not sure if I've posted any before:

Somewhat worth noting all these were taken in crappy middle school gym lighting with no flash (seems kind of lame to flash someone trying to catch/dodge multiple balls at 60+ mph) so I usually rely on a fast prime lens wide open at 1/500 or faster shutter speeds.

Shutter speed was viaried depending on the conditions. Generally around 1/160, 4.5 aperature at ISO 400. That was with zoom fully expected. You could probably get away with 1/320 at a 3.2 aperature without the zoom in that lighting.

It was a 50mm. Pentax, so I think the crop is 1.5 vs. Canon's 1.6, and then a fair amount of cropping from there. I've been thinking about getting a 70 or 77mm prime when I can afford it but I'd also like something really wide for car shows. Such an evily expensive hobby.

Sigma makes a stellar 2.8f 105mm prime that doubles as a macro lens. It could give you some distance and still give you the aperature you need to get enough light for your shutter speed requirements.

We were having lunch at Olitas on Santa Cruz Wharf at a bar table next to a waterside window. I looked down and there 25 ft away directly below us was an otter have HIS lunch!!!

Here is a pic today of a plane I caught flying over because of the fires we had near my home in Elk Grove.

ALMOST caught the helicopter. It was flying about 50ft over my house... DAMN!!

Anyway, I did get the plane, and because of the wind gusts I got a good flag shot with the sun.. I still need to work out a way to crop the house tho.



Since I had my camera out I decided to take a shot of some flowers..

My camera is pretty old. It's like 3mp and was bought in 2001-2002
