Play the Lottery

Whatever pick we get, I hope we just take the most talented player available.

Drafting for specific needs instead of drafting for top talent is always a sure way to fail.

Just look at the #2 picks of the 1984 and 2003 drafts.

To the pistons credit, Darko's upside was considered the second best in the draft at the time; while it was partially a need pick because detroit lacked depth in the froncourt and they also could wait on a young prospect, Darko would have been the consensus two for a lot of teams.

Or Hawes... the franchise has portrayed him as a need pick.
In early May, Kings.com conducted a poll where 88 percent of respondents thought the Kings should select either a power forward or a center in the draft. Looks like Kings fans just got their wish.

We could have picked Thornton instead, who was arguably the BPA, but who would probably have ended up riding the pine a lot. Not as much as the unneeded Gerald Wallace, maybe, but a lot more than Thornton's abilities deserves.

But oh, wait, Hawes isn't regarded as a disaster, is he?

In other words, I'm calling shenanigans on having a manager's wild guess at BPA always overrule need, however obvious that need may be. I don't think it's that simple.

BUT, this year it doesn't matter. If you look at any of the major mock drafts, 9-10 out of the top 12 are either bigs or play PG. So guesses at BPA are very likely to also fit need, and in the event that they didn't, the difference in perceived quality between a badly needed player and a totally unneeded one would be slight.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get another kings.com poll in the next couple of weeks. The fans will all vote for need, of course, the draft will fulfill at least one of those needs, and MS&E's PR people can tell us how we got our wish again.

Thornton is completely different than Hawes. He may have been the BPA at the time but there is no question that Hawes had and has a much higher ceiling.

Some players develop steadily for several years, others barely at all. Until at least one of them has finished their career as a player, there will always be questions.

I got 3rd with Jerryd Bayless selected!

Which begs the interesting question. If by some silly chance we end up with the 1st pick who would Petrie select?!

Personally, I would go with Rose but I have a funny feeling that Petrie might go with Beasley!

Beasley. His resemblance to Duncan is uncanny.

Besides the fact that both of them play PF, I don't see the resemblance at all. Beasley is more of a Amare Stoudamire type, but even that isn't the best comparison. Maybe a slightly bigger Carmelo? Someone I work with described Beasley as a Marion/Carmelo hybrid. I admittedly didn't watch enough of his games as I should of this year, but I've never heard or seen anything that reminded me of Tim Duncan.

Interesting that Chad Ford thinks we'd take Bayless over Lopez. I'm not so sure who I'd go with at #3.

Anyone else curious what he thinks our big board looks like? From what I've seen posted here, he figures it's something along the lines of:

1. Beasley
2. Rose
3. Bayless
....
Augustin
Westbrook
Jordan
Speights
Arthur
Gallinari

I guess this based on who he has us picking when certain players are available. Anyone played enough to fill in the gaps from other scenarios?

You take Bayless ten times out of ten over Brook Lopez. Lopez IMO is a nice player, but will be considered a BUST because his value is over inflated into the lottery. He should be in the 12-18 range, NOT the 3-6 range.

Actually I think I take Mayo at 3, I think he's got the best passing/court vision of anyone in the draft after Rose. He still has potential to be a pretty good PG, which he was projected to be out of HS.

I was thinking the same thing. Don't know why Mayo is listed so low on some draft sites. Also, I'm not entirely sold on Lopez yet.

I only really check nbadraft.net and DX, so I don't know where he routinely is but he did disappoint after so much hype coming out of HS. However he has tremendous passing and vision, and even though he's going to be a shoot first guard; he can still easily re-capture that PG potential he had coming out of HS. He didn't get much of a chance to show it off with the team he had. He needs to improve his ball handling and decision making though.

I would take Mayo with the 3rd if given the chance. I think he has the potential to be an outstanding player.

Now the player that Beasley is the most similar to is Carmelo Anthony IMO. I saw quite a few K-State games and they are very similar.

Agree 100%. I haven't seen Beasley play a whole lot, but when I did I thought of Melo

Beasley is a way better rebounder then carmelo is, and I think might be stronger than him. also a better shooter. lol.......and his handle looks alot better.

Number 1. Who ever thinks Beasley looks like Duncan, has been smoking something.
Number 2. Lopez is going to be better than a lot of you think. And, If I had to pick someone who reminded me of Duncan, it would be him. Not trying to lay that mantel on him however.
Number 3. If were lucky enough to get the first pick, I would consider trading the pick to the Knicks for their pick, and David Lee. Or to Memphis for both their first round picks.
Either way, we wouldn't drop very far, and we would pick up another peice to the puzzle.
Otherwise, draft Rose and be done with it.
