Petrie.....Anthony Randolph

Ok, we all know petrie said he would never pick a player he doesnt workout, yet what if Anthony Randolph is still there... he is a project..

For the record. I like 1. Darrell Arthur 2.Jason Thompson 3. Roy Hibbert

but I think in like 3 years Randolph could be a GREAT player.
 
I could see Randolph being good if he gains about 20 pounds. Great shotblocker, and good rebounder. I'd rather have him then Arthur, I can say that much.

Of course a SF is the last thing this team needs. But Petrie seems to go BPA a lot. Tomorrow is going to be interesting.
 
He's 6'10"/6'11" and only 19, so if he grows into his body its possible he could end up a mobile PF rather than SF. If he were 22 and still scrawny that would be a huge issue (although even with Kevin we've seen that a scrawny guy can add a little muscle just by getting into a workout regime). But at Randolph's age he could put on 20lbs just by trading in his boy's body for a grown man's body.
 
Yeah I didnt even think about the age thing. When I was 18 I was 6'1 and only 135. By the time I hit 20 I was all the way up to a whopping 160.. And that was just with a benchpress and unhealthy amounts of protein shakes. No reason why Randolph cant do the same with the resources provided by a NBA basketball team.

He'd still be scrawny...But then again so is KG

Jordan and Randolph are both young and will grow into their bodies and put on weight when working with and NBA squad. I would be happy with either on of those picks.

Randoff could probably contribute in some fashion in a year or two. With Jordan It could be three or four years. It could be never.. He scares me the most of any of the draftee's out there. Some scouts think he's no better than a second round selection but will be chosen higher because of his long term potential. Not my opinion, thiers..
 
I still think Randolph has a huge amount of bust potential, but at this point I'd be fine with the pick. This is such a weird draft, and at least Randolph is big, athletic and coordinated. Who knows whether he'll develop, but a Randolph pick would at least represent swinging for the fences rather than trying to hit a single. And let's face it, we need a home run.
 
The Bigs vs. Randolph

Randolph - a risk worth taking at 12 who starts to help this year but a risk
Arthur - a risk worth taking around 25-30
McGee - a risk maybe worth taking at 12-16 but 2 years off to contribute much
Thompson - smaller risk but a push for #12 or is he a GP fav?
Speights - lot of talent but can he help this year off bench?
Hibbert and Koufos - no interest to me > slow lateral, no quickness. We have one of those now with 2 more years to pay him.
Ajinca - amazing athlete but 2 yrs to help
Jordan - workouts have impressed and stock rising


NBA rankings have Hibbert, McGee and Jordan at 23 and lower. But can even GP find a big to help in the 24-32 range should they trade down?
 
As I've said before I would rather take Jordan over Randolph as both are extremely raw but IMO Jordan has a much higher ceiling than Randolph. It also is probably more likely they take Jordan now that he has actually worked out for the Kings and look great...apparantely.
 
Jordan would have to make a catastrophic improvement in the skills department for him to be able to play PF which is the position we need. Randolph needs to add weight and perfect his shooting touch, much more likely he can play PF than Jordan would.
 
I'd probably prefer Randolph to Jordan too, but with both players you're going to have to wait a minimum of 3 yrs before they start showing what they can do, at least.

I keep seeing "This guy has potential, but he's going to take a year or two before contributing." People are seriously underestimating how long it takes for some of these "projects" to work themselves out, if ever. It usually takes at least 3. In my eyes, if you've established yourself after year 2 in the league, you never were a project.

I agree and we can afford to wait. There is no real safe picks that are worthwhile at our slot anyways, I'd rather just go for the homerun and hope we get at least somewhat of an impact starter down the line.

Even if Randolph fails to become a PF, which is a very possible I outcome I admit he still projects to be a quality 3. Yes, a position that is crowded at the moment but it's still open IMO.

I actually see Randolph as more of a 3 than a 4. But then again, he is an excellent rebounder so maybe he will be a 4. But with his speed, size and just the way he plays, to me he looks to be more of a 3. If he develops at all, he's going to be a nightmare for defenders to match up with. He'll be bigger than most 3s, and far quicker than most 4s. As pointed out, however, strength is an issue. He doesn't have a particularly big frame to add weight but he should be able to add 20 lbs of muscle and that should be enough for him to match up with other 3s.

Yea, he probably is more of a 3 than I would care to admit, but I think he can add enough strength to play the 4 in small run n gun lineups. Even if he does end up as a 3, he's not going to be your typical 3, he'll be multi-faceted with triple threat skills. He can give you probably 16-18 ppg with 6-8 rpg 4-5 apg with 1.5 bpg. That's awesome potential, and he definitely has Prince-esque tools on the defensive end. He's raw but he's got the makings of a really nice mid range game and he's an explosive finisher. At first he'll have a hard time finishing under contact, but once he fills out a little it should come easier. He did pretty well on the bench press in the combine for his frame, so it's reasonable to assume he can build up some decent upper body strength.

I've stated many times that it takes a big no less than 3 yr's to develop. Sometimes longer. Jordan is a minimum of 3 yrs away and probably 4 to 5 before he resembles anything like a force at his position. I can see Randoff contributing in a year and being a pretty good player in 3 yr's. Randoff may become a PF at some pt, but I see him as more of a Rashard Lewis type of player. He falls in love with the three pt shot a little too much. Contrary to Amicks collumn, I just don't see Petrie drafting someone he hasn't had a chance to bring in and work out.

I think this is the guy I am now pulling for us to get.

He might be the best player for us in the magical 2010 season that Petrie has been illuding to.

I'm willing to bet with anyone here that it will be closer to 2015 than 2010 by the time we next compete. I don't see why 2010 is the year people think things will magically look up. I'd love for someone to explain it to me. Cap space means nothing if you have a crappy team that is old, with no star wanting to come. And even if he does come, the supporting cast won't be good enough. Of course, this is all assuming we continue with our 12th pick routine year in year out, along with signing pointless MLE players.

I'd be fine with that if Augustin is still there. I'd take Augustin over Randolph, and I like Randolph. Despite his size, I really do believe Augustin will be special. I think he could be the shock of the draft.

There is sense of sarcasm in my post. I don't think Petrie has much of a plan, but if his plan is to be good again in 2010, Randolph is my favorite option.

I sensed that, I wasn't aiming my reply at you, I was aiming it at the general premise around here that all will suddenly be well in 2010. Which is what you were being sarcastic about.

I think Petrie puts more weight on guys who can play now; he puts less weight on athletic raw potential, especially this high in the draft. Also Randolph is talked about as being a high risk prospect. The last thing Petrie likes is risk. He prides himself on getting very few busts in the draft. For all of the above, I doubt he picks Randolph.
 
I think the only way Petrie drafts Randolph is if he's sure that Randolph can be a permanent PF. The Kings are stacked at SF which is probably a big reason that he didn't work out here.

Even if after next year the Kings lose Artest and somehow either Salmons or Garcia is traded then we still have one solid SF to start and decent backup SFs are a dime a dozen in this league.

Without a workout I'm not sure how Petrie can get that assurance, especially with such a raw prospect.
