I think it started with the financial straights the Wizards are in plus some things Wall said.Is all this Otto Porter Jr trade talk based on anything or just trade ideas being thrown out?
I recon related to age, position, lack of injury history, and complimentary skill set he's about the most interesting of all target players mentioned.
...I didn't realize they were only saving 10million. yeah, this makes no sense for Washington then lol. Unless they were setting up 2018/2019 FA before Wall's super duper max.Even with a whole slew of salary related hoops to jump through, I think this Porter trade is still more likely than even one of the guys you listed signing with us as a free agent. All of them are restricted status for one thing. And even if we give them an offer so big that their current team doesn't want to match (which is probably unwise) they're not picking us. We might have a shot at Hezonja (unrestricted, some connection to Peja) and we might have a shot at somebody who wants a short-term contract to try and rebuild value (Greg Monroe maybe?) but those options aren't going to be reasons to turn down Otto Porter.
If we do want this to happen though, I'm pretty sure Mahinmi has to be included. Porter is a good player and they're a playoff team with their current group so there must be a pretty compelling reason (like 40 million off the salary cap) for them to make a deal. Grunfeld has to feel like he can get far enough under the cap to potentially sign an impact player so they don't lose ground. Even so, I'm sure his preference would be to trade for an established player rather than cap space because even a lopsided trade like this one only puts them 10 million under the cap for next year. They need to make changes somehow but it's hard to see where they can realistically go from where they are now.

I think the wizards will look to trade Wall. Possible in a deal that could get them Young around draft time?
I’d definitely consider this. If we are lucky in the lottery and draft Oden, then this becomes an obvious choice for me.
Trading Wall is probably their best move. His contract is astronomical, he's got name recognition and All-Star cred so they can probably find a taker anyway, and they'd be better off building around two shooters in Beal and Porter especially since they'd still have Satoransky at PG who kept them in the playoff hunt this season while Wall was injured. Ernie Grunfeld is not known for making smart moves though. Wall is a former first overall pick and while a bolder GM wouldn't care about that, I don't see Grunfeld throwing in the towel. He's going to probably keep everybody and keep losing in the first round every year.
I should clarify that they would be saving a lot more than 10 million in this trade. The Wizards just became a luxury tax paying team this year for the first time in their history. They're already in luxury tax territory for next season without adding any contracts this summer and that's coming off a first round playoff loss. With 42 million going out and only 7.5 million coming in they're saving something like 35 million the next two seasons plus whatever the tax penalty would have been. They're so far over the cap that dropping 35 million off the payroll only gets them 10 million in cap space but they could get creative with that last year on Gortat and Morris' contracts to make more space. It also gets them away from the dreaded "repeat offender" tax.
Wall asked for an athletic big and Cauley-Stein is certainly that. That's why we're having this conversation. Not even the fans can agree on which one of Wall, Beal, or Porter would be traded though so don't be surprised if Grunfeld just sits on his hands or tries to fix their roster problems with veteran rentals. It's fun to think about snagging Porter and competing for a playoff spot next season but that would require a pretty stunning reversal of procedure for one of the NBA's longest tenured GMs.
I only take on Mahinmi for Beal. If Grunfeld thinks he can dump Mahinmi with a maxed out Porter, best of luck to him.
You went even farther than what I might of hoped for. And I thought I might have been a little out there. This is why im curious how the rest of leagues team feels about this. Id imagine its recognized Porter is a poor value as a max player.
Could we get him straight up for WCS? Does WCS have more value than that considering his cost? Could we possibly get Porter and their 15 for WCS? After a difficult season, let me live in dream land for awhile

Their cupboards are a little bare. I was wondering about WCS and JJ straight up for Porter and no draft picks either way. The Kings are one of the few teams that can straight up give some tax relief. To me it depends on how tax averse their owner is. The following season he has 100 million in salary with only five players currently committed.
Not sure if the Nets would actually give salary relief The Kings could cut their salary by almost 19 million. But this is all for naught if the Wizards owner is willing to pay the tax and be a first round exit in the East.Id guess that the Nets would be the biggest competitor in a salary cap relief deal for Porter ala Crabb. They would jave no problem paying out Mahimnis contract to add another young talent especilly cosidering how they have hamatrung themselves with draft. Not many other avenues for them to get yojng talent.
Somebody else can chime in here if I'm wrong but I believe salaries only need to match (to within 125%) if you're over the cap meaning Washington can't take back more than 125% of the salary that they're sending out. On the reverse side, if we're far enough under the cap we can absorb contracts into our cap space without penalty or restriction but that cap space does include cap holds for player or team options (until they're declined) and rookie scale contracts and a minimum for each roster spot up to 12 players.
So theoretically we can take in Otto Porter and Ian Mahimi provided we have at least 42 million in available cap space. The cap is expected to go up to 101 million for next season. We would need Shumpert to opt out and it's still very close at that point because we owe about $5 million combined to Papagiannis, Barnes, and Butler and that counts against the cap. The rookie scale for the #7 pick probably puts this trade out of range even if we send them Cauley-Stein and Justin Jackson. We have to throw in another contract like Frank Mason and/or Skal Labissiere. At that point it's a tougher sell for me. Maybe if they include the #15 pick too.
Can’t we trade them ZBo he’s at 11.5mill and I’m pretty sure his contract isn’t guaranteed
I just don't think Washington wants salary coming back. Justin Jackson is a low rent Otto Porter replacement for them and WCS could be the athletic big guy they're looking for but I'm not sure we could talk Grunfeld into seeing Zach Randolph on a one-year deal as positive value. Perhaps given their cap issues he's better than anyone else they can get with that cap space as a one year rental? Kosta or Garrett Temple might be more realistic throw-in pieces because they're a little cheaper.
I'm not sure you would have to include Skal. WCS and JJ for Porter in one transaction using cap space and. Randolph for Mahinmi in a seperated transaction (works on the trade machine at least). The deal for them would be getting a athletic center they could sell for upside while clearing 33million of cap space the next 2 years. They’d cut ZBo before he boarded a plane taking on Mahinmi contract is what would spear us to the head of the table on such a deal and is what we have cap space for.
After the trade Washington would have about 16million available in cap space to improve there team.
More importantly we turned WCS/Skal/JJ into a 16-6-2 SF with upside while keeping our draft pick.
How about Mahinmi + #15 for any veteran combo of their choice. I'm not trading WCS, Justin simply because we don't have to. We should add to our crop not dissect it.I don’t get why some wouldn’t be willing to take back Mahinmi contract for WCS-Skal-JJ. In this scenario we keep our pick and draft the best big that’s there. We could leave the draft with Porter/Bamba or Porter/Carter you can’t ask for a better off season.
Another reason to make an Otto/15 for WCS/7 trade is the proven factor.
Otto is a proven 16-6-2 guy with elite shooting and defense and he played better with Wall out. On the other hand getting Bridges at 7 how do we know he’s gonna be good. What if he ends up being a normal 3D guy while Porter has proven at the very least he’s a 3rd option on a playoff team
I wouldn’t do that deal, but I wouldn’t fault Vlade for doing it. My preference is Beal. They have to trade one of the three this summer. It won’t be Wall—he thinks he’s running things, is the face of the franchise, and his contract is immovable. Porter could be moved, but they’ll have to pay a premium to do it and Porter’s happy. He’s making max money in his hometown and properly slotted as the third wheel. Moving Porter does not deflate the long-term pressure building.
Beal, I think, is going to play out like the timeline of Kyrie last summer. He deserves his own team and will be open to a move. As the summer progresses, and especially if Wall makes more statements, the pressure will build for the Wiz to get something done. That’s when we can strike with our young bigs and cap space. Beal is already a great player, and a guy that other great players will want to play with come 2019 free agency.
What would a deal for Beal look like?
Buddy/7 I mean is beal that good to give up that much for a position we are good at
If Beal is our Harden/CWebb trade, they'll want more than Buddy/WCS. A trade doesn't get done unless we include #7 imo. I think that's the starting point for them. A deal would probably end up looking like 7 and Bogdanovic. It's a gamble though..No, Buddy/WCS plus maybe Koufos or Temple. Whatever expiring vet they want. If Beal gets moved it will be after the draft, so the #7 will be out of play. They’ll look to move Porter first. I just think they won’t find anything of great value with Porter, and I think Beal will let them know he wouldn’t mind his own team if the Wiz can find something that works.
And yeah, Beal is worth it. Beal is our Harden trade, or this era’s Webber trade, a budding superstar ready to be given the keys to his own team. Outside of landing Luka, Beal is the best way to really put us in the frame for 2019 free agents. I’m bullish on free agency anyway, but Beal would really help the cause.
