Official Draft Day Discussion - NO SPOILERS ALLOWED

Too bad about Hezonja. Orlando has a good track record with Oladipo, Payton and Hezonja. Call me skeptical about this pick. Picking a meh rebounding defensive specialist at #6?
I'm gonna call you skeptical right now, because he's not even a rebounding specialist. He is a rim protector.

Look, this is all I'm going to say about the pick and then I'll let the majority of you go one celebrating. The only picks I hated more than this one were Jimmer and Spencer Hawes. I hated those picks and people here jumped all over me to say how wrong I was. As it turned out, those were both terrible picks after all. I'm already on record about this but I'll say it again: Emmanuel Mudiay and Stanley Johnson are the two best players in the draft. We just passed on both of them. Cauley-Stein will be decent for us but a DPOY he is not. He's not going to single-handidly fix our defense, and in four years we're still going to be talking about how we can fix the PF position while Mudiay and Johnson are winning awards on other teams.

This is the one draft we couldn't afford to blow and we just blew it. Heaven help us.

I think you're right there. But it's a risk-reward thing. I think "at ceiling" Mudiay would be a bigger impact player than "at ceiling" WCS. It's just that the floor, and maybe the average, leans to WCS.
Absolutely. But we want players with big floors. While the home-run is always wanted, its not like WCS is someone who CAN'T be a star. And he fills our biggest need (imo) with his ability to defend the PnR, help defense and close out on shooters. We actually got an army of good man-defenders. We just got the goalie behind them now.

the espn analysts do suck tho. saying people comparing wcs to rodman and they dont see it. who is doing that comparison. all i saw was tyson chandler comparison due to defense. no one said wcs was gonna be a great rebounder. its his DEFENSE

WCS is a good pick if Cuz is here and Karl is fired.

If Karl remains, Cuz is gone and we blew a the pick on a role player and passed up star potential.

That's how I see it anyway.
Any player as physically gifted as WCS has star potential. If he was physically limited sure he's a role player... but he's one of the most physically gifted players to come into the league in a long time, that's the definition of a high ceiling. I actually love the pick because at worst he's a solid role player who fits like a glove next to Cuz, at best... I mean what's the ceiling for a guy who is as big as he is that moves as quickly and runs the floor the way he does with incredible leaping ability?

BSPN keeps saying he won't be a scorer. That's not why we effing drafted him for! Shut the **** up already! I think we are going to see what Cousins really can do without having the worry as much about defense as he had before.
and can help keep Cuz out of foul trouble a lot more often. sign me up

You realize WCS most of the time was out on the perimeter guarding small guys, right? He will play with Cuz, one of the best rebounders anyways. He doesn't need to get 15 rebounds per game. He will be a great defender, and that's exactly what I want and what we need.

the key to WCS is DMC.

The meh rebounding meh scoring defensive specialist absolutely makes sense if its playing alongside the mega scoring mega rebounding beast. Then it goes all Tom Cruise and completes us.

Trade DMC and all of a sudden WCS is an incredibly limited pick. But that's not the idea. This is a perfect roleplaying complement. And we need more of those, not less.

No, we're not, not if it helps Cousins.

I know its a shocking thing to draft defense, but it really is what will set us free.
Especially being able to not collapse on p&r plays. With the guards the way they are now, we can now do a lot more on defense. Provided he pans out. You get DMC some defensive help, he can spend more energy on offense, eg, pummeling people into submission.

In an NBA so focused on rim-protection and switching defense, having an elite rim-protecter that can switch on guards is more valuable than a volume scorer.

Just stay healthy.

Praise on WCS aside, the impact this has on making Cousins feel wanted has got to be felt as positive by him and his camp. This is the ideal complimentary front court player to DMC. Possibly better even than a Favors.

Talk is talk. Actions speak far louder. This action should silence any doubt that the Kings ever considered moving Cousins... whoever started those rumors... it really doesn't matter at all now. We've got our front court tandem for the next ten years. Possibly a legendary one.

I compel you to drop the hype and drama (who we could have had, traded for... blah blah blah) for a second and apprehend the true situation of our front court as it stands. You can't help but be extremely pleased.

I think this whole thing is moot if karl and DMC can't work things out. If cousins ends up leaving this pick is going to really hurt us. Karl is the huge wildcard.
