Nothing else? lol

If Detroit keeps Monroe (which it looks like they're leaning) Meeks will have plenty of space. Very underrated player on the rise, imo. Above average defender for a guard that can also guard PG's.

Happens every FA season. Guys get overpaid because that's what it takes to steal a player from another team (and all of the other teams). I don't think he's being grossly overpaid either, just above the MLE?

Methinks you are over-rating Meeks just a tad. Remember he played on a depleted team last year with a system known for inflating shooters stats. He doesn't rebound or pass well and at best has been an average defender in his career. Good 3 point shooter but its likely about 2M more than he's worth.

The market dictates what he is worth. You don't think there were other teams in the same range?

DET paid a little over MLE to keep those teams away. That's overpaying by only $1 million.

But we have no way of knowing this. For all we know the next best offer was $2M. When your cap become clogged with these kinds of deals (like our own) and you can't improve your roster it only matters what that player is payed now, not some hypothetical market 2 years prior. For irreplaceable talents, you bet you overpay. But not for the kind of guys where the step down to an alternative wouldn't be major.

Does this mean they aren't looking at IT anymore. Or do they want that pairing

Who knows, maybe. Detroit has long been dumb with its money, but I imagine this, and the Cartier Martin mini signing, are SVG trying to recreate his wall of shooters around the frontline up there. So if he's willing to grossly overpay for Meeks to get his new Reddick, its not impossible he would like a new Jameer Nelson too. And since they are wasting capspace, makes it more likely they have to cut a sign and trade deal to get it done.

And the other way to look at it is Meeks was going to be a MLE level contract guy this offseason, and DET barely went over that price.

NBA teams are going crazy over shooters right now.

Hmmm bidding war between Boston and Detroit?

5 year 60 mill, Gortat resigning with the Wizards...

That's a lot of money

He's a quality big man on both ends of the court. I think it's well worth it. Plus, he definitely showed his worth in the playoffs. I think a center his size can play for another 4 years. I wonder if they'll use him as an expiring the last year. We'll see.
Also, he was a hot commodity.

Gortat was the number one priority for Washington. That is too much however but he is very important to the team so I hope this doesn't forbid them signing other players than can help the team get over the hump. As for Livingston, he got a nice pay day for being roster filler only two or three seasons ago.

Why aren't the Kings making any offers. I have been reading hoopshype and Twitter and I have NOT seen a single mentioned of the Kings. Are we going to have the EXACT same team with the added of Nik for next season? If so, what a long season this will be.

Let the flames begin with my post.

Too early in the process for that. You always have the first rush of overpaid guys that teams target, and since we can't go above MLE we can't bea those anyway. Then things settle down and you can sift through the leftovers looking for bargains. of course that's what the Kings have always done with crappy results. but with our cap situation, not much choice here.

Not positive Detroit can offer that now

Meeks makes it tighter. It looks like if they renounce the cap hold on Stuckey (and everybody else other than Monroe) and waive the unguaranteed money of Siva and Harrellson they should be very close, especially since the contract can start a bit below and escalate. But I'm only doing the mental math and trying to keep it to the nearest half-million or so and the Meeks contract may escalate as well (also giving a bit of breathing room). Obviously if they let Monroe go there's no problem.

You have to believe teams have a better sense of what the market will dictate when making these kinds of offers. It wouldn't make sense to offer 3/19 if the next best offer was only $2/year because that is severe over pay even for a small market team.

If you are a small market team, you certainly will have to overpay for second and third tier talent unless you are the Spurs.

Could be another year where we might have to wait it out unless we can pull off some crazy trade imo.

Patty mills out 7 months

LOL things are looking slimmer for the Kings

It seems like we only have J-Smoove and Rondo left to negotiate with. Another year wasted, another year in the lottery. :)
