Mythical Complement Guard to Tyreke....

#1
So on here and many other sites I keep hearing about the 'PERFECT' long term guard to place next to Tyreke in the backcourt. This guard is 6'4-6'7" range, has deep ball range, can handle the rock to take away pressure from bringing the ball up for Tyreke. This player is also a ball stopper and one of the top defensive guards out there. However, this guard is NOT an all-star or even a star, rather a strong complementary piece(i.e. starter quality, nothing more nothing less). So if you take out the all-star guards or near all-star guards, who IS this mythical guard we Kings fans describe? WHo best fits this profile? Put an actual name to the description. Let's hear what you got to say on this. I'm not so much worried about contracts either. Age, may be a factor here since our team is so young and we're looking for a player to complement Tyreke long-term, but contract should not be a factor because we're hear zeroing in on the perfect TARGETS.

My targets include:

Aaron Afflalo
Courtney Lee
Ty Lawson
Aaron Brooks
DJ Augustin

All young players with decent range, some are better defenders than others and most have strong ball-handling skills with the right age to move forward with our roster.

Now what would it take to get one of these guys on our rosters?

James Harden would be sick. Can handle, shoot, pass and we would keep the mismatch with reke at point. Im only saying this because i picked up Harden in 2k11 and he dummies beside reke haha.

I don't know whats the obsession with Afflalo, but none the less, I like James Harden & Courtney Lee. Another player who would of been nice, even though he is a seasoned vet would be Raja Bell, toughness, defense & 3 point shot.

Just a little confused. You said the ideal player is in the 6'4" to 6'7" range, and then you list three midgets in Lawson, Brooks and Augustin. Although they might fit the rest of the requirements, I think part of the idea was to put some size next to Tyreke.

I'm fine with Afflalo, who you seem to be related to. Courtney Lee isn't bad either. Some others I would consider are:

Marco Belinelli: 6'5" and a good if not erratic shooter. He looked like a sure thing in summer league some time ago, but has never found his niche. He handles the ball well enough.

Wayne Ellington: 6'4" and a kid I really like. Good shooter, who really lit it up in summer league, while playing good defense. Ballhandling is just OK, and need Improving. But he's young and would fit age wise.

Wesley Mathews: 6'5" and someone we probably won't pry away from Portland. He was on my summer list of SG's I was interested in. He's a solid player with an NBA body.

Marcus Thornton: 6'4". A kid I really liked coming out of college. Good ballhandler and passer. Decent to good shooter.

Greivis Vasquez: 6'6". The player I had going to the Kings at 33. He's everything but a great athlete. He can play the point or the SG position. Has turned himself into a good shooter and a decent defender. Handles the ball extremely well and is a very good passer. He leaves it all out on the floor. My disappointment of his being taken in the first round was neturalzed by Whiteside dropping to us in the second round.

I love Marcus Thornton, a similar player that will perform like Marcus will be Jordan Crawford, look out for him as well. I wish we could of traded down to get him.

For the Kings I would prefer Thornton. I think he would fit beautifully. Crawford is more of a scorer. Handles the ball, OK but would rather shoot it than pass it. Crawford is a streak shooter. When he's on, watch out. But when he's off, find a way to get the ball out of his hands.

Antonio Anderson :)

OK seriously..

Eric Gordon
James Harden
Doug Christie in his prime would have been awesome
If Hedo was 4" shorter (lol when do you ever hear that) he woul dbe perfect
Jrue Holiday

I am leaving out a ton of people but basically I would like a good scoring SG who can handle the ball.

After watching Affalo this pre-season, I'm impressed. But fat chance that Denver let him go, especially if they anticipate losing Anthony.

The following players are most likely untouchable, however extremely intriguing...

The player I realy wanted a few years ago, before he jumped way up in the draft was Russell Westbrook. Can you imagine a Westbrook/Evans backcourt? Same could be said for Stephen Curry or John Wall. Wow!

An older player that could work well would be Jason Terry. He can handle, shoot, pass, and play passable defense for the 1 or 2 spot. Another intriguing scenario is an aging spurs team trying to rebuild and moving Tony Parker for some of the Kings young pieces. Tyreke + Parker would be dynamic.

In NBA 2k11, I traded Landry for Xavier Henry + 1st Rd pick. Xavie henry has been lighting it up for me, he's actually scoring more then Reke just shooting off drive and kicks.

Both end the ball, neither is a shooter in most of those cases.

And when we start talking about combo PGs who can shoot...well heck, we already have one.

Doug Christie
Raja Bell
Matt Harpring
Trevor Ariza
Mike Miller
Kyle Korver
Mickael Pietrus

I don't think anyone fits the mold of OP exactly (if they really did everything as well as OP says, that player would be all star, a Brandon Roy caliber player). Anyone like the above would be good enough.

I think the key to this team is going to be the frontcourt. Finding a decent shooter who can defend should be relatively easy to acquire.

I think Smills' discrepancy between tall and short guards might be touching on something true: I see TWO ideal guards to pair in the backcourt with Tyreke: first, of course, is the shooting/ballhandling/defending uber-Christie that's still tall enough to force other teams to put their PGs on Tyreke. That's the one we talk about the most. But there's also, I think, the need for the speedy change of pace guard off the bench, who can keep up with the increasingly fast point guards out there on defense when need be. I think that's where Jeter is fitting in this year.

For the first category, I think many of the names here are spot on: Ideally, there's Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday, then maybe Harden, but each would be hard to get (for a while I was hoping maybe we could swap Landry for Harden but that's looking increasingly unrealistic). More realistic options might include Vasquez (a 6-6 Beno), the legendary Afflalo, and Thorton (who I think is a free agent this next summer?). My dark horse, if the Spurs struggle and decide to call it a dynasty and rebuild, is Manu...

As for the second role, I think guys like Brooks, etc, would be ideal. But Brooks isn't coming cheap next summer, and I'm not sure if you'd want to break the bank for what should be your 3rd guard.

In sum, if you could cash in some of the vets, future picks, and cap space, and leave me with a 8-man future rotation of Evans, Gordon, and Brooks in the backcourt, Casspi and Greene at the SF, and big men in Cousins, Thompson, and Whiteside, I'd be a happy camper!

Why is this an issue!

Landry will be gone in 2011, and likely our 2011 pick will be 8-15, a good spot to find the solid player we are looking for. So in no combination Landry + a mid 1st round pick wouldn't = Afflalo, or any other qualifying player? Who is Afflalo? Other than the love that goes to him here I have nothing on him :p

Well, Thornton is a streak shooter himself. He has his on and off games. One is a rookie and the other is a 2nd year player, I really wouldn't be able to choose out of the two because I just love what they could bring for this team.

OJ Mayo is a name I didn't mention, that I saw through this thread that I think would be near perfect fit next to Tyreke. We'd have to give up a pretty penny to acquire him, but good target.

Names like Eric Gordon and James Harden I expected and are also good ideas as well.

This thread is accomplishing what I wanted it to. THanks.
