Monarchs vs Mystics - Game Discussion

Sacramento and Wahington went into double OT tied at 86.

Ticha has scored all 9 Monarchs points in 2OT so far. SAC now up 95-91 with 1:32 to play.

And no, the ladies' good luck charm is not at Arco tonight.

Whew! What an exhausting game...not only for our players, but for the fans, as well.

I wish I had kept track of how many of the Mystics players that Ticha got to foul out. I know that one of them was Beard, and I think the final Teasley foul was for fouling Ticha too. Coach Whiz finally listened to what we were yelling. Take it to the hole Ticha. Make them foul you to stop your lay-up. Ticha was really phenominal in OT.

Washington had a better FT%, better shooting %, fewer TO's, and we still beat them. The ladies just followed Yo's lead (keep fighting hard), and got the victory. I'll take em anyway I can get them. :D

Was that a playoff game? No just regular season...wow!
I know what you mean 6th...I feel as if I played the game...What a tough emotional game. These are the ones where the Monarchs find a way to win.
Ticha was solid, only if she can get mad a little more often! In her interview, she said, I guess I should try & shoot the ball more? After 9 years & coaches, teammates & family encouraging her to shoot more....o.k after last nights game , she finally realized great things can happen when you drive to the basket. So fun to watch when trys to be aggressive & slahes to the hoop. What a great time to have Ticha & Yo begin to hit their stride. Like another poster mentioned...they are our veterans, our leaders...where they take the Monarchs will be our destiny.
What a ride it will be.

Yo Griffith is hardcore; I was worried that she might have to sit the rest of the game out after taking that hit, and then she goes right back out and wins the jump ball. Hopefully, she's still got enough left in the tank for the playoffs.

I'm with ya, Slim. I was so afraid that she had re-injured that disc in her neck (of a few years ago). Not only is Yo my favorite all time player, but I cannot imagine anyone ever bumping her from that position. She is a WARRIOR!!

The trainer was working on Yo all of the time she was on the bench. If they hadn't let that lead get away I suspected we might not have seen her much in the 2nd half. That was classic warrior Yo.

Man, that DID feel like a playoff game...geewhiz. I would have liked to have seen Kara get more touches than she did in the 2nd half. I'm glad somebody took control of the overtime, probably even more glad and surprised that it was Ticha. We were joking that Ticha must be ready to go home the way she authoritatively took over the 2nd overtime. Allz I ask is that she read the defense a couple of times or so a game and just walk through to the basket and make teams pay for sagging off her like the Mystics were. The shots she was dropping were pretty.

The Alana Beard show was pretty awesome...almost got to be too awesome for my taste, but she was awesome nonetheless. Glad we figured out that we probably should not dribble into her territory without knowing what we wanted to do with the ball, because it appeared that the ball looked like fresh meat to her. Didn't fully appreciate her hops, but she elevated quite nicely to emphatically block Ticha's shot and send the ball into Monty's face.

Man, that was a fun/frustrating game to be at! The officiating was insane! But consistent I guess. They missed calls at both ends. The most obvious one came in regulation though, when the Mystics were still down 4. I don't know if you guys could see it though since most of you sit at the other end of the court. But the only reason Alana Beard got that shot off to pull them within two points, was because she sent a hard, two-handed shove into Ticha that sent her to the deck. Our whole section was screaming because it was so blatant.

Our leaders really stepped up to the plate last night. Yo gave us all a nice little heart attack for a moment, but I wasn't at all surprised to see her run back to the huddle and go back in and win the tip. That's typical Yo for you. And I loved her at the end of the game keeping everyone in line. Ticha, for once, seemed to be losing some of her cool demeanor... and Coach was this close to getting himself T'd up. But there was Yo, yanking Ticha by the arm and then going back to pull Whiz back to the huddle as well.

I think Ticha needs to get pissed off more often. That double OT performace was beautiful.

Yo had her hands full with Whiz, coach was rounding himself into playoff form too. He chewed up two refs pretty good for much of the game, I don't think he laid into Michael Price as much as he laid into the other two. Especially the guy who overturned an out of bounds possession towards the end I think of the first overtime.

Part of 6th's post:
...I wish I had kept track of how many of the Mystics players that Ticha got to foul out. I know that one of them was Beard, and I think the final Teasley foul was for fouling Ticha too...

According to today's SacBee, four Mystics players received six fouls to foul themselves out of the game.

This is what it said:
The Mystics were slowly crippled as four starters, including foward Alana Beard (23 points) fouled out. That was a WNBA first, and Washington's 38 personal fouls are the second most for a team in league history...

The box score indicates that, in addition to Beard, Chasity Melvin, Nikki Teasley, and one of the Miller twins also received six fouls. Delisha Milton-Jones got five fouls, and Nakia Sanford got four.

BTW, has the Monarchs been involved in a double-overtime game before?

Ticha driving at them I think did play a role in Beard fouling out. I think you're right 6th that Teasley was one of them too. She I think definitely had two really stupid fouls right in front of the referees leading up to #6, but I think Teasley and Melvin fouled out when they were forced to foul to stop the clock. Miller had fouled out at some point in regulation. Which really didn't surprise me since neither Coco nor her sister Kelly can defend anybody without fouling them...A LOT.

I do believe the Monarchs have played at least one double OT game, and I want to say one involved these very same Mystics (not THESE Mystics, but the franchise). I was out of town so I didn't see it in person, but I believe it was one of the nights that Chamique went FREAK and she ultimately took over in the 2nd OT. I remember getting back to my hotel room and logging into Audio Season Pass and being surprised that the game was still on

That was some game. I'm so glad I was there. It was won on sheer heart and determination, because I didn't feel like the Monarchs played all that well in the second half. Honestly, my hats off to the Mystics for the game they played to get back into it and force two overtimes in our house. Despite a deep bench, the Monarchs didn't look fresher in this game.

Thank goodness, Ticha picked a great time to go aggressive to the basket. And what can one say about Yo. The woman is absolutely a warrior queen. I'm not sure I can name another athelete that could top Yo in pure grit. Amazing.

That was the best game all season!!!!

Man, the Mystics not only have talent, but they have heart.

Did anybody notice that when the buzzer sounded at the end of the first overtime, that there was a mass exodus out of Arco Arena!!! "I was like, WHERE IN THE HELL IS EVERYBODY GOING. . It is Saturday night, it is only 9:45pm, tommorrow is Sunday, I know that I had to be in church at 10:00am sharp, and if I could stay, so could everybody else". I found that very odd for Arco.

Anyway, I thought Ticha was absolutely sensational. I know that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that her late game performance was due to all those Mystic players in foul trouble. But to see her just absolutely take control of the game in the second overtime brought tears to my eyes.:o

I remember thinking that too, re: the people streaming out of ARCO after it pushed to a 2nd OT. Funny thing was that if they had hung around for the 2nd OT and the post game interview they would have missed much of the stop and go traffic jam on I-5. (thanks btw 6th for the voicemail)

Yes, I got caught up in that traffic too!! But it was worth it.
