Free-agent center Darko Milicic agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the player's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford.

Cornstein refused to disclose the amount of the deal, but the starting salary is believed to be for substantially more than the $5.3 million mid-level exception.
"We are extremely excited for this new opportunity," Cornstein said. "Darko's going to a team that really wants him. He's going to a young team with an exciting bright future much like his own. We're very excited Darko gets to learn from coach Marc Iavaroni. We believe he's one of the best big men coaches in the game. And we couldn't be happier that he has found a new home where he's appreciated."
Milicic was recently waived by the Orlando Magic to clear the cap room necessary to sign Rashard Lewis.
"Memphis has really pursued Darko since the moment he became an unrestricted free agent last week," Cornstein said. "And I'm grateful for the opportunity they'll be providing for Darko at this stage of his career."
Milicic was the second pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He was taken ahead of All-Stars like Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade and was widely regarded as a draft bust heading into his third season.
Milicic was traded to the Magic in February of 2006 and began to turn around his career. He averaged eight points and 5.5 rebounds in 23 minutes per game for the Magic last season. But he upped his averaged 12.3 points per game in the playoffs this year.
Magic general manager Otis Smith said that the team's top priority in the offseason was signing Milicic, but he reversed course after it became clear that signing Lewis would take all of their cap room.
Milicic should address the Grizzlies' biggest offseason need -- adding a center to play with Pau Gasol. His game appears to complement Iavaroni's up-tempo system.

The Otis Thorpe trade has finally come full circle, and the fates are at rest while destiny sleeps, and order has been returned to the universe.

It was meant to be.

That's some symmetry for you... All we need now is for Memphis to sign Steve Francis, and New Orleans to trade for Kobe Bryant.

The griz seem to know what they're doing.

C Milicic
PF Gasol
SF Gay
SG Miller/Kinsey
PG Conley/Lowry

That is a very promising young team. Not too bad for dropping 3 spots in the lottery.

I find it amusing that after all the fuss, Jerry West finally gets his man... a man that never should have been traded for Otis Thorpe.

This is a very good move by the Grizz, and all of a sudden they have a complete young lineup to throw out there with 2 multi-skilled 7 footers on the front line. Won't make the playoffs this year, but they will be HAPPY not to -- one more lottery pick next year, and with the young guys all growing up, maybe a real future.

Have an entire 8 man rotation of young guys:

C- Darko
PF- Pau, Warrick
SF- Miller
OG- Gay, Kinsey
PG- Conley, Lowry

And not a player in the bunch over 27. Add in another lottery pick next year and...

Meanwhile we...well, we wallow.

Such a horrible trade, why the hell was it only top 1 protected? How stupid.

It wasn't. First it was lotto protected (1998) than it got progressively less protected, as is the logic with over time your team getting progressively better, so the draft pick will go down in value. They had no idea they would still be that bad 5 years later.

Yep. They are going to kick the Kings a$$ next year.

It's funny how for the last 2 years people have been saying that Jerry West doesn't know what he's doing anymore, how he dismantled the Grizzlies and made them into the worst team in the NBA. Now, they're one big trade away from being a contender, they have a young core, and they're still under the cap and will benefit from other team's luxury tax payments.

They're not a top team in the League, but they're sitting a lot better than they were three years ago when Logo started stripping them down.
