Melvin Ely to sign with kings (Non-Guaranteed)

Sounds like Melvin Ely will be signing his non-guaranteed deal today. I don't see him and Mason making the team, so should be interesting.

Non guaranteed obviously, which is good news. This makes the Mason signing make a little more sense to me. Maybe teams were after Mason and the kings wanted to lock him up just to see what he had during the preseason. The most interesting part of this tweet is that it looks like Ely and Mason are going to be the ones battling for a spot, and while Im not a huge fan of Ely, I have to believe he has the edge on Mason just because of his size. Its been said and i'll say it again, we dont need another SF on this team. Heres to hoping Ely makes the team.

damn, I like both players. Is there not room for both of them on the squad?
I thought we signed mason to a guaranteed deal?

why dont they just send casspi, brockman and greene to the nbdl for the season? or at least part of it....

cuz those players need to gain chemistry with our core, whether it be in practice or game situations. I cant see Greene and Casspi both getting PT so its possible that one will be sent down.

we were the worst team in the nba last season and will most likely be one of the worst this season. how much would it hurt this team if greene, casspi and brockman didnt play in the nba for the bulk of the season? with all of the vets we have they might not get any minutes unless someone gets injured. we can bring them back at anytime to play if we need them to help us lose a close game....

but i like that we finally have a back up center....

Ok, honestly, Melvin Ely is not a good basketball player by any means - plainly, he stinks. Remember Mo Taylor?

But here's the thing, we need someone with size and strength to allow Hawes/Thompson/May to get some rest. Last time I checked 2 out of 3 have a history of injuries, and playing Hawes more than 38 minutes per night would not be ideal. We're not going to the playoffs anyways, but it'd sure stink to have our "future" ruined by a knee injury b/c of exhaustion...

So, welcome Melvin...

we are not going anywhere. the kids are OUR FUTURE & need real time experience w/ some real competition. are we taking a few more steps back to win a few more meaningless games ala theuss, musselman style? aren't we aiming for the future? develop the guys who will be with us for the long haul and we won't need to keep putting band aids on our wounds.

Having watched Melvin with the hornets the past few years, I can shed some light on the kind of player he is. He's undersized for a C, and is better suited at PF. He isn't a bad defender, but rather a mediocre one which means against the right guy, he can look foolish at times. He doesn't block that many shots either. He is a tough guy though, and he does have a hook shot. But really, a backup PF/C shouldn't be hoping for touches. I guess the Kings hope he can fill in the C position for a few minutes and give some hard fouls, because that's really the only thing he's good for. He's not a good player, does not have potential to get better, and with May on this team, I really don't see why the Kings even want to add him...

They still get paid, count towards the cap and take a roster spot.

i knew that it counted towards the cap but i didnt know that it still counted as a roster spot. i thought that they added it to get rid of the injured reserve list. oh well never mind then....

Watched and supported Melvin for 5 years with my hometown Bulldogs, but if it's between he and Mason, I'd probably go for Mason and just play small. Of course I'd rather Brockman and Greene get the minutes, but oh well.

I hope the Kings sign every free agent in the league to a non-guarenteed contract... However, like May and likely Mason, Ely should be playing to save his career from ending. A good showing with Sac could lead to a better deal next season.

Exactly why I want Ely, he wont steal minutes and is more of end of bench guy than a real minute theif like Mason could be.

I would take Ely over Mason

I always liked his talent and his size. Hopefully he won't under achieve... again.
We have enough wing players. The coin toss goes to Ely.

Here is my hope above all hopes...

They KEEP Ely AND Mason and leave K9 on the Injured Reserve for the entire season... maybe instead of getting a big name FA, they get two cheap ones to keep K9 sitting at home.

I like the signing. He gives us better size in the front court that we desperately need. I dont have a problem bringing him off the bench as a 4 or a 5. He has the body to play both positions. Not have a guy above 6'7 to bring off the bench is a major problem and im glad that need was addressed. Ely seems like a workhorse type of player.

Id be willing to bet that Mason makes the team over Greene.

I look at Ely as nothing more than a, emergency everybody is in foul trouble player. And, I won't be shocked if he doesn't make the team. There is no upside left for him. If he does make the team, he better buy a nice comfortable cushion for his chair, because I doubt he'll be getting out of it very often.

Meh.. K( will be trade bait anyway come deadline when teams want capspace.

Hopefully Petrie sees that and does something.
