Lottery position thread

The Bobcats continue to play like the world is on fire and beat the Heat today in overtime with another huge game from Wallace, and late dagger threes by the awesome Walter Herrmann. That's 31 wins for them, and if Philly can get a win against the Hawks, were not as far back as we would have been. Still in the hun for #5.

Tied for 7th/8th/9th.

#1 Memphis 19-59
#2 Boston 23-53
#3 Milwaukee 26-50
#4 Atlanta 28-49

#6 Seattle 31-46
#7/8/9 Sacramento/Portland/Philly 31-45
#10/11 Minnesota/NY 32-44

Technically, its a 5-way tie. The ones that will drop down are the ones that end up with more wins than the others. I assume tie-breakers are similar to tie-breakers for play-off seeding?

Ties for lottery are resolved by adding up the pingpong balls for both lottery positions, and dividing them equally between the tied teams. I believe that ties for draft pick are resolved by what amounts to a coin flip.

Sweet! We could VERY easily TIE for the 5th pick without winning another game. However, one of Portland/Seattle will drop down b/c one will HAVE to win. The key is tuesday, PLEASE LOSE GUYS.

We have to hope those #6/#7/#8 spots remain unsettled right to the end of the season, because the fact is we unfortunately have 5 of our final 6 as winnable games, and the final 4 all against those .500 type teams that could/should be fighting for playoffs spots: Clips, Warriors, Hornets, Lakers. If they still have something to play for, hopefully they come in fired up and whatnot, but if things sort themselves out by the end, I fear we could get some bad wosses just by having the other side caring even less than we do.

We also have Ronnie Price and Justin Williams who appear to be playing for their next contract as well.

Those wins over Phoenix and Utah down the stretch are killing us right now.

We'd have the 5 slot all to ourselves and within striking distance of 4.

Or, more realistically, be able to wose the game to Memphis and still be in 5th place.

Rudy Gay: strained ankle
Mike Miller and Damon Stoudamire: sore knees

So we'll be facing Pau Gasol, Chucky Atkins, Hakim Warrick, Stromile Swift + several guys even hardcore NBA fans have barely heard of.

I hope that Potapenko is ready to play 40 minutes.

My occasional compilation, made by averaging out several current mock drafts, so that we can get some sort of idea who will be available and who will be out. We can probably forget about the top 5:

1. Oden
2. Durant
3. B. Wright
4. Horford
5. Hibbert
6./7. Brewer/Noah
8. J. Wright
9. Jianlian
10./11. Conley/Hawes
12./13. Green/Nicolas Batum
14. Thornton
15. Law
16. Splitter

Kings Lottery Position Watch

With the loss to Houston, the Kings "move up" in the ping-pong standings to a tie for 7th with Blazers and Sixers. The Kings are still statistically possible for the 3rd worst recrd, but mostly likely they are no worst than the Bobcats at #5. Here's hoping they keep "losing" and therefore "winning" in the lottery realm.

(Team / W / L / Pct )
1. Memphis 19 59 0.244
2. Boston 23 53 0.303
3. Milwaukee 26 50 0.342
4. Atlanta 28 49 0.364
5. Charlotte 31 47 0.397
6. Seattle 31 46 0.403
7. Sacramento 31 45 0.408
7. Portland 31 45 0.408
7. Philadelphia 31 45 0.408
10. Minnesota 32 44 0.421
11. New York 32 44 0.421
12. Indiana 34 42 0.447
13. Orlando 35 41 0.461
14. New Orl/OKC 36 41 0.468
15. New Jersey 36 40 0.474
16.Golden State 37 40 0.481

With Julian Wright joining theres a better chance to land a big guy, because I can't see Portland or Milwaukee taking a big in this draft. Wouldn't it be great if Horford, Hibbert or B.Wright fell to us.

It would be great, yeah, although all of the mock drafts I was looking at when I posted my list above already took into account that J. Wright was entering the draft this year, and all of them had the guys you mentioned going #3-#5, and J. Wright going at #8. So unless that changes between now and draft day, it seems more likely that Wright's entering the draft will just give us a shot at Wright. Still, we can always hope...

If we're not in the top 5 then bwright or horford won't fall to us

Ping-pong update

With sonics and blazers both losing, the Kings have "fallen" to a #8 tie with the sixers. Overtaking the Sonics and Bobcats into the #5 spot will not be easy. Also, the Knicks and the T-Wolves are right at our tail with losses yesterday.

1 Memphis 19 59 0.244
2 Boston 23 53 0.303
3 Milwaukee 26 51 0.338
4 Atlanta 28 49 0.364

Based on what I've seen, we will probably play the last game against the Lakers like our lives depend on it, with Artest playing 42 minutes (like the last game), even though everybody knows that he will be traded. Of course, the Lakers won't have anything to play for; they'll play all their subs after the first 7 minutes. Kings win, and lose a good chance at a high lottery pick.

NY is playing Chicago tonight, and can be expected to lose. Philly is also playing Indiana. Assuming we can't lin against Memphis, the only thing between us and 10th/11th place would be for Philly to wose an upset over the Pacers.

GO '6ers!

You guys realize that Atlanta's #4 pick belongs to the Suns, who don't need it! Imagine the Suns with Stoudamire and Horford.

Suns might go another way with that pick -- they are the ultimate run n gunners, so they might gamble on a guy like Jianlin or even move down a few spots and nab Noah and whatever else they can get. Not that they will definitely pass on Horford, just that its a team built with a single identity and single purpose, and you can see how fish out of water a guy like Kurt Thomas looks for them. Need to be able to really run and flow to fit the system.

They'll definitely want a PF so they can afford to lose marion if they have to. I think they'll pick Horford, they could use a potentially lock down post defender and very good rebounder. He's a pretty good passer and has improving mid range J, so he be a bad fit offensively either.

Why would they want to lose Marion? He's the key to the entire system. Marion (Nash aside) is what makes it work by being a nearly unique SF able to play PF and hang on the glass and reboundingwise. The perfect smallball weapon. They've got a money issue, but unless they just end up dumping him on Charlotte, they have to taake contracts back anyway.

Horford is actually pretty much a center for them, unless they entirely change gears and go conventional.

ahhhhhhhhh what are they doing... im stressing out so much right now looking at the box score live.

wow... i could def imagine yi on the suns team, and that scares the living daylights out of me.

nash
bell
diaw
marion
stoudamare
barbosa
yi

unbelievable what colangelo did for that franchise... they are competing for a championship, and yet still get to be a major player come draft night.
