Dave has weighed in and shared.
To me, two things jump off the page from this short story from a guy with a ton of access to the right people and trying to spit truth when he speaks publicly.
I. Head man is still TBA.
The front office hierarchy appears to be:
“Unnamed and still to come President of Basketball Operations
Vlade Divac
Pete D’Alessandro
Mike Bratz
Dean Oliver”
Karl’s input is also clearly included. Maybe they are just going to give him both jobs and put his name at the top. Maybe he’s “That One Guy in the Backgroud” and that’s not a reference to Vivek.” But he’s in there.
Regardless, I’m just floored that for the five jobs listed above Vivek is going to: (1) hire the 4 subordinate positions for the position of President of Basketball Operations;
and then later (2) get a qualified and competent candidate to sign on the dotted line with the conditions of: (a) word has it, this is a bottom 5-10 owner in the league because he’s trying to rush the process and prides himself on being a meddling irritant; (b) you have to deal with DMC’s impending walk year and/or potential push to leave town in the next 3-24 months; and (c) we’ve already hired your key staff for you. Wow, just wow wow wow. That does not happen anywhere else. This is so strange. Who is taking that job?
II. Looming Karl and DMC power struggle
Dave admits that DMC is unhappy and then throws out,
“George Karl will need to decide if he wants to work things out with his star big man, or move on down the road.”
No, no, no, no. I think the fair implication here is that Dave means if Karl and DMC can’t work things out, Karl will push the Kings to expedite DMC’s departure by making a trade to get max value now while his value is high. That cannot be an option.
I’m not blaming Dave for saying this. I think his story accurately reflects where our team is at based upon their behavior and comments and the chatter over the past two weeks. But this is flat out insane at this point.
If during the next 18 months Karl decides he can’t work things out with DMC, it is Karl – not DMC – that goes. That should not be debatable. For the next 18 months, we keep trying to put pieces around DMC to make him want to stay (under the condition that it also has to make some sense long term, because he’s probably a better bet to go than stay at this point and I’d like to see the Kings make the playoffs before 2020.)
