Looking at the new roster

Jkbiker

Starter
So New roster:

Miller,Hawes
Mikki,Sheldon
Artest,Garcia
Kevin,Salmons
Beno,Lue

11th and 12th Bench Warmers
AJ, Douby

Inactive SAR, KT,Wright

Quite a contest between AJ, Douby, Lue for backup Point?

Douby has had flashes but not good PG
AJ actually was steady starter 6.4 Pts in 26 ave Min'
Lue fairly productive as reserve, good 3 pt shooter 15/20 last 12 games
6.8 pts on 17 min ave as reserve.

Who do you all think will win the Backup point job?
Maybe Douby play some behind Kevin until Garcia
is healthy?

Maybe you should try this thread again after the deadline. Another trade like today's could change a third of the roster.

C: Miller/Hawes...That one's easy.

PF: Mikki/Sheldon...I think Sheldon takes over at some point sending the energy of Mikki to the bench as a spark-guy...Mikki will also play some backup C at this point.

SF: Artest/Salmons/Garcia...With Garcia getting limited PT.

SG: Martin/Garcia/Douby...With Douby getting practically zero PT.

PG: Beno/Lue/Johnson...Lue joins Mikki and Garcia as a pretty active energetic backup squad.

There's no limit on threads, though, so why not toss this around and create a new one IF there are more trades? Either that, or as PurpleHaze has mentioned, we can go back to discussing Dancer-Gate.

:p

I am thinking Douby will get the nod over the newcomers because they are gone in 3 months and Douby is part of the future as a spark bench player.

Very true, with potential Artest trade, could be very different very soon
actually was a comment in Justin and Dantey thread since trade and these two getting cut is the current roster change. VF21 felt it should be separate thread. Who am i the doubt VF's infinite wisdom?

:)

I think it will depend on their energy, hustle and defensive attitude. Reggie has been making it pretty clear how he's going to assign the minutes and "part of the future as a spark bench player" isn't necessarily part of the equation unless the other parts are there as well.

I think that Shelden will be moved into the starting lineup after a few games because Geoff needs to get a goooooooooood look at this young man before draft day. Might be the difference between drafting Collison/Mayo/Augistin, and Love/Thompson/Arthur.

I don't like giving up bibby, but I like the players. Lue is a good hustle guy. And I know 1 if not both of our current front court starters will be headed straight to the bench. Bibby was never the problem with this team. I am a fan of wherever he ends up.

Having looked over a few Hawks fan boards (maybe all existing Hawks fan boards, that might well be), I have seen several posters opine that AJ was the only Hawk in the trade that didn't fall into the category of "garbage" or "deadweight." So, if Hawks fans are to be believed, AJ would seem likely to get the nod, and starting him would not be out of the question.

So here's the deal. Quincy plays with energy and hustle. A. Johnson plays with energy and hustle. No diff. A. Johnson is more experienced, and arguable a better player today than Douby. Douby is younger, more athletic, with more upside. Who you gonna play, Reggie? Are you going to play Johnson who'se very likely not going to be with the team next year and might give you 1-3 more wins this year, or are you going young? Now that Petrie has shown his cards, he should have a little talk with Reggie to make sure that he and Reggie are on the same page...

Okay, here's another question. Why do you tend to assume Reggie and Petrie DON'T talk?

From the latest Bee chat with Geoff, it sounds like he's keeping an open mind WRT to re-signing one of the old Hawks PGs for next year, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Reggie has consistently shown, as most coaches do, an overreliance on the crutch of veteran players. It would not shock me at all to see Johnson and Lue not only taking Douby's minutes, but potentially stealing some of Beno's as well. Would nto even shock me to see Wright start taking some backup minutes up front -- used to be a solid player. Hopefully once the playoff thing officially becomes a pipedream (I think we have to go 27-4 now to reach 50 wins) he gets a litle nudge form the front office and switches into developmental mode.

I interpreted it a little differently...it's vintage Petrie. He isn't going to say anything negative about the new guys before they even pick out their uniform numbers. Of course he'll be noncommittal.

Maybe. He did throw Wright under the train, because we need both bigs and PGs, but he only mentioned the need for PGs. So, by omission, he seems to be saying that Wright kinda sucks, a statement that should not surprise anyone. But that's a contrast he didn't have to make, so I tend to believe that he's really thinking about it.

Although, with Petrie, you never know.

Does this mean the Kings are going to draft a PG? Hopefully Mayo drops that far. I can't imagine keeping AJ or Lue...or Douby running the team outside of Beno.

If you're going to draft a PG, this is the year. While the top tier of Rose, Bayless, and likely Mayo will be gone by the time the Kings pick, Darren Collison and D.J. Augustin should both be available. Either would be a solid pick.

We're staring the #12 pick in the face, so I think Collison or Lawson are more like where we'd be. But there are a number of PFs that should be available at 12, too, so I'm not sure what he'd want to do. The trade did nothing to help us in terms of developing talent for those positions, if anything, it was a setback; we still need solutions for both. Hopefully he'll pick the best of who is available, and not some silly shooter.

Okay, here's another question. Why do you tend to assume Reggie and Petrie DON'T talk?

I don't assume anything on what Petrie will do. In the past Petrie said that his policy was that he would not "interfere" with coaching decisions. That's the party line. Have you ever heard differently, whether regarding Adelman, Musselman, or Theus? I think there have been many interviews on that subject and that's Petrie's policy. And I'll make another assumption - in order for Reggie to play the youngin over the vet, he's going to have to be told, directly or indirectly, to play the youngin over the vet. Why? Because Theus wants to look good as a coach, and his thing as a coach is winning now, now playing to win next year. Also, Theus knows what happened to the last coach who had a terrible second half of the year. He's not going to be playing Douby and Hawes 30 minutes a game until he gets the nod to do so, if only for job security. Lastly, what I think Petrie should do is make it clear to Theus that this is a transition period, a time to play the younger players, not to get the extra couple of wins with the older players. We're going to see very soon what the new "policy" is very soon.

Mayo is overated. Way overated. As one Pac 10 announcer said: "He needs to stay in school one more year."
