Kings Summer League Info/Questions/Discussion (merged)

Unfortunately I must confess that between trying to watch Hawes closely, and Justin, and Cisco, and Yi, that I still didn't get a great feel for Shakur.

I watched Shakur's game closely, and I liked what I sae in his ball handling and decision making when passing the ball. He did'nt take many shots so I don't know about that aspect of his game. He Defense was good, interrupting the passing lanes all night.

Kings Vs Washington Summer League

with so many threads being used to talk about summer league lets direct the talks about what to expect next game and what we saw vs. China to one thread.

I was super impressed with Hawes it was awesome to see him get a solid start out of the gate. he didnt look un athletic at all, in fact i would say he looked like the most natural player on the floor. his 7 boards are well over KD's 1 and Odens 2. it looks like Hawes could be the most NBA ready after game one. Yes we played against China and Yes they are the weakest team in the summer league, but..... KD's 1 and Odens 2 reb's are terrible for their talent and size no matter who they play. Maybe it was nerves for those 2 but i was impressed with Hawes composure, i think the only time he hesitated was when he shot the 3ball. It looked like he questioned it being a good idea, and he didnt follow thru on it. other than that, all around nice game. his drive to the basket that resulted in a offensive foul looked good even though he was called for a foul.

Williams did look bigger and played strong. looks like hes coming back since he ended up playing.

I wasnt to excited with Garcia's shot selection although he ended with a great all around game i thought he should pass more when hes doubled. it seemed like alot of his shots were well defended, and he was forcing it. It was painful to watch in the beginning of the game.

I am really looking forward to playing a better team in Washington and should be more interesting to see how Williams and co. fair against better stronger players. But China was a great first team to play to warm up.

I'm merging this into the ongoing Summer League thread which already contains a lot of the stuff you're talking about. There's really no need for another one.

And by JT..you mean Justin Timberlake? ;)

I saw the first quarter. Hawes got some nice buckets and played solid defensively (against Wang I believe). Garcia forced up a few shots. Shakur had a couple of nice passes (although he must have played worse from that point on).
Typo there...I must have been tired...obviously meant JW, NOT JT...cant stand that Timberlake guy anyways.:D Anyways, I'm anxious to see how Hawes will look against some semi-NBA players in upcoming summer league games. I know the Chinese have a decent squad, but would probably get ran by most of the D-League/summer league teams, Yi or No Yi.. Should be interesting.

Shakur looked quicker than I expected, and he definitely bothered the Chinese on defense, but the same problems with him are still there -- can't shoot a lick, and while he made some nice passes he also turned it over quite a bit. Can't imagine him turning into something other than a third-string point guard, although I suppose he has the tools to be an Earl Watson-type defensive specialist. It wasn't really his strength in college and wasn't his mindset, but he's not going to make a living with his offense.

At this point, the turnovers don't bother me that much. You've basically got a bunch of guys out there who really don't know each other trying to play the game. I'm hoping that Shakur is more defensively minded and court aware. We don't absolutely need him to be an offensive specialist right from the beginning.

^I agree, but it's also sort of a consequence of his style of play, so it's not like this game was an aberration. He was sort of a one good pass/one bad pass type of player in college (he averaged a whopping 3.7 turnovers as a senior), and although one summer league game is not much of a sample, it looked pretty much like more of the same.

He's got fantastic size and athleticism, it's just his shooting and decisionmaking that plague him, and that's not going to change overnight.

Ah, but you can teach decision-making. And I think Tony Parker is proof that shooting/scoring can be improved over time.

I'd like to watch him play but I refuse to pay extra to DishNet for NBA-TV for two games.

Exactly. I remember that when Parker came into the league, he couldn't hit anything. Now he has a pretty nice jumpshot from just inside the 3 point line.

Just watched the game and yah.. The team played pretty well. JWill amazed me with his hustle.. This guy can probally start for a few teams in the league at PF.. Kings being one of them :) Hawes has a sweet friggin shot. Damn sweet shot. His step back reminds me of Dirk. Garcia played pretty well. His shot wasn't on, but as a shooter you have to keep shooting the ball. He should start at SF for the Kings if Artest is gone.

No, as a potential starter he has to learn to pass the ball and create shots for others when his shot isn't falling. I am so tired of the "shooters have to keep shooting regardless" philosophy. Cisco still has a lot of growing to do as far as court sense is concerned.

I didn't watch the whole game, but Garcia created quite a bit of easy buckets with his dribble penetration. Hawes/Williams were some nice recipients to Garcia's dishes...that's what i saw, mostly 1st and 2nd quarter though.

Ah, that's what I was hoping to hear. I didn't get to see any of the game so I'm going off what the people here say and trying to ask the right questions.

Thanks.

:)

If ur a shooter u have to keep shooting if ur shot if off to get ur shot back. Wasn't it Mike Bibby who said you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take?

Right now there are guys out there trying to make the team. IF Cisco was hogging the ball to try and work himself out of some kind of slump, that's not what I'd want to see.

If you're a shooter, you should know the difference between a summer league game, a practice and the real season and you should be able to figure out that it's not about you getting your shot back.

I thought that was Jason Williams who said that on a day when a couple of his random 30 footers decided to go in. No problem with shooters continuing to take open shots when they come, but don't force it and at least try and create something for someone else.

Yeah Garcia had 5 assist. He did force some things. But you have to think they have all been together all of what maybe 2 weeks at best. They have no chemistry they were just playing backyard ball. Garcia made sure China didn't go on runs. So he shot the ball it wasn't near as hoggish as some make it out to be. I mean aside from Hawes nobod else is really an "offensive player" Justin did his work by being open when ppl would drive and he rebounded the ball and put them back up.

BTW it was Michael Jordan that said you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. and he was refering game winning shots not the whole game. He will also go on to tell you that he missed alot more game winning shots than he made.

I absolutely agree that Garcia was not a ball hog in that game. If anything he initiated the offense better and more consistently than any one on the floor for either team. PG Jeter stood at the top of the key dribbling with little or no penetration. Shakur played worse than Jeter in trying to get into his own flow and move the Kings offense. I said it before in this thread. Garcia almost seemed bored when he discovered the level of competition and could have scored 35 with 10 assists at least if he wanted to and given enough minutes.

I guess I must be misunderstanding because I'm reading that Cisco didn't try because he apparently thought he was better than everyone else?

Why wouldn't he want to shine? This is SUMMER LEAGUE. It's what the players do. If he's bored, maybe he should think about another profession.

Don't read too much into it. It was simply obvious that he was the best player (at least guard-forward) in the game on either team. It's one game against a China team looking completely over-matched.

I love Garcia's multi-dimensional game as a rising Kings star. He did shine for the most part in this rather boring game (thanks to inept TC) that ended with the Kings winning by 26. But what do I know, that same Team China just beat the Cavs 86-85 tonight.

Gotta love the Summer League!:D Not sure what TC was doing last night against us, but they sure looked like a TOTALLY different team today against the Cavs youthful squad with Danial Gibson and the bunch.

Thanks you guys for the play by play and the encouraging words about Spencer, JWill2, Cisco.

I love JWill, that guy is awesome. Can games by viewed after the fact, or are they lost for good? Why can some people see the game and others cannot, is this related to internet transfer speed?

I'm going through a nasty divorce and back in Illinois a little outside Chicago and will definately be buying the NBA package and watching my Kings. I moved from Sacto over a month ago.

I like the Bulls too as they have a nice young team a few years ahead of where we will be hopefully pretty soon.

Go KINGS!!!!!

Do you guys see a chemisty with Hawes and Williams? From what I hear there games complement each other quite well. In this combo, would Williams be the Center or PF, how about Hawes. He seems to be a Miller with much more moves, while Williams is there complete opposite and a very good athlete grabbing up all the rebounds, but having trouble with scoring other then dunks after going up for the rebound.
His nice size increase is encouraging, I hope he converts his free throws and learns a few post moves.

I'd love if we can have Miller and SAR come off the bench if we don't trade them, that is and play Williams and Hawes a lot this coming season!!!! :D

Of course during Summer League he might be taking too many shots, but as a shooter you don't want to see him pass up a shot, and become somewhat hesitant because of nerves..

The crux of the matter is I'm trying to judge him by what I've read here, since I couldn't see the game and that's simply not fair.

I'm going to reserve any kind of judgment and just vicariously enjoy the games.

:)

Since tomorrow's Kings game is being shown on NBA TV does that mean that it won't be available via webcast?
I'm not 100%, but I think I remember seeing the webcast option listed next to the NBA TV listing on the schedule. So in other words, I think so yes. If not, I'm sure those of us here will be giving plenty of insight to the happenings of the game.

I just checked my dish schedule and it starts at 1 PM PT.
