I don't have a problem with this. He needs to play and gain experience. Hopefully he'll get to work on some of the things he needs to learn, like passing the ball, and just learning different offences. Better to play in Reno than sit on the bench with the Kings. He'll even have some familar faces there. Both Sloan and the other Landry are on the team.
IMO playing in D-League help you get better in D-League. Playing in the NBA help you get better in the NBA even in limited time. Unless we're playing for the playoff or something, I don't see the point on sending him to D-League. Get him into practice and developed him.
