The secret is, at least in my case, don't listen to any of them very much. I listen to Rome about 10 to 15 minutes a day. Since I am just an NBA fan, I don't get much. Listen to Grant about 15 to 20 minutes a day and he is the best source of Kings stuff for me. I know Jason through listening to 10 minutes or so daily for years. Like him. Just in the last year I have a few minutes a day of Dave. He seems OK. I only listen in the car and I don't drive very much. Don't like it when you have multiple host chatter - drives me crazy no matter who it is.
Summary: don't listen much and turn it off if you don't enjoy it.

The Rise Guys are, and have been, twice the show of ANY of the current KHTK people.
Professional, prepared, funny - their show has consistently been better.
KHTK never should have let them go.
My guess is that KHTK isn't a very hard place to want to leave - their management strikes me as being incredibly stupid and arrogant.

As far as sport radio in Sacramento it's mostly lacking, attracting a bottom of the barrel, immature, hired cheap joke - err, jock. I doubt any of these local KHTK characters could survive in major market - including Grant Napear. His brash style is not made for Sac, more NY City or east coast stich but even they would never tolerate such an arrogant twit. Maybe Carmichael Dave could land major market gig if he ever wanted to move up since apparently courted by top sports radio station in Houston few years back. I never understood why anyone listens to Rome whose silliness is so worn out, the grunts, the 80s soundtrack, all the rest. 1320 is it for me when driving around town, not 1140.

Love it or hate it, Grant has said numerous times that his brash, curt behavior and "rants" are proven to be bigger ratings draws. More people listen when he acts like that.
Grant has filled in for Rome numerous times and he is fantastic on that show. His own show its hit or miss. I hate the yelling grant, it's obnoxious and much like a bad reality show.

Happened to catch that interview as I was driving. I had not gotten irritated and flipped the channel yet as Grant was being oddly...... complimentary, and wasn't off on some rant yet. I was extremely impressed with Kostos Koufos. Bright, articulate, seems like a real character guy (hmm, Vlade's theme) The interview is worth a listen. Then Grant went on about how HE has been calling for a culture change for 6 years and gave Vlade props for finally bringing this about. This wouldn't normally rub me the wrong way, except the only 'culture change' I ever caught Grant ranting about DeMarcus (why I don't listen usually) Then he started bitching about the broccoli stench in the hallway of KHTK, so I shut it off.

I really don't get the Grant hate. He's 10x better than anybody else on KHTK. Seems like most around here just hate him because he goes off on "rants" or his dislike for DMC. Do you only want to listen to somebody who you agree 100% with? I don't agree with everything he says but it's at least entertaining to listen to. I have tried to listen to the midday show and I just can't listen to more than a few minutes. It's so bad I actually feel sorry for the guys.
I listen to him most days driving home from work to get updated Kings info.
It's not the rants, it's the fact that he is frequently two-faced. He rails on a player or coach and then, when interviewing them, doesn't ask the critical questions that would lend insight to his complaints, etc.
Also, working for both the Kings broadcast crew and KHTK means there is a bit of conflict of interest. He can't be truly on one side of the fence or another (part of the Kings or part of the radio station). He just waffles along as he goes. I just know that when he starts delving into who is causing issues in the locker room or similar stuff he is often espousing someone in the Kings org "talking points" - we just never know who is giving him those points to address. For instance, yesterday he was going off on PDA for the mess he made before he left and I NEVER recall such discussion while PDA was here, even though it was obvious to everyone here that PDA was causing some issues. So...regime change and all of a sudden Grant starts slinging new mud. That kind of stuff.
Grant is a radio personality. People are allowed to like or dislike him. In fact, his ratings depend upon it. Speaking for myself only, I dislike the difference between his commentator persona and his "I wanna be Jim Rome" radio personality.
Fair enough....and, yeah, that "Jim Rome" thing is irritating. "Let's go to the 530...John, you're on the air." So annoying!
Grant used to crap on Rome and now he's a fill-in for him. Always makes me laugh Neither ever say anything interesting, so it works out for both. Cannot stand Rome to be honest. Dane Cook of sports.

I haven't looked at radio ratings lately, but I wonder how well 1320 does without having the Kings and doing less Kings talk overall than their competitor. (Takes a look) Seems 1320 is doing better overall. It may just be that ESPN's band of idiots is better than what fills time slots around Dave or Grant.
Dave is great radio. His new trio works very well. Don Geronimo is great radio, but I think he just wants a mellow gig at this point. I enjoyed Koz, but I think he was much better on TV with Kayte. Kayte I like both TV/Radio.

I tried to listen again today....In the brief time I listened, Grant again tried to push his "DeMarcus is a horrible team mate and no one wants to play with him' agenda (sprinkled amongst some talk of the A's) The difference in today's opining is that he actually used past tense terms to speak of it, gave Valde mad props and said we would see 'a whole new Cousins' now, thanks to Vlade. While I agree that Vlade has had, and will continue to have, a profound influence on both the Kings and DeMarcus, I see it as Grant covering his azz. People don't take team mates they 'don't like playing with' to visit their home country, they don't invite them to their charity events. If you are slacking on the court, will DeMarcus call you on it? hell to the yes... as he should. Is he the devil incarnate that Grant paints him to be? None of the facts I have seen bear that out. I doubt Grant will ever be super supportive of DeMarcus, further than he can take credit for 'calling' anything, and his loyal followers will forget his venom and follow the new narrative, should things pan out the way we hope. If they don't, Grant and his minions will crucify DeMarcus upon the cross of all of our broken dreams.
I think that the second part of that statement is one hundred percent true, and is entirely reason why he gets ratings. I'm not sure how well his schtick actually "works," though...

I agree about the "stage" difference in his two roles but I can't work it up to "disliking" it. I take the good Kings stuff out of it and pretty much ignore the rest. I wouldn't want to replace him in either job. It suits my purposes.

Grant's show has improved after the Rondo signing. He was annoying the heck out me for a bit.
Man Dave's show is terrible without him though, couldn't listen for more than 5 minutes.

I blame Goodyear for that. Although, to be fair, I ride for my fellow veterans, and it's easy to blame Goodyear, because he doesn't appear to be any good at his job. Plus, I've heard Goodyear on his own, and found it to be generally unpleasant. I'd have to hear Corey on a show without Goodyear to evaluate if he's any good or not.

I think this is a great way to explain it. I wish i could add more to the discussion, but I just simply think Nate's show is awful. JRoss makes it bearable, but with JRoss out these past two weeks, I can't even listen. Something has to change there. I used to love listening to KHTK during my lunch breaks.. can't do that anymore.

Grant is an awful PBP guy, I don't know how anyone tolerates him. His abrasive radio personality is irritable, to put it nicely.

Should bring back Phantom and pair him with Jason Ross in the day time. (yes I know he's doing Don Geronimo's podcast right now) Or put Phantom with CD and bring back the old Midday crew. This midday show is unacceptable at this point. Can you imagine how bad it's going to get with No Kings news for the next few months?
