Kevin's value

Do u guys think other teams would want k-mart, obviously he had a good year, much better than his rookie season. But are we the only ones high on him, or would he have value to other teams. Im sure hakim warrick is loved in memphis and granger in indiana, etc.
so do u guys think k-mart will live up to some of the hype hes receiving, or are we the only fans who think he's going places.
Not that i want to, but would other teams trade a decent big for k-mart?

Who would be our starting shooting guard then--salmons? Some players are not worth giving up. K-mart is staying.

No, I've seen a lot of other fans talk good about Kevin, and the other announcers have many times.

Kevin isn't near worth a "decent big". Kevin's only being dealt if it involves a high-level star, possibly even then he wouldn't because of other guys on our team.

He's definitely being recognized around the league. He's had some SI and espn coverage I think at least. Could have sworn someone posted some SI article about him, maybe it was just ESPN.

Would another team trade a decent big for him?? I don't think it matters because he's our starting 2 guard now and he's not going anywhere.

It's almost impossible to find a decent big with a contract similar to Kevin's and that's essential for any trade to work.

It would be dumb to trade Kevin now given his good attitude and his apparent improvement every season. Why not wait as his value sky rockets if you want to trade him, however at the point why trade him at all.

"his apparent improvement every season"
How often do you plot curves based on one datapoint?

This is a ridiculous idea anyways.

i completely agree here. the kid could be a budding star and potential stud. he is really growing into his own and is could have an exciting future with the kings. it would be a tad pre-mature to think about trading the kid right now, unless a major piece was involved. even then, i would hesitate to do it without seeing another season or two from him.

Well, when he came into the league he was too weak and had no mid-range... First year he bulked up, but sat. Second season he develops a mid-range. Then his problem was he wasn't agressive enough. Offseason he gets to the line 17 times per game. He was the Wade of the summer league (FT wise). It appears that he has improved his flaws, and will continue to improve them. I can't say he will be great, but I can say he will continue to improve.

Yeah, Doc. He's been in SI a couple of times. The first time (I believe) was back in January '04.

Everytime I read power rankings or other articles on the Kings, they usually mention the core as: Artest, Bibby, and Martin. No, fans here are not the only ones who hold him in high regards.

Heres one example I can find:

Kings GM Geoff Petrie raised some eyebrows by passing on point guard Marcus Williams, but it's hard to argue with his track record. The Kings needed a shooting guard with some pop off the bench, and this wiry little guy led the Big East in scoring. He could be a Bobby Jackson-type, able to take some pressure off Mike Bibby, Ron Artest and Kevin Martin.

Steve Kerr also always speaks highly in regards Martin and he rarely mentions things about the team.

One more year and our K-Mart will be border line all-star!!!!! This was the 3rd year I saw him in summer league and the difference this year was amazing over last and even over what we saw him do in regular season.
Sure it was summer league but comparing him to the best there and last year is where one sees the all-star qualities come out. With polish and aggressiveness you there is no end to his abilities.

Thanks for the scouting report CruzDude. It's good to see him getting to the line because Kevin is an excellent free throw shooter...we haven't had one as good since Peja.

If I had to rate K-Marts value on a 1-10 I would give it a 7.5. On the other hand I would rate Bonzi a 7. Based purely on age/salary. Kevin has shown signs of being a great player, and if we had to move K-Mart, or Bonzi I feel that K-Mart would move in a heart beat. He makes next to nothing, and has all this upside. Of course I woudl rather have both!! K-Mart is going to have an awesome opportunity this year, and I hope he is up for it.

sean elliott was commentating in one of the games vs the spurs during the first round series (not sure which game). He called K-Mart a ball boy for looking young and scrawny but with K-Mart's performance he made him shut ellioitt's mouth. (He kinda like said, this ball boy is killing us, I should better stop calling him like that) LOL

Anyway if i rate K-Mart's value from 1-10, i would give him a seven. He plays ala Rip plus the dunking and 3 point shooting. He is a good defender but has trouble guarding stronger sg/sf like kobe, LBJ, J-Rich, good thing we have ron-ron

Martin is gonna tear it up, does anyone got his stats from when he started in place of Bonzi last year?

Starts: 41

33.8min 13.7pts (.511 .423 .840) 4.7rebs 1.8ast 0.9stl 0.2blk 1.5?TO*

TO are jsut a guess because for whatever reason they are not listed during starts, so that's a projection based upon his full season numbers.

14 and 5 would be very solid numbers for our starting OG. Just need to find some way to replace Bonzi's toughness and rebounding.

Kevin needs to take it up a notch in: 1) rebounding (which his personal trainer guaranteed he would do this coming season) to make up, in part, for Bonzi's loss and 2) seeing the floor better in finding teammates when he makes his moves (assists need to go up to around 4 per game). If he can do that and maintain a 13-15 ppg scoring average as a starter, I would say that he has taken another step forward and will give the team what it needs. On defense, it would be nice to see him use his superb quickness to help his teammates out a bit more (a la Christie), rather than solely making sure his assignment is covered.

...four assists per game? Woah. That's over-expecting for that, isn't it? I'd expect high 1s-high 2s.

Kevin's shown he's a good rebounder already, so I'd say that'll be covered. He'll get high 4s-5 per game. He's shown already he's quick on defense, and at least solid in general. He'll improve there as well. Points? That'll be fine. He's added significant and noticeable mass to his body.

He already rebounds well for a guy of his build. Not expecting any great steps forward there. He's no Bonzi, but then again look at their builds.

He's never averaged many assists even back in college. Its not in his game. Reminds me a bit of the old desire for Peja to rack up more assists. I had many complaints about Peja, but asking him to get more assists just wasn't in his game.

The thing that would be nice would be the ability to be more disruptive on defense and rack up steals. As is, he averaged less than 1 a game last year even as a 34min starter. That's quite low and down there in the range normally reserved for poor defenders, which Kevin isn't necessarily.

I would be willing to give up K-Mart for someone like Michael Redd or something the Fans and Organization are in live with Kevin.

Well, luckily, you aren't the Kings GM. First, Michael Redd isn't going anywhere. Second, Kevin has shown tremendous improvement and is only going to get better.

He's got youth and energy and focus and determination. Of course the fans and organization are excited about him. Why wouldn't they be?
