Jason Thompson IS THE REAL DEAL!

Well you brought it up so here you go. in 2002 Gooden started the year off starting. Yao got about 15 min a game. Drew put up 12pts 6reb. Yao 10 and 5reb. Now once Yao started he got double double at least every other game. Now lets jump to 2008. Beasley is the one starting and JT is coming off the bench. Yet JT has the better numbers. Hmmmmm may want to come with another comparison.

Have you seen any of the Miami games?? Beasley isn't looking bad. Its not like he is having bad game. Now I assume you have seen the kings games. Does JT look as if he is playing his best? I don't think so. In fact if not for the game in which JT got 11 min with 2pts 2reb. I wonder what his averages would look like without that game?

I don't understand this need some have that the #1,#2,#3 picks just have to be better than the #12 or so. The only reason JT wasn't a top 5 pick is because of his college. Had he done that at a bigger name school he would have been. Every GM questioned if it would translate from Rider to the NBA in fact many ppl here did the same. Turns out it looks like it is going to translate.

But by all means you let me know when is the best time to do JT vs. Beasley comparisons. 20 games? 30? signs show that it will be the same. Now if JT had the 34 min that beasley has you would be agreeing with me.

Beasley is also a couple years younger than Thompson. It's not even 10 games in to the year and you want to declare thompson the better deal right away?

Roundtable: Early rookie returns, East improvements and more

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/basketball/nba/11/18/writers.roundtable/index.html#

1. Which rookie has impressed you the most so far?

Chris Mannix: Several rookies have been impressive (Mayo, Rose, Beasley, Gasol), but the one I have been most impressed with is Jason Thompson. When the Kings took Thompson with the 12th pick, I was ready to engrave his name on the 2008 Draft Bust Award right then and there. But Thompson has been solid and, at times, spectacular. He is averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 25.6 minutes, and has shown the ability to swing between both forward positions. He may not turn out to be a star like Rose or Beasley, but the Kings may have found themselves a starting forward for the next decade.

Steve Aschburner: It's hard to quibble with Rose's early production while shouldering the pressure of being the No. 1 pick. Mayo is getting every opportunity to succeed in Memphis and mostly seizing them. But the guy who caught my eye on opening night was Sacramento's Thompson. He had 18 and 10 against Minnesota, and totaled 31 points and 20 boards in back-to-back games last week against the Pistons and Clippers. He hasn't blocked a shot in more than two weeks, but he's got a long, lively build and a swell future.

I would take Thompson over Beasley, mostly because I think that
Beasley is a true SF, and said so before the draft. He's only around 6'7.5" without shoes. Makes him around Kenny Thomas size. That doesn't make Thompson better than him, it just means Thompson fills a need for us at the PF position.

I agree that it might take a couple of years to really make a judgement.

The key to Thompson's early successes is his " all-out effort " whenever he plays. The kid is a workhorse. The Kings should be happy it was him that they got.

Maybe Beasley has more moves and talent than Thompson ( for now ), but if Thompson continues to exert the kind of extra effort he gives now, I wouldn't be surprise if Thompson turns out more talented and valuable than Beasley in the near future.

With Thompson's skillset and intensity, he would be at best a Chris Webber if he can add more offensive skills in his arsenal. A Dennis Rodman at best if he stops learning offensive skills, but continues to learn the art of rebounding. The very least a Boris Diaw, if he stops and never improve on his skills.

Thompson's ceiling is C-Webb, but his basement is Channing Frye. He'll be closer to the former if he stays aggressive attacking the hoop (and learns to finish with his left hand), but if he decides to be the jumpshooting softie, then he'll be the latter.

Yeah, please keep Thompson at PF.

And yes, he's going to be quite a player. Top 5 rookie for sure.

Exactly. Thompson should easily be starting and Mikki should barely be seeing the floor. Not hard to see that JT was better than Mikki from day one. Plus it's just wasting time having Mikki out there as much as he is.

totally agree, with cisco and martin coming back dontes mins are bound to suffer. We shouldnt put JT in the same situation when mikki returns to fitness. We must continue to develop our rookies especially JT

???

You do realize Geoff Petrie picked Jason Thompson intentionally, right? It was a number of fans who had no idea what the Kings were doing selecting him - at least not until they actually saw him play for the first time.

I don't want to start another thread but... NO MORE Mikki Moore!! NO Matter What!! That's it!! OVER, DONE!! Jason Thompson is a walking double-double nearly every night out, besides his amazing versatility. Donte has a ways to go, Spence can slide in and out at C/PF - but JT is there - completely - totally... JT must remain a starter! If Moore can't take it like a professional stick him down there at the end of the bench with K-dog and/or look to trade him.

I remember the 100 "Fire Petrie" threads that got started that day, people were furious. Spencer Hawes? Jason Thompson? Two wasted draft picks for sure. :D

You can throw the draft analysts in there too. Boy did Petre shut those "experts" up or what with these two picks? I remember reading one article where a columnist for CNNSI stated that when they called Thompson's name and Stern said that he was not in the building, that said it all. So this begs the question, how do you get to be an expert or write columns and have strong opinions when you cant even be objective? Draft picks are totally hit or miss (more so in the NBA than the NFL) and you just never know. Too bad these fools dont understand that. If you could go back on here, I actually praised Petrie on the pick. I like how Thompson had proven himself against the tougher competition and outdualed Beasley in their meeting. A lot of these smaller conference teams are totally underrated as well. I.E. Normally half of the Missouri Valley Conf. could take on most of the Big Ten.

Well...this was actually Jason's first strong start in a long time -- Clippers game really was the last (and the only other double double on the year). But I certainly agree about the Mikki sentiment. Bringing him back in as the starter now would just be stupid. Take the injury as a blessing and an excuse, and let's get this kid out there for a full season and see what he can do.

There's always going to be a certain amount of inconsistancy with any young player, so no surprise there. The thing is, that even on his bad nights, he's better or just as good as Mikkie. The kid really needs to work on his left hand. I've seen him use it a couple of times, but I guess old habits are hard to break, as he inclined to switch to his right at the last moment. The league will catch on and make it more and more difficult for him.

I think his defense is improving, so the more playing time the better. Even at their worst, Hawes and Thompson at least bring energy on to the floor.

By the way. Is it just me, but does it appear that Miller has been sleepwalking through half the game?

Also JT's firs 4 or so starts were at SF. Now he is at PF and I thought did a very good job against a very talented frontcourt. Jason has alot to learn and you can see things he learns each game.

Forgetting his 18/10 debut? :p

I agree that Jason should start. He already brings more to the table than Moore does. Also, has much more upside and potential to improve, whereas I think Moore is pretty much capped out on his skills.

I've noticed that when Reynolds says things like "Jason should use his left hand more," and "he should develop a short hook," then boom, next game he IS doing those things. Shows a strong desire to learn and improve, and the ability to do so.

I'm blown away by how fast he seems to learn little things like this. When the season started, they were talking about how he needed to learn to shoot the mid-range jumper, and now that's a high percentage shot for him. Those kinds of little skills can take some players seasons to learn, and he picks them up relatively quickly.

If he can learn some post moves from Spencer...oh boy.

My thought was that since he seems to be working on whatever flaw is pointed out to him, merely stating the obvious might do the trick.

:)

I like him, I like him a lot. He's another Petrie gem I think will end up totally astounding a lot of his early critics.
