is Kevin Martin Reggie Theus reborn?

does kevin martin kinda remind you of reggie theus? not the pg skills, but the style.

I do think Kevin Martin needs to stop with the nice guy image and needs to be a killer. The dude has a 40''+ vertical, pretty decent shooter(thnx to coachie) I know he is still young. he is my favorite player, but i think he can be better than Rip.

I'm really not old enough to have ever even seen Reggie play, but from what I've heard, NO! Besides the fact that they're both probably good looking (I wouldn't know!), I don't see anything they have in common. Theus was said to be a ball hog, that's something Kevin definetly isn't. And since when has Martin a 40+ inch vert?? He's very athletic, but I doubt he's got 40+.

Theus was a lot more aggressive and assertive than Kevin has been, but he wasn't a ball hog. Look at his stats, especially his assists, and I think that pretty much belies the "ball hog" rumor.

;)

Actually, Cisco Garcia is some ways is more like Reggie Theus if you want a better comparison. Theus was a point guard that also played on the wing a lot. Theus about the same height as Kevin Martin, but he was never a skinny rail 185 lbs. - more like 205 and fairly buffed. Also, and this is extremely important. Theus was runner up rookie of the year in the NBA and twice an NBA all-star within his first five years in the league. He was a leader at UNLV, quickly becoming a recognized leader/floor general when he entered the NBA.

I actually always thought that! I mean, how could he have so many assists and be a ball hog! Thanks for that. :)

I am not commenting on Reggie himself but more on the stats. Stats can be interpreted any way you like. If you look at Iverson or Marbury, the stats wouldn't say they are ball hogs but if you watch them play you pretty much come to the conclusion that they are ball hogs.

You can talk about stats all you wish. I was there. I saw Reggie play numerous times so my comments are based more on personal reflection than just statistics. I simply used the "assists" comment to point out an obvious exception to the "ball hog" label to someone who obviously HADN'T seen Theus and the early Kings play.

Ball hog, gunner, and worse were all thrown around wildly in describing negatively Theus' game - vastly overstated IMO. It's hard to imagine that there was enough balls or minutes to go around when the Kings arrived in Sac for those first few seasons. The back court was one of the strongest and biggest in NBA at the time, with point guards Reggie Theus, 6'7 and Larry Drew, 6'4. The shooting guards were Eddie Johnson 6'7 and Mike Woodson 6'5. Johnson would sometimes play the 3 spot and Theus would sometimes be at 2. Just too bad the bad management broke it up so fast by shipping off Drew and Woodson for the Clippers Derrick Smith. Then a year later Theus was sent packing for essentially Randy Whitman and a higher draft pick that the Kings used to select Ricky Berry - and we all know how tragic that turned out to be. Then to make matters worse, Derrick Smith who had been one of the leagues top 3 scorers (and probably deserved the ball hog cliche) arrived with a known weak knee and soon blew it out for a major bust in Sac.

Ahem. Ask Stephon Marbury.

P.S. As an aside: Derrick Smith was never top 3 in the league in scoring. He topped out at 22ppg, and in 11 games the year he blew out his knee was averaging 23.5. Still well back of the Birds, Vandeweghes, Dantleys of the era.

Garcia is more like him - handles the ball, passes, shoots, better defender.

That's probably almost as much of s stretch. Cisco is the far better rounded player. Reg did two things: 1) shoot/score, and 2) creative OG or big PG. He did not defend, rack up steals, blocks, rebounds, hustle points or anything else along those lines. All things I would put at the core of Cisco's game.

Reg was...well, not like any current King, and I'm not sure he was similar to any King of the modern era. He could have been somewhat like a much more offfensively aggressive Brent Barry, but never the athelte, and Barry's defining trait was long his unselfishness so its a stretch.

As I said, I'm not young enough to have seen Reggie play. But Marburys talent is not questionable, he's extremely talented, he just never seemed to put it together with a good attitude.

Reggie was not Starbury -- just pointing out that you can rack up a lot of assists and still be a ball hog.

Hmm...you know initially I wasn't seeing it either, but its starting to come into focus: :D

Jeeez! Talk about getting you knickers in a knot over nothing

Stop taking things so personally! I said that stats can be interpreted any way. If you looked at stats alone no one would say that Marbury is a ball hog. I never said that Reggie was or wasn't a ball hog. I just said that stats don't tell the story.

Take a chill pill and relax and stop taking everything so personally

lol...

All I did was point out that I had actually seen Reggie play, since I'm reasonably sure you never had the opportunity.
