Is Bonzi pulling a Sprewell?

Melvin Ely: Despite a history of injury problems, the 6 10 big-man is entering his prime and is going to find work. He's a restricted free agent, but the Bobcats are willing to negotiate a sign-and-trade if a team wants him bad enough. I'd give him a three-year deal at a reasonable rate and hope I end up with a bargain.

I was wondering why I do not remember any one mentioning this guy. By this description he sounds ok for us. Then I looked up his stats, does anybody like this guy?

Has the physique, but he's more offensive minded than much of a rebounder/defender. Still, at thi spoint if we signed him I'd be modestly happy. He's a decent big who can score in close, and more physical than anythign else we try to call a PF around here.

I'd take him back on that deal. :)

But who would you sit for Bonzi minutes? Kevin? no way. Salmons? don't know but somehow I think Petrie has a reason for him in the 1-2 spot. Bonzi got a lot of rebs but down low with Artest and Miller. Kinda hard to fast break if only 2 are running.

I like Ely. Can defend in the post, not a quality shotblocker, but will block a number of shots, long, decent scorer, pretty good rebounder.

He doesn't really bring anything more to the table that KT and SAR don't except for size. That said, he still isn't a better rebounder than KT and he's not quite as good of a scorer as SAR. He can play some Center though, and he's better than Woods. I don't see much of a use for him though at this point.

Always liked Big Mel. We have talked about him a few times arround here, but in general the discussion allways drifts back to shot blockers and rebounders. Mel can do some of that but is essentially a down and dirty grinder in the low post... might work well with Brad. Not the guy to solve all the Kings problems but he could fit in as a legit back up at the 4 and fill in at the 5 even. Problem of course is he offers little at the 5 and with both Kenny and SAR at the 4 Im not sure I see the point in sigining him. Now if the Kings could shed Kenny's contract for even cap space it would make sense to bring in Mel.

Oh good lord, now you are gettign completely goofy. Bonzi Wells is just a teensy weensy little bit better than John bleeping I celebrate when I score 5 pts in a game Salmons.

It it getting silly, seeing people post these goofy nutty posts alot of people are underestimating what Bonzi did for us and thus they keep posting crazy comments.

Fact of the matter is, we are having a awful off-season like 113 and others who still have faith in a trade i was the same dude who also expected a trade but now that faith is all but gone.

i think we have no motives to make us "Significantly" better because at this point we haven't improved that much and we have down-graded instead of upgrading our roster.

Oh, come on. I really don't think it's fair to characterize Salmons like that. It's not like he's the one proclaiming himself to be all that and a bag of chips.

I really think the reactions at both ends of the spectrum have gotten just a little carried away.

I suspect the truth is somewhere between the two extremes.

The truth is John Salmons was wanted by some of the top GM's in the league. I'll take their opinions on him over some message board member any day.

1. Saying we had an awful offseason is your opinion, not fact.

2. To get a true sense of feeling on how our offseason went, look at our competitors. What did they do? No one significantly improved (except the Hornets for a whole lotta $$$), some of them digressed, and some of them didn't do anything. We didn't lose much ground to anybody...we are hoping that our young guys develop, that Salmons and Woods reach their potential, and a full season of Ron will help improve our record. If that happens we will be better. It wasn't a great offseason, but it wasn't bad either IMO.

4. I don't know what Geoff could have done other than throwing a 5-year deal at Bonzi to get him to stay...oh wait, he did do that. :p

5. I know your response will be something along the lines of calling me crazy, but this is truly what I believe and with a new coach and some marginal upgrades at key positions (backups at PG and C), I think we can have a good season, possibly making it to the second round of the playoffs, which will be better than last year. That will be something to build upon and encourage the Maloofs to possibly spend over the luxury tax in future seasons. That is an attainable goal isn't it?

6. Finally, add in the progress being made about a new arena and I think it was a pretty solid off-season for the Sacramento Kings.

I can't wait for Salmons to prove us all wrong. Hey, at least we won't see much of Hart anymore!

^ i like the not-losing-ground perspective. but at the same time, just because no one else significantly improved and neither did we, it's not a cause for celebration. that's not playing to win, it's playing to not lose.

i'm a little nervous when our relative success next season hinges so largely on hope.

So just because we don't think the team will go 1-81 and be in the lottery means we're crazy huh? We haven't said anything like "yeah, WINNIN DA CHAMPIONCHIPZ BABY!" All we've done is say that the team isn't exponentially worse and that it's still very possible that the team could actually be good. It is the other end of the spectrum saying stuff like:

"We should've tried harder to keep Bonzi!"-Why would you try harder to overpay a guy who's already 30 and has been an attitude problem every time except his contract year. Why would you make Kevin sit on the bench for a few years to make Bonzi happy even though there's a good chance he can be better pretty soon? Why would you over pay for someone that doesn't want to be here? We offered him a good deal a couple times, Bonzi said no, we stopped trying once it became clear he wouldn't be here anymore and got Salmons.

"Salmons and Woods are going to make this team a lottery team! They are the type of player lottery teams pick up!" Nobody has said they'll be great, people just want you guys to give them a chance. Just because we added them doesn't mean we're going to be a lottery team. With the money left Woods is a solid pick up who still might show something. You guys are acting like we expect 10/10/3 from him but it's obvious that WE DON'T. If we get 4/5/1 I'll be happy considering it was only like 900k. Salmons is a good pick up and he's better than just getting nothing at all. It was CLEAR Bonzi was gone, Geoff went and picked up Salmons. It's not the other way around, Bonzi wasn't pleading to stay but Geoff saying "Sorry Bonzi, I think this guy Salmons is infinitely better than you. You're a good player but I don't want you on the roster because I'm hoping to be in the lottery!" This team is still talented and they proved it when they played well last year without Bonzi after adding Ron.

Tend to agree there.

Not really sure at all about all these "goofy nutty posts" in relation to Bonzi being underrated. There may be some who are like that, but I think you're overreacting.

Also, chap, me and you already discussed our feelings on being significantly better than last season (since I said it just lately). So, why bring that up again? I don't see where that's relevant in this thread.

What a random post.

I wonder why no one has picked him up yet? Finding bigs that can score and play both the 4/5 isn't easy...

Guess it's his demands, and I think he's been tied up with some stuff with Charlotte (S/T).

You know, there was a time when our resident cartoonist, Mad D, would have taken that comment and made a great cartoon about it.

I miss those times.

;)

I think people tend to overlook the fact that we did make a major move this offseason that is going to drastically affect the product on the court. Give the new coach a year and reassess our needs at that point. Conveniently we have a lot of expiring deals that will give us some flexibility at the trade deadline and going into next season. If you are expecting a championship this season you are in for a major disappointment, but if you look at the grand scheme of things you see we may be setting ourselves up quite nicely for a real run in a year or two.

Tend to agree at least.....I hope so. I certainly have not given up hope yet.

Then again this team has to really go at it now too. In a year we may be Bibby-less. In two we may be Artest-less. You never know.

I think our best off-season move is assuring as little playing time possible for Jason Hart. :D

Sorry to ask this silly question but why do u guys don't like Jason Hart? I thought he's pretty good?

^ didn't follow the NBA for entire last year and just picked it back up :p

He played well in isolated spurts but was pretty ineffective overall, especially offensively. With a new coach and changes to the team, who knows how he'll play this year, but not many folks were very impressed with his play last year....
