So yay! We could recreate that long run of er...success from that era? I'm not exactly sure 39-43 and a first round sweep exactly qualifies as shocking the world anyway. Do remember that Rich Kelley sprang forth to give us one big out of nowhere game against the Twin Towers though. Ahh....the good ole days. May they never be seen again.

Actually, the risky trade for Derrick Smith (injured All-Star) broke up that team. If my memory serves me, that team had one of the best 2nd halves that year. Not that they were world beaters, but the trade was the beginning of the "success from that era."

The trade did hurt, but we still sucked wiht or without it. We had a LOSING season. People just get the golden oldies warm and fuzzies about a losing bunch of softies because aww, they were our first. Sorry, but true. Its like that first girl/boyfirend who had really bad hygiene and not a clue what they were doing, but hey, it was your first, so awwww... Otis was strangely quiet that year, and that left just Tank and Olberding to try to make up for the fact that we had this whole pack of consciousless, defenseless, gunners out on the perimeter chucking up junk and cherry picking until the other team scored again so they could get more shots off. They were losing before they hit Sacto, lost in Sacto, and all went on to lose after they left Sacto (except EJ, who was a good 6th man).

I myself am vaguely fond of them for the same reason as everyone else, but I never forget exactly what they were and weren't. In fact in our long (now) history in Sacto, and long LOSING history in Sacto (its not coincidence) if you had to pick a defining trait for the Kings year in and year out its been softness. Aside from that one brief time in the mid 90s with Animal Smith and BGrant, and then a couple of years at our contention peak, we've just eternally been too pretty and not tough enough.

Why not just start Salmons at PG? That way we could showcase him for a trade. He has gotten double digit assists before and I think it would benefit him to play with Kevin. If we are worried about defense, he is replacing Bibby, so it is not as if its a downgrade defensively.

I personally hope that if we trade Bibby, we get a proper PG in return. If not, as much as I am against using some or all of the MLE this year, I say we go and get a PG.

While the idea of getting kids some burn and suck properly for one year to get a high pick next year is very enticing, I don't think the kids would develop properly without a good floor leader. As much as we like Price's hustle and energy, are intrigued by QD's potential, or appreciate the ball handling skills of Cisco, Salmons and even Ron, not to mention the creative offense of Brad from the high post, we need a starting quality PG, and we don't have one other than Mike. Kevin, Hawes, Cisco, QD, all would benefit from the presence of a proper floor leader.

My 2 cents.

Jordan Farmar. I'd like to see Artest go to the Lakers (the only team that might be able to stomach his behavior) for Farmar and whomever else makes sense from a mathematical and building point of reference.

Lakers drafted a point guard. Kings have plenty of 2 guards and if Gooden joins a 3-4 IMO.

Cool, glad somebody still remembered the guy with the single greatest name in the history of great names. If we'd just been smart enough to sign God back int he day instead of Mateen, we would have rings for every finger by now. :p
I dont think ANYONE will ever have a better name in pro sports(or amatuer) for that matter.:D (we probably could start a 'best ACTUAL names in sports' thread for some fun) How the hell(no pun intended)did that family get a last name like that, and KUDOS to his mom and pops for giving him his FIRST name!

Gotta cross Blake(and probably Atkins) off of the list of 'potential' replacements for Bibby:

Steve Blake is heading to Portland, meaning he won't have to travel far to join his new team.

The free-agent point guard said today he has agreed to a three-year deal with the Trail Blazers. Though a Florida native, Blake and his family make their offseason home in Portland.

Blake averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 assists in 49 games with the Nuggets last season. He was willing to return to Denver but opted for Portland as the Nuggets were on the verge of finalizing a contract with guard Chucky Atkins.

"That's OK, if that's the direction they want to go," Blake said in a brief phone interview. "I just decided to go back to Portland."

Blake, 27, made $1.33 million last season and was seeking a starting salary close to the NBA's $5.35 million midlevel exception.

In addition to having a home in Portland, Blake is familiar with the local NBA franchise. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.5 assists for the Blazers in 2005-06.

I voted for Garcia. He's showed repeatedly in the past that he's good at bringing the ball up the court. I would love to have a guy at PG who could be a great perimeter defender. Seeing as how we stupidly took Douby in the first rd, I have to assume he's gonna get a shot at PG with Kmart locking down the SG slot. I would really like to see if Douby can or cannot play PG, I almost feel like we have to play him at PG now because we have such a crowded group at 2 guard.

Is it too early to vote for Derrick Rose yet?
I'll take Rose, Collison, Mayo or Gordon, actually.:)

edit: thats why I have no problem trading Bibby this year, next year's draft is PG stacked, and as bad as we're gonna be this year, we definetely have a shot at one of the top picks.

edit #2: and with a bunch of power forwards becoming free agents the year after that, and us hopefully having a bunch of money to spend...this really could be a 2 year rebuild...which is quick, and fine with me.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Douby starting our 1 this year cause he's kinda undersized for #2. Might as well let him learn to play the point.

How do you know Rose will come out after next year though? ha ha. If he doesn't your plan is shot lol. The guy does look good though.

nope...we dont need another Travis Mays...Douby is a pure shooter...why confuse him and move him down to play 1 and tell him to pass?? Douby is fine where his is.

Exactly. The real answer to the question is that it does not matter who will be our point guard next year if we trade Bibby. Let one of young guys try it our to improve their vision and ball handling skills. Bring in a veteran to run the team and help our players grow and then serve as a mentor to a future PG. We are not trying to win next year, we are rebuidling, we really do not need an immediate backup plan for Bibby with this in mind. With our estimated draft position for the next year or two, we will have ample opportunity to replace Bibby with a player who will be relavent when we are ramping up to contend again.
