and.. btw...
I have never been a huge Kevin Martin apostle. but it is amazing to me to see how fast the vultures start circling... the dude is coming off an injury AND into some pretty damn unfamiliar territory-- there is a new much bigger dog in town, and i'm fairly sure Martin had grown accustomed to being the only fish of any real size in a damn small pond these last few years in Sac.
Sac fans moved from being truly awesome (rooting HARD for really chum-change teams in the mid-90s, and then rooting even HARDER for really exciting teams in the early oughts) to truly mediocre (systematically ripping apart whomever the team happens to be able to put out there as their best player... in order, and one at a time... Webber-Peja-Artest- and now Martin...?
Sacramento fans booing Kevin Martin is downright idiotic. Period. He has been THE face of the Kings, and the team's only bright spot for years...
Is he tradable right now? he is CERTAINLY not untouchable, and if he isn't traded the Kings coaches are going to have to do a better job integrating his talents into the threads of the king's new realities (with him NOT as lead dog) but BOOING him...? (or otherwise tossing him under the bus...?) ------ c'mon now
Look! I'm a big fan of Martins, and personally I wouldn't have booed him if I were at the arena. But they payed their money so they have the right to display their displeasure with any player they wish. And, as I pointed out, they paid money to go to the game. which is more than a lot of fans that sit and ***** about the team do.
To me, I think the displeasure with Martin has more to do with his body language than the results. He just looks like a whipped dog out there at times. And frankly I don't understand it. He's getting his touches and his shots. But except for one or two games, there's no outside passion being expressed. I don't know. Maybe there's something going on that we don't know about.
As far as Martin being the face of the franchise, well, if so, it was by default. By that, I mean there simply wasn't anyone left. Martin has never stood up in a crowd and then stood out. He's never been one to demand the ball. This isn't a knock on him, its just who he is. When Artest was here, who stood out more? Martin or Artest. Rightly or wrongly, it was Artest. When he was on the floor with Salmons who demanded the ball more, Martin or Salmons? Rightly or wrongly it was John Salmons.
Personally I don't think Martin likes the spotlight to be on him. Perhaps the weight is just a little too much for his shoulders. But he's the perfect number two or three guy. The guy the other team isn't paying as much attention to till he jumps up and bites you in the butt. Martin says he lobbied for drafting Tyreke. So I can't believe that there's a problem between the two of them. It appears that Tyreke is making an effort to create space for Martin and then get him the ball. But something appears to be wrong. I don't have a clue what it is, but they need to fix it, and fix it quickly.
