Woohoo! A win streak!

The game that would never end, finally did. Looked like we were just going to walk on home with it in the early 4th, but an insane 4th quarter, and a series of dumb selfish plays by our bench guys, suddenly made a game of it again in the final 5 minutes. We even had to bring back a battered and bruised Cousins to lock things back up. Throw on intentional fouling and a game that looked like it was going to be 95-85 ended up 113-106 on the back of a 44-39 4th quarter. End result = still back to back wins. There are asterisks
(their starting backcourt scored 53 against us, without Bledsoe), but again, this is Sacto -- any win is a welcome one at this point.

Mbah a Moute ( A- ) -- Last night I made the point that Mbah a Moute is kind of wasted out there if he doesn't have a dominant on-ball player to guard. Well, despite everybody on our team not named Mbah getting torched by Gerald Green last night, we went right back out there and put Mbah a Moute on P.J. Tucker again tonight, resulting in Green dropping 17 points on us by the half. Well, Malone showed that eventually he figures this sort of thing out, and he put Mbah a Moute on Green for the second half - in about 15 minutes Green scored 3 points. So it kinda worked. Luc had a good defensive night all around, not just shutting down Green in the second half but also being quite solid in team defense all game. For instance, he made a great anticipatory rotation into the lane to cut off a Gerald Green drive in the first, and he made a really nice play to smother Archie Goodwin in transition in the third. Tonight was also a great scoring night for Luc, and after missing a jumper in the first he hit his final four shots, all in the lane (once on a pick and roll, once in transition, and twice on nice feeds when he cut into the paint). This is the player I have been waiting for, and I hope his knee stays healthy. --Capt.

Thompson ( C ) -- JT started the game winning the tip for the Kings (something to celebrate as it's such a rare thing to see) and on the 1st real offensive possession of the game got the ball on the right block, made his patented move, and banked it in for the 1st Kings points of the game. After those first few seconds of glory, JT sort of disappeared out there until he picked up his 2nd foul on an offensive charge while dribbling down the lane during a fast break. He didn't get back into the game until there were 4 minutes left in the half, and he was out there for about three of them and not doing much other than hitting a nice turn-around shot in the key when the defense left him and Cousins found him for the open shot. Was quiet at the start of the half, but then had his moment in the sun when he knocked down back-to-back-to-back mid-range shots to help increase the King's lead. He came out late in the 3rd quarter and didn't really see the floor after that, as the King's reserves mostly took care of business. On defense he mostly defended Frye and Frye was a waste of space out there only taking 2 shots the entire game and missing both of them. JT had to spend a lot of time on the perimeter keeping close to Frye, so he did a good job of staying close, but it wasn't much defense except staying close to Frye. During his 2o minutes of play he also managed to grab 3 rebounds. I would normally dock him a bit for the lack of rebounding, but since he was out on the perimeter most of the time guarding Frye he gets a bit of a pass, and Frye ended up with only 1 defensive rebound, so it's not as if JT's lack of rebounding translated in the Suns getting a lot of extra rebounds. So he shot the ball efficiently and did what he was asked to do by staying with Frye, so though he didn't rebound, it seems like a C type grade this time around. --Uncia

Cousins ( B ) -- you know, 15 years from now Boogie is going to have games like these. He'll be older, slower, fatter, have more lingering aches and pains. But he'll still be that talented old man who physically mauls the skinny young whippersnappers who think they're all that. Boogie at his best has been flat awesome this season. Most talented player on the floor. Too strong, too quick, too much talent, too many instincts. He can dazzle. But this performance was not one of those. This performance was a slow motion mugging. I'm not even sure who was mugging who. But Cuz looked hurting, looked tired from the start. There was some of the slop to his game that he gets when he gets tired and starts making tired careless plays. And yet he is Godzilla to the Suns frontline, and with a tough guy coach who learned his trade from Jerry Sloan, the undersized Suns threw themselves at him desperately, bouncing off like bowling pins, banging, wrestling, getting physically overmatched. It was ugly. They may even have been doing Cuz a favor, as I'm not sure he had it tonight if left alone. Call it the shoulder, but the legs looked deadish too. There wasn't much explosion at the rim, his post moves seemed to lack conviction. But swarmed and attacked by angry little bees he just kept wading on in there again and again, taking and dishing huge amounts of physical abuse as bodies went flying in all directions. And there was leadership in the physical war. Whenever he was in there he took command of the middle and became a headache for the Suns. It looked like he was going to get some well earned rest and it was going to be a very short night for him as in the third the physical war turned heavily in our favor, and we started to blow the Suns out. But a silly 4th and some bad decisions by our bench eventually saw the Suns close back within striking distance down the stretch, and so back came the big guy to bounce bodies all over the place for another 3-4 min and stem the tide. This wasn't brilliant, wasn't pretty. There are few highlights. But like a power back in football, it was the sort of tough hardnosed men against boys brutality, on the boards, again and again to the line, that just wears opponents down. The 24 hours against the Suns (45pts 25reb) weren't quite as epic as the 24 hours against the Blazers (67pts 20reb?) a week or two ago, but its the same idea. After three decades Kings fans finally have the guy who kicks sand in the face of the weaklings, instead of being the weaklings ourselves. --Brick

McLemore ( C ) --Ben had a couple of those highlight plays we’ve grown to love from him. The first came out a timeout and ended with Ben finishing an alley oop off of the inbound pass. The second highlight was a steal that he finished with an awesome dunk. His final made field goal was a tough turn around jumper off of a pass. That’s all we ended up getting out of him on the offensive end as he missed all 3 of his 3 point shots. The Kings as a whole shared the ball pretty good tonight which is the main reason he finished with only 7 attempts. As we all know his defense is a work in progress and it really showed for the second night in a row. Green lit him up again and scored at an insane rate. At first I wasn’t sure if he was just hot or Ben was giving him too much space… as most of the shots appeared to be contested. After Luc was switched onto Green it was pretty apparent that Ben could (should?) have been doing a better job guarding him as Green cooled down significantly. --Spud

Vasquez ( D+ ) -- Made sure to start this one off by dispelling any notion that lasts night terrible defense was a fluke. Dragic had his way with him early scoring the first 11 points of the game while getting wherever he wanted. The evidence is mounting, he just doesn't have the foot speed to defend his position most nights. At the same time wasn't effective on offense. Tried to go inside a bit and punish the smaller defender, but couldn't get much done. After getting broken down one last time was mercifully replaced by IT. Came back in late second and did very little of note, luckily the same could be said of Dragic. Stepped it up on defense along with his teammates as they ground down a sluggish looking Suns team to start the second half. Wasn't involved much as the offense struggled early but then started setting the table for JT with a string of assist. Kept up the momentum from that point as the offense started to pick up and Vasquez looked comfortable for the first time all night. Game back in late fourth with Cousins to hopefully steady things as momentum appeared to be shifting. Once again didn't do much, more poor defense and a contested runner that he no business taking especially with Cousins set up with great position inside. Got to the line a bunch in final minute with game out of reach for some meaningless points. While the label "pure point guard" gets thrown around with Vasquez I'm starting to wonder if "tweener" is the more accurate label. --Henkel

Thomas ( B+ ) -- Like usual came in and had immediate impact. The difference in defense was obvious and as soon as Cousins took a seat and he got free reign was once again putting pressure on the defense. Scored in bunches and even managed a few short breaks from gunning it up to find his teammates as the second unit built a nice lead. Back in late third and once again the pressure was on. Hot start to the fourth which included a couple nice kick outs to the suddenly capably shooting Outlaw, plus the usual driving layups over some hapless back up seven footer. Then things took a turn. Seemed almost like IT decided that it was garbage time long before that was appropriate. Especially on the defensive end where Isaiah wasn't giving much of an effort and that's a kind way of putting it. Still looking to score of course, but wasn't managing the game well as guys were taking quick shots when things should of been slowing down. Another nice game where he looked perfectly suited for his role with some less then passionate play protecting the lead at the end. --Henkel

Patterson ( D+ ) -- Patterson started off the game with a fantastic offensive rebound in traffic, going over two Sun players to rip the rebound away, and then hit the 8ft jumper for the put back. Unfortunately that was the best thing he did the entire game. He was out there to space the floor and he didn't do a good job of it. He missed his first 2 open jumpers and finally connected on his 3rd open jumper attempt. He did score one more basket when he got good position under the basket and received the ball and was able to finish. But 6 of his 8 shot attempts were the floor-spacing variety and he only managed to knock down 1 of those 6 shots. As far as defense goes he did as good a job on Frye as JT did, which means that he stayed close to Frye and kept him from doing any damage. Any time that Plumlee got the switched on to him, Plumlee took advantage by either drawing the foul or getting a good shot at the rim. The primary reason for the minus on the grade is due to his rebounding. He is listed as having 3 rebounds in 25 minutes. Two of them offensive rebounds and 1 defense rebound. Well the 1st offensive rebound came in the first 30 seconds he was on the court. The defensive rebound happened with about a half second left in the game when the ball bounced to him on the Suns last attempt of the game. So essentially in 25 minutes he was able to secure 1 offensive rebounds and no defensive rebounds. In fact, during the stretch that he and Hayes were on the floor together, the Kings got destroyed on the glass. The Suns scored a huge chunk of their points off of offensive rebounds. So he didn't do a good job stretching the floor by making shots and he was invisible on the boards. He ended up playing 25 minutes tonight, but I have no idea why. He just wasn't getting anything done out there tonight. --Uncia

Salmons ( C ) -- All told, Salmons may have been a fish out there, but he wasn't quite a stinky fish tonight. His shooting was bad - he hit two threes (one as the clock was running out) but he missed all five of his two-point shots, one of which came in the fourth on a late-clock drive when he really should have settled for the three. Another was on a fast break, where he went 1-on-3 and came up really short on an ill-advised layup. But he was doing a decent job moving the ball when he was touching it (which wasn't overmuch), including giving Cousins one of the deepest post feeds he's gotten this year (DMC was hacked for FTs, the Suns had no chance to do anything else) and a good-enough alley-oop pass to BenMac on an inbounds - Ben had to contort to catch and lay it in, but it was still two points. Defensively, Salmons wasn't a disaster - when he first came in the game Marcus Morris went straight at him for a jumper, but then went quiet. Morris should, in principle, be able to post Salmons up all day long, but after getting called for a travel trying to back John down he really didn't go back to the post at all, at least while John was on him. Salmons came up with a steal that he wasn't credited for and another loose ball, and hustled for 6 boards on the night. If he played like this every night, we'd cut him a little slack. --Capt.

Fredette ( B- ) -- Tonight was a very successful night for Jimmer. In a wonderful change his defense actually seemed good. He mostly stayed in front of his man, switched on screens and even stole a ball and finished the layup. Both of his three point shots went in. Zero turnovers while he was dribbling around? Yes please, we will take more of that Jimmer! The two assists were also nicely executed (they cheated him out of a third). Most of all you could tell he wanted to be out there in comparison to Thornton. Maybe that will be enough to convince Malone to continue to give him minutes, maybe not. I am anxious to see how it turns out though. --Spud

Hayes ( C- ) -- you know, I just don't get latter day Chuck Hayes sometimes. He's a 6'6" tree stump, he should by all rights survive in the league by playing something like Reggie Evans or old Danny Fortson. Be like Cuz tonight, make it into a physical war. Just makes sense -- if you are built like a football player, then there is your advantage against all the skinny little gazelles. Knock them on their scrawny little butts, and don't apologize. And every once in a while we will see just a bit of that. He'll make a stout defensive stand bracing in the post or some such. But there are just so many nights like these which are just a mystery. Was having to contend with the much bigger Len, but I'm not sure contending is even the word, since he barely touched him physically, and its like he wasn't even looking to rebound. He's 6'6" with arms short enough he probably has to ask for help tucking in his jersey, and he's just standing out there in space watching the tall guys play handball with the ball off the glass. There are reasons he's averaging fewer boards per minute than PPat this year. Heck, noted weenie shooting guard Dionte Christmas is on the Suns, and he averages more boards/min too. About the only thing he was doing was setting good screens until near the end of his stint when he finally made a good play, poking a ball away for a steal and throwing it ahead to IT for the layup. Got a little bucket near the end of his stint courtesy of Jimmer. Notable because that's only his 4th bucket (in 16 tries) all season. --Brick

Outlaw ( C ) -- Outlaw made a token appearance in the first half (he played the final minute-twenty at PF) and I figured he was on his way to an INC, until Malone decided to go with the two-SF lineup for almost the entire fourth quarter to match up with a smaller Suns team. Outlaw nailed two shots in a row early in the fourth when the game was looking locked up, but then the Kings started to go to the same set every single time (an IT-PP high pick and roll) which left Outlaw kinda lonely in the corner for the best part of the quarter. He was quiet on D, getting one steal on a deflection (good) and fouling Dragic after the Suns PG got the switch and got Outlaw to leave his feet (bad), but for the most part the Suns weren't going after him. I suppose he played enough to get a grade, but he just didn't stand out like he did last night.--Capt.

Luc is a difference maker.
Outlaw has earned the right to play every single one of Salmons minutes
Outlaw's earned the right to play every minute Malone gave Salmons, and many of the minutes that Smart would have given Salmons.

I emphasize many... Nobody but Cousins should be playing that many minutes...

Too bad lottery teams don't have playoffs between them.

We'd pound Pho.
Like the consolation bracket in fantasy hoops... Now there's an idea to get rid of tanking: push back the real playoffs by a week, and put the 14 teams that don't make the playoffs into a consolation bracket... winner gets the #1 pick!

Been suggested actually semi-seriously. Might be one of Bill Simmons's half baked ideas. the problem of course is that it would tend to award the #1 picks to the 14th worst team in the league rather than the worst.

Yeah... I don't particularly consider that a problem. Especially if you make the consolation bracket single-elimination. First, you have every team playing hard every night. And, second, GM's would have to be aggressive about improving their team, at all times, and not hoping for a lottery to bail them the **** out.

And third, teams that aren't quite good enough, but fight and claw and scratch and hustle and try every night, should be rewarded for playing hard throughout the season. IMO, the team that finishes at .500, but misses out on the playoffs because they play in the division from hell deserves the #1 pick way more than the team that says, "**** it, let's play the odds, and hope for the best!"

That may be, in fact I think it would be fun, but in the NBA of all leagues those top picks are absolutely critical in turning things around. Any plan which shifts them away from the worst teams threatens to short circuit the entire rebuild/rebirth dynamic, and create a permanent underclass of teams that just never get better.

Could be... Could also be that it would force GM's to get off their asses and beg, borrow and deal to make their teams competitive. I don't know, I might be willing to have a "permanent underclass" to see that happen.

I do have sneaking suspicion, however, that it wouldn't work in practice without a hard cap.

I can think of a few such teams under the current system :p We are arguably one of them.

On a more serious note though, Thornton really is like a black hole. I feel like the the team cohesiveness / energy goes down when he's on the court. He just sucks and needs to be traded.

Sitting 5 rows up in a great corner location we got chance to see real team ball closeup. From the gitgo starters were serious on both ends, did a lot of help defense and ball movement on offense. CruzDame said it was the best away game she has seen in person in 8-9 years. For three quarters the Kings did their thing at both ends. The Suns were going to capitalize the saying, " Live by the 3, die by the 3" and just couldn't figure out the Kings tonight. Somebody mentioned MT. Whose that? hmmm....... We kept saying "the're actually playing team defense" over and over and they did and it got them a road win. A team win for sure.

Not to mention it might give birth to an even worse form of tanking... If you were a fringe 8th seed team in the west with 40-50 wins, it might be tempting to miss the playoffs on purpose in an attempt to get the next Lebron.

Great win

#Luke Richard is a super smart player his off the ball cuts are unreal and he can actually finish, smart tough cookie this one.
#We need an Isaiah Thomas 6th man of the year thread going I might get it up
#Jimmer/Ben Mac both impressed me, bye bye eMTpty
#Cousins great job fighting through injury was impressed how hard he battled on the glass and the free throw attempts but two words shot selection, Also made like 5-6 crazy passes when no one cutting when he was getting doubled which was super impressive
#Outlaw should be playing way more
#First time Patterson and JT played well at the same time, JT has to let that mid range jumper fly he's money when he just does not think about it
#Vasquez defence seriously is just really bad

Back to the game ........ Guys played pretty darn well across the board. PGs did very well, SGs did well, held their own, Luc exceeded my expectations, PFs both contributed, Cousins was great and the team allowed him to play minimal minutes and see a win. Great game and great timing for this AND last night's wins. It will be a tough pair of games in LA.

Clippers could be exhausted they have had a brutal schedule and Lakers are similar to Suns in terms of the way they play without a Dragic but bigger inside both tough I agree but there is a glimmer. The other thing about the Clippers as well is they tend to play down to there opposition.

Go for it! I want to see post-game footage of Blake Griffin, in the Clippers' locker room, with a "Wha happened?" look on his face, like KG had, muttering something about, "That wasn't the team we saw two weeks ago..."

It shouldn't include all 14 non-playoff teams. Just the bottom 8. It's an even number for bracketing purposes and you don't have the issue of a team that just barely missed the playoffs (Orlando in 1993) getting into the mix.

The major difference between Phoenix and Sac is Cousins. I don't just mean as a size matchup, but as a premier talent the type of which Phoenix just doesn't have. I know they're missing Bledsoe, but Bledsoe is Isaiah Thomas level talent. A good guy to have and a potential 6th man stud. I feel Hornacek is doing a good job coaching for them, and even though he is stuck in tanksville, I do love seeing his expressions on the sideline.

I hope Cousins' shoulder is better by Saturday. I felt he's had trouble finishing inside since the injury and that will be even tougher to do against the Clippers.

Love me some IT but Bledsoe is a beast. Even if we discount the hot start his defense is seriously first team level stuff, you know if the league gave a crap about handing out those honors based on merit. He got that mini Artest label for a reason.
