Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Found a cure for our fourth quarter woes -- just go find a 10-26 team to play and watch them do the same things you normally do (miss FTs, turn it over, not rebound), only even worse.

Tonight's (well actually this morning's) theme: Stylish Directors (you know, the ones where you can sit down to watch something and immediately know who directed it without even having to look at the credits).

Cisco ( B+ ) -- in the early going was getting lit up by Gay on one end, and on the other the bulk of his contributions were a pair of wide open feet set three pointers (i.e. the ones you actually want him taking). Was not terrible, but it was a one-sided affair. But stepped up with solid contributions in the third, and was smoothly stroking midrange jumpers by the 4th as many of the rest of the guys had started to struggle. And then of course the story of his game will be stepping up to hit the clutch three to win the game in the final seconds obviously (on yet another feed from Salmons). Gay continued his onslaught throughout, and that holds down this grade a bit, but this likely wouldn't have been an "A" type grade anyway -- of the four 20pt scorers tonight, Cisco was the likely the least, and played the simplest game (amazingly an in control midrange jumper game). But we needed every point from every one of the guys.
220px-Quentin_Tarantino.jpg

Quentin Tarantino -- lead off with the perfectly obivous one. An infantile film geek, and proud of it. Numerous people have tried to imitate Tarantino, but only his BFF Robert Rodriguez has really come close. Brilliant, vile and foul mouthed dialogue, over the top stylized violence, scads of references to the 70's, strippers, hookers, and psychos...its a strange strange world he lives in. And he has his own bevy of recurring actors/actresses, and just about anybody who reeks of vintage cheese or raunch can pop up. As an aside I don't actually think he consistently makes very good movies, just because he's such an egomaniac that he can't be bothered pandering to an audience and is mostly out just to have fun and geek out. But its always entertaining.

Moore ( C ) -- we only played 5 tonight, and we won with 4. That 5th guy was Mikki, who ate nearly as many minutes as the four guys playing big, but was just a teensy weensy bit less effective. Gave us an empty first half making minimal contributions in any area. Was better after the half, but still on a low level. Did come up with a nice little layup late off of a Brad feed -- funny how much easier it is for him to lay it in at 7'0" than for KT for instance at a mere 6'7". Fouled out a few moments later however, and we had nobody who Reggie wanted to play to put in in place of him. Reggie fundamentally does not trust the kids or KT + like most coaches had grown very attached to his vets.
250px-SergioLeone2.jpg

Sergio Leone -- the master of the spaghetti western, which was always a style you could see coming a mile away Eastwood or no Eastwood. Strange sound effects, reused time and time again throughout the era, oiled down heroes and villains, many of them stock actors who were used repeatedly, grainy films, extreme moral ambiguity (to say the least), it was always an icky dirty genre.

Miller ( B+ ) -- tough one to grade. Shot a lot, missed a lot, and the most spectacular number from his game might have been 12-12 from the FT line, a number you don't see out of a center and one without which we go ahead and lose the game. And yet did a lot of little things, and a few big ones, that added up to more of a game than a 5-16 shooting night would have augered. Got points and assists in the early going, but inefficently. Passed very well, but was considerably bothered by the long Grizzlies frontline inside and threw up some awkward clunks. Responded however with a pair of his newfound thunderhick dunks, one in the first half, one in the second. And the one in the second half even coming in traffic and having Brad hopping around and yelling about what a badass he was. Was considerably involved in play late, hitting Mikki for a layup wiht a couple of minutes to go, grabbing a key defensive rebound, hitting a pair of FTs to keep the lead at three going into the final 2 second heave by the Grizz, and then being the guy to pick off the desperation halfcourt pass from Gasol as they looked for a miracle. Wasn't always pretty, but then again sometimes it was. And along the way 22pts 10rebs 5ast.
200px-Tim_burton.jpg

Tim Burton -- the relentless blue palette, the same actors again and again and again (Johnny Depp and Helenna Bonham Carter in partricular), the dark and bizarre worlds....I have long ago grown tired of it all frankly (I will admit to liking the first Batman somewhat, and Sleepy Hollow). But still the movies keep on coming.

Salmons ( A+ ) -- whoa ho! And out comes the vaunted "+", not only for the game (28pts 11rebs 7ast!), but for the circumstances (suffering from the flu). Off to the hot and easy start, just too quick for Miller, and while Beno had the one hot streak, it was really John who was the consistent engine through the half. And not only scored, but created shots for teammates as well -- an oft discussed flaw in his game -- and was on the defensive glass. Really stepped up in the mid 4th with us threatening to get blown off our home court by Memphis, of all teams. But John went on a streak where he just stubbornly attacked attacked and attacked some more, and on one ridiculous play in particular missed a shot and then waded inside amongst the trees to grab two offensive rebounds and finish with the +1 to draw us back wihtin 7 after we had slid back 10. Nor was he done yet -- he missed two threes in the final minutes that should have finished us if the Grizz were comeptent (which they're not), but grabbed the offensive board on one and finished, and came back down to be the assistman who set Cisco up for the winning three (after it looked like he was going to lose the ball). The opponent here was miserable, but this was a monster game for John and he carried us in all the ways an A+ type superstar is supposed to carry you. Scored, but more importantly than scoring, which is overrated sometimes, he did all the other things. He hit the glass in a major way, he stepped up at critical moments, he created shots, included THE shot. Just did it all and carried us uuntil the Grizzlies finally just handed over the keys at the last moment.
220px-Terry_Gilliam_KVIFF.jpg

Terry Gilliam -- its funny how well known this director is despite his relative lack of credits. Of course it helps to get your start with the Monty Python gang. In any case, more bizarre worlds, often almost hallucinatory, constant plays on the nature of reality/sanity, dark and twisted surrealistic scenery, bizarre combinations of the modern and the antique. I have largely detested his work ever since he left Python, with the one huge exception of Twelve Monkeys, which was just brilliant (once you got past a couple of classic Gilliam moments).

Udrih ( A- ) -- good scoring start, and went on one of those patented hot streaks there in the late first and early second where he just decided to be the best player on the floor for 4 or 5 minutes. Was finishing at the rim in
spite of the shotblockers, popping open for short jumeprs, and generally carrying us. Came up with another little burst in the late 4th when it looked like it might be time to stick a fork into us, and in general much more solid play down the stretch this time -- of course not exactly facing a group of late game pit dogs this time out either. As per usual with Beno, it was about his scoring more than his passing, but really tagteamed with John for most of the night to let us keep pace with the Grizz.
225px-Joss_Whedon_premiere.jpg

Joss Whedon -- and the only one on this list who is more famous for his small screen work than his big screen stuff. Whedon of course is the guy who created Buffy, as well as Angel, Firefly, the Firefly spinoff movie Serenity etc. And perhaps befitting his small screen core, you will find less of distinctive imagery or palette in his work than you will of distinctive dialogue and characters. He loves to bend genres, the dialogue is wickedly smart and funny and peppered with all kinds of references and generally unmistakable, the unique characters taking full advantage of the scifi and fantasy settings, and often there are broad metaphors running throughout. Also, watch out for the cute little chick -- she can probably kick your ***.

Jones ( C- ) -- got into quick foul trouble, and maybe trying to prove something too hard to his former team. Dahntay is always physical, but this time out was overphysical (and also got nicked by a couple of shaky calls). Fouled out in record time -- barely making it into the 4th quarter after 9 minutes of action.
244.m.night.shyamalan.100606.jpg

M. Night Shyamalan -- few director's stars have fallen so far so fast as this man's, and it is as much because of his unique style as anything else (well that and making a movie in which we are invaded by space aliens who can be defeated by a garden hose). The movie that burst him onto the scene of course was The Sixth Sense. But what seemed mind blowing and brilliant at the time -- the trick ending, quickly spiraled out of control into nothing more than a cheap gimick in his later flicks. That is not all there is to his style of course -- there is a slow, quiet, brooding feel to almsot all of his flicks. Little music is used, and frankly often not much happens. It can work for eerie. It can also work for boring, and one often gets the feeling of a remarkably empty two hours when watching a later M. Night movie.

Hawes ( C- ) -- struggled in his first half stint, picking up fouls, missing tips. Hit another jumper from the side, and eventually got himself a block. Still not a confidence builder, and when Mikki fouled out late I don't think Reggie even glanced in Spenser's direction before going with Douby.
220px-Martin_Scorsese_by_David_Shankbone.jpg

Martin Scorcese -- the mob, violent sleazy Italian guys, I have never understood the fascination. but fascination there is, and Scorcese is one of the masters of the breed. I think this deep into the lsit you could watch a Scorcese film and not 100% know it was him as its the common plots and themes that make his work unique, not necessarily visuals. But you always know you are in his world, even if you are not sure it is him.

Douby ( B- ) -- quiet in the first half, but hit one of those floaters. And came back at the end of the third to close the quarter with a running hook type thing. Ugly shots, but the ones that show his scoring chops. He and Jones were sloppy to start the 4th though, and Beno was quickly back in to run the team. Would have been it for Quincy (he was removed a few minutes later) except that Mikki fouled out in the final minutes, and with Danhtay already fouled out himself, Reggie simply had nobody else on thebench he remotely trusted and so turned to a scrawny 2nd year OG to replace our PF. Douby made the move look bright though, coming up with another one of the fugly little running hook things, over Gasol I believe, down the right baseline at about the 20 second mark. He has that shot, but taking it then, over a seven footer...good thing it went in or you might have seen Reggie doing the reverse Sprewell on him on the sideline. Modest game for Quincy, but gets bonus points for the timing of his contributions.
220px-Kevsmith.jpg

Kevin Smith -- I feel sorry for Kevin Smith, trapped as he has been for his entire flimaking career in New Jersey. His "View Askewniverse" is almost less style, than world apart. Featuring common themes, a recurring set of actors, including Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and all the low class suburban mall ennui you can shake a stick at.

Willaims ( INC ) -- REALLY Inc. A 20 second second half cameo before Reggie abruptly changed his mind and went with jones. Thought Reg had moved beyond that.

Theus ( ) --

placeholder 1

yes but those 10-26 teams will have a last laugh coming June:o

Meh, the draft should be deep enough. Plus all the top picks (besides Beasley/Jordan) seem to be SG/SF/PGs.

it can be deepest ever and yet the difference between 1-3 picks vs 10--13 pick will be huge

Fantastic game for the Kings. I can't believe I'm hearing this "woss" s***. We're down 3 starters and Memphis has really talented players (on paper at least). Give that line-up to Reggie and I think he'd have a playoff team. We won because we did almost everything right for once in the 4th. Memphis shot over 50%, had more free throws and was 46% from 3. With those stats they would have beat a lot of better teams in the league.

Shoot a solid 48%, out-rebound your opponent by 9, and limit yourself to 12 turnovers. You do that every night and you're at San Antonio level.

And for the love of god. Brad Miller posterized Darko and Pau. I knew Darko fails miserably, but that's just lazy.

I don't know about you guys but i'm gonna ride this win as much as I can.

Great win Kings!
I don't care how these pessimistic fans talking about "woss".
Were already down with possibly our 3 best starters, and yet! )(Q$)*Q)W(*$E_)Q*$Q#W())(&**)&QE$()*)(

I don't care how these pessimistic fans talking about "woss".

- The Kings aren't winning a championship this year.

- The Kings are still in the evolutionary phase of a team for whom a first round exit would be a sign of stagnation rather than progress.

- For those two reasons, I see absolutely zero benefit in a playoff appearance.

- Since I see no reason to strive for games beyond April, I'm not of the opinion that whoopin' on a 10-26 team that will be with us in the lottery fight is necessarily in the team's best long term interest.

- Hence, last night's game is definitely in the "woss" column for me.

Buck up, though. You'll notice that at no point in this or any other post have I suggested/required that you or anyone else see things the same way I do. You're welcome to celebrate as you see fit.

Miller gets and A for sure in this one and Cisco is right up there too. Heck, when was the last time 4 Kings scored 20+, shot 89% FT and had only 2 TO's in the 4th?

Beno owned their guards, Salmons did what ever he wanted, and Mikki out-rebounded Pau Gasol, Gay AND Darko, two 7 footers!!!

Only one TO each for Brad, Cisco and Mikki is fantastic!!!!

But Jones gets a D for 6 fouls in 10 minutes and really pi_ _ing off the coach. I guess his show off vs his old team was bit too emotional.

When they can get Hawes to rebound more ...........................

That kind of finish against a team that led from the early 2nd until 7.9 seconds left shows the Kings what they can do when they set their mind to it.

Excellent post. Couldn't agree more.

I had a lot of fun at the game. I was happy, in the moment, for the win. On the other hand, I don't believe we make the playoffs and I do know that getting as high a lottery pick as possible would be in the best, long-term interest of this team. *sigh* Its a very schizophrenic year for me as a fan. My head and my heart are fighting all the time. I enjoy wins, but I know, come April, I won't be happy with another middling draft pick.

That separation/detatchment has started to become easier for me the last couple of seasons just due to the reality of the Kings' situation, but has been a lot easier this season due to the fact that I can't really watch any of the games. My whole season has been based on numbers, which, win or lose, just don't quite hold the romance or sentimentality as watching the team play.

But I can totally relate to that schizophrenic feeling (which is actually a large part of the reason I'm so amused/confused by the posts asserting that I would discourage other people here for celebrating a win or a fun game... but I digress). Watching the team lose, especially in person (so I've heard ;) ), just isn't very fun.

I think if you're a fan who can't help but want the team to win while watching, one should try to adopt the mentality that the players or coach would have in this situation. They try to win the games and give full effort to do so. But maybe the coach gives extra minutes to younger guys and see if they develop. They don't worry too much about what management is doing or whether the team is in line for a high draft pick or one in the middle. They just play hard every night because the game is meant to be played that way.

You can (if you want) do that as a fan. Root hard every night and enjoy the effort and the wins when they come. Maybe you root for the young guys a little more and get a sense for how much you like them. You don't worry too much about what management is doing (at least while watching the games). You just enjoy watching the team and let the chips fall where they may.

I don't see anything wrong with a compromise of wanting a high draft pick but still rooting for and enjoying the team in the moment, if that's what you are inclined to do.

Welcome to my world.

I do enjoy the wins when I'm watching them. This year, though, I don't get upset over losses, at all. (Well maybe for a moment.;))

I think you are right about the lineup thing. If we were to lineup the players on both teams, and play an old fasion game of "pick'em" where we coudl take 9 rotation players we would have one hell of a team, probably a contender.

Think about what Reggie could do with...
Brad Miller, Gasol, Gay, Artest, Bibby, Martin, Salmons, Beno, Mike Miller.

groundhog day for me or just "another day in the office"

As your neighbor on the rainy north coast, I'm in much the same position; I haven't been making an effort to watch many of the games this year. It does make it easier to resolve the emotional conflict. For much of last year, I felt like I'd agreed to accompany a friend as they competed in a series of pie eating contests, despite their being 400 pounds and diabetic. Whatever the outcome was, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Just reading the numbers, this year, makes it a lot less traumatic.

Given that a win hurts us, would you have preferred a loss while you were at the game spending all that money?
