Given the injury filled year Gilbert Arenas has just suffered, do you think he will still opt out of his contract to hope for a larger extension this summer? I expect him no to terminate his option and resign one more year with the Wizards. If so, how about a straight swap, Gilbert Arenas for Brad Miller.
Trade:
Kings Out:
Brad Miller
Kings In:
Gilbert Arenas
Wizards Out:
Gilbert Arenas
Wizards In:
Brad Miller
Why the Kings do this: At the end of the season, every point guard on the Kings becomes a free agent. We all hope and expect Beno to be signed for the midlevel or so, but he is eligible to sign anywhere and he has played well enough to garner offers for more than we can offer. Gilbert Arenas is a better player than Beno, though not as pure a passer. If we could make this trade, and resign Beno, we would be set at PG for a while.
Gilbert would give us another deep threat, and think how lethal a back court of Gilbert Arenas and Kevin Martin would be. Plus, Gilbert would be the markee type player that the team would need to compete if Ron opts out.
Why the Kings don't do this: Gilbert would only be signed through one season, and would not retain bird rights if traded, so we could lose him for nothing after one year. The Kings could also hope to develop Beno as the primary PG of the future for much less $. Plus everyone knows DON'T TRADE BIG FOR SMALL!!!
Why the Wizards do this: They are always a big man away from competing for the eastern conference title. Brad fits perfectly into Eddie Jordan's system of princeton style motion offense, and his defense and rebounding has seriously improved (Imagine him playing the weak east bigs). If Gilbert doesn't opt out this summer, the Wizards might also not have the money to sign him to a longer extension after that season, so this way they would at least be getting something promising for him. Besides, thereare plenty of PGs in the draft this year.
Why the Wizards don't do this: Gilbert Arenas is an all star player, and with the new rule changes favoring guards, he makes that team lethel. They would miss his scoring and leadership, but they actually have been playing great without him too. I think this is a bigger bargain for them than they realize.
Kings New Roster (Signing Beno)
PG Gilbert Arenas/Beno Udrich/Quincy Douby or Francisco Garcia
SG Kevin Martin/Francisco Garcia or John Salmons/Quincy Douby
SF Ron Artest/John Salmons or Francisco Garcia
PF Mikki Moore/Sheldon Williams
C Spencer Hawes/Shareef Abdur-Rahim or Mikki Moore
Maybe we would then draft Roy Hibbert to play C behind Spencer and Mikki??
