If their punishment serves to prevent someone else from making the same mistake, it could possibly save lives. I don't see what's ambiguous about that statement.
That's reaching. If the current DUI laws and their associated penalties and repercussions aren't enough to prevent someone from drinking and driving, then that a team fired their coach for doing it certainly won't prevent them from doing it either. People react less to things that effect other people than they do to things that effect them directly.

So are you saying that one person's punishment absolutely will not deter someone else from engaging in that same behavior? I mean, obviously it doesn't deter everyone, otherwise no one would break the law. But I'm sure it deters some.
