Tex Winter Assistant Coach

md_7370056_Tex_Winter.jpg

I got Sloan for defense and need an assistant for Offense. Well Tex of course the creator of "The Triangle Offense."

VF for the trillionth time, thank you for being my co-commish on this one.

The double clock has made this go pretty quick and having a second hand to help out with me has made this go much smoother than it would be by my lonesome.
:)

And, Geraldwallace#3 the pick would have been DQ'ed even without someone calling you out on it as the rules say ONLY players who have spent time in the NBA

I am sooooooooooo glad you're here! ;) I have some searching to do. I had a player in line and then realized I don't have an assistant coach. This could be very enlightening for some of the younger members of the board as it might be someone who coached some 30-40 years ago.

:p

As my final pick, I pay tribute to one of the men who made it possible for us to be Sacramento Kings fans...

Assistant Coach - Lester Harrison

LesHarrisonRochester.jpg

This man, may he rest in peace, was the head coach of the 1950-1951 Rochester Royals. It was the only time the franchise won a title and, for that reason alone, he deserves a spot on the bench on my dream team.

Lester "Les" Harrison (August 20, 1904 - December 23, 1997) was an American professional basketball player, coach, and owner and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Upon his graduation from East High School in Rochester, New York, in 1923, Harrison began playing, coaching, and organizing semi-professional basketball, working for the Rochester Seagrams and later the Rochester Ebers.

In 1945, with his brother Jack Harrison founded his own semi-pro team, the Rochester Pros; in 1946, the franchise changed its name to Rochester Royals and began play in the National Basketball League (NBL). Harrison coached the NBL iteration of his team for three years, leading the Royals to three straight NBL finals (of which the team won one, over the Sheboygan Redskins in 1946) and amassing a record of 99 wins and 43 losses. In 1946, Harrison, as team owner, signed Long Island University standout Dolly King; King became the first African-American to have played in the league since 1943 and the first to see substantial playing time for his team.

After the 1947-48 season, Harrison moved his team to the Basketball Association of America (BAA), and, after his team spent one year in the BAA, served on the committee that brokered the merger of the BAA and NBL and produced the National Basketball Association, the extant North American major professional basketball league.

Harrison coached the Royals through the 1954-55 season and retired having led his team to five NBA divisional titles and the 1951 NBA championship. He remained owner of the Royals for three more years, relocating the team to Cincinnati, Ohio (the team currently exists in Sacramento, California, as the Kings), prior to the 1957 season and selling in 1958.

In view of his having been a member of the boards of directors of the NBL, BAA, and NBA, having helped broker the merger of the NBL and BAA, and having been a proponent of the introduction of the 24-second shot clock, Harrison was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1980; in 1990 he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

What the...I was all ready to make a pick. Then noticed this guy hasn't been taken. On KINGSfans.com......again I say what the...

Mike Bibby - PG

Was his birthday the day before last....so happy birthday Mike. Wow, I can't believe how old he is now. Fresh off a pretty good season with ATL, Bibby will be ready to be my backup playmaker behind Paul. I'm gonna want early-to-mid 2000s Bibby though. A bit quicker, a bit tougher, and a bit more clutch than he is today.

A multiple All-star snub, Bibby's best all-around season was 2004-05 when he averaged 19.6 PPG, 4,2 RPG, 6.8 APG, and 1.5 SPG on 44 FG%, 36 3P%, and 78 FT%. His only NBA accolade is being selected to the 1998-99 All-Rookie First team.

Well, outside of my preference for backups who are backups, I was kind of planning on my team stopping my opponents from scoring occasionally, so... ;)

But it is a good pick for the clutch shooting if nothing else. There might only be 10 minutes available for him behind Paul, but he could be there at the end of games.

To finish off my roster I'm going to go with another guard...Even though he is my last pick it doesn't mean he is last off the bench.

act_jason_richardson.jpg

Jason Richardson

Best Season 05/06

23.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.3 spg

When he gets hot he is pretty much unstoppable and I like unstoppable so I'm adding him to my roster! :)

Sorry for being away. Hope I didn't hold up the draft.

My pick for Head Coach:

KC Jones

Coached the Bullets, Sonics and of course, the Celtics. In 5 seasons coaching the Celtics he won 2 Titles, lost twice in the NBA finals, and lost once in the Eastern Conference finals.
A career coaching record of 522-252 with a winning percentage of .674, yeah that works.

For my assistant I'll take a guy who has 3 times been named the NBA's top assistant by GM's (2002, 2004, 2007). Those who know there Kings history will certainly be familiar with...

Phil Johnson

There are some guys that are meant to be Head Coaches and there are some guys that are meant to be assistants. I believe Phil is one of the latter. Granted he won coach of the year one year but it seems he has really found his niche as a premier assistant in the league.

I just tried to update but went over the 12000 letter limit.

I sent VF a PM, but if any mod sees this could you break the draft boards into 4 different posts?

give me....

Matt Harpring - G/F

Maybe the opposite of Mike Bibby here... I needed a tough-minded, defensive forward to round out my roster. Plus, he's a pretty good shooter which is a requirement on my team with The Dream in the middle. Sure, he can be a dirty player at times, but maybe every team needs one of those guys.

I briefly considered hhim for my last pick, but was looking for the extra offense at that point. And yes, I considered him precisely because he is tough bordering on dirty. Soft little nice guys normally finish last in pro sports.

With a pretty young John Kundla at head coach, I need a wise, experienced assistant coach that will be able to do what Kundla is not able to do. I am taking as my assistant coach:

Bill Fitch

bill-fitch.jpg

Fitch is fifth in all time victories with 944 and in combination with the much younger and extremely intelligent Kundla, my team will achieve greatness. He has been NBA Coach of the Year 2 times and won the 1981 NBA championship.

As a former U.S. Marine Corps official, he will put my team in line and create a strong work ethic for all the players.

DEL HARRIS

Jeff Van Gundy (assistant coach)

Figured I would add a little defense to my defense behind my defensive guru head coach. JVG has had assistant experience too, so not too huge a stretch. Plus gerbilboy is funny looking.

Well, I'm gonna make this a family affair and select Larry's brother (who he's worked with on 3 separate occasions)..

Herb Brown - Assistant Coach

One pick left, and I need an assistant coach. I've got my offensive God in Mike D'Antoni who can massage my superstar egos and create a player friendly high octane offense that will get the fans behind our club. Now I need an assistant that will light a fire under their a$$! This guy is perfect for the job, a former NBA point guard fireball who preaches consistency, effort, and defensive accountability. He will be willing to do the emotional dirty work to make sure my guys are tough as nails, and aren't phased by any of the other teams less skilled enforcer crap. With my 14th choice, I select:

Scott Skiles - Assistant Coach/Defensive Tyrant
skiles.jpg

I love that you can see the spit in this photo:). Scott is the defensive coordinator for my team, and an accountability enforcer. While Mike D'Antoni is being the nice guy and massaging the egos of my players to give them that championship chemistry, Scott is making sure that everyone is putting 100% into practice, preparatory film study, workout regimens, and game time psychological commitment to be fully prepared to play their best each night. He will make my team mentally tough, to be able to grind out victories when necessary, and overcome physical and emotional fatigue. He will make them practice go to moves and plays in the half court if the running game stalls, and he will make their transition and half court defense impenetrable. Every successful team needs a common villain to rally around. Someone that everyone just doesn't like (because they make them work harder than they want to), but they all respect (because he gets more out of them than they could get themselves), and Scott Skiles is the man for the job! Watch out Bricklayer, he's got a bat!

Playing Career

The Milwaukee Bucks made Skiles the 22nd overall selection of the 1986 NBA Draft. In ten seasons, he played for the Bucks (1986–87), Indiana Pacers (1987–89), Orlando Magic (1989–94), Washington Bullets (1994–95), and Philadelphia 76ers (1995–96).

In 1989, Skiles was selected by the newly-formed Orlando Magic in the NBA expansion draft. In that year Skiles would become a pivotal sixth man, and as backup point guard amassed 7.7 points per game, 4.8 assists per game, and twenty-one minutes per game. The following year he would transition to the position of starting point guard.

On December 30, 1990, Skiles racked up 30 assists in Orlando's 155-116 victory over the Denver Nuggets, breaking Kevin Porter's NBA single-game assists record (29). He averaged 17.2 points and 8.4 assists per game that season, doubling his marks from the previous year and earning the NBA Most Improved Player Award.

In 1996, nursing a serious shoulder injury, Skiles left the U.S. for the European league and joined PAOK in Thessaloniki, Greece. At PAOK, expectations were high for the new arrival from the NBA. Midway through the season, however, injuries and contract problems with key players threatened to devolve into a disastrous season for PAOK and French coach Michel Gomez. Still struggling with injury himself, increasingly at odds with his coach, and fighting a custody battle in the U.S. for his children, Scott asked to be released from his contract. Instead, President Lakis Alexopoulos fired Gomez and offered Skiles the job. Despite lacking three of their top players due to injury, Skiles led PAOK to a winning record as coach in the remainder of the '96-'97 season, and an unexpected 3rd place finish in the league tournament.
Coaching Career
The following year Scott Skiles returned to the NBA as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns and was later elevated to head coach (1999). Under Skiles, Phoenix compiled a winning record (.595) and made the playoffs in two of his three years, including a first-round win over the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs in 2000. In 2003, after a two-year absence from the game, Skiles came to the Chicago Bulls as head coach where he focused on improving the young Bulls' defense and developing greater consistency in a talented but underachieving team. In the first full year under his direction, Chicago limited its opposition to an NBA-best .422 field goal percentage and held their opponents to a franchise record and NBA season-high 26 straight games below 100 points. Scott was named NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for January 2005 after guiding the Bulls to an NBA best 13-3 mark in that month.

In 2006, Skiles led his Bulls to a 41-41 record (earning a 7th seed in the playoffs) and faced the Miami Heat (the 2nd seed) in the first round of the playoffs, losing in six games. However, in 2007, Skiles led the Bulls to a 49-33 record, and again faced the Heat, this time sweeping them in four games. However, the Bulls went on to lose the first three games of their second-round series against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, losing Game 3 at the United Center after holding a double-digit lead for much of the game. After winning two consecutive games to stave off elimination, the Pistons finally finished off Skiles and the Bulls in six games.

Scott Skiles was fired from the Bulls on December 24, 2007. At the time, the Bulls were last in the Central Division with a 9-16 record after having high expectations heading into the season. "This was a difficult decision to make, but one that was necessary at this time," Bulls general manager John Paxson said in a press release.

On April 21, 2008, a report surfaced that Skiles has verbally agreed to become the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.

I was going to pick Gundy but I thought it was not allowed since he was a head coach. Plus he never was assistant coach after he became head coach. Same with Skiles.
