Dream Team Draft - rankings due Sunday night

Probably a bit early for Vlade, but he was a great guy. I was probably going to take Webber if he was there with my next pick.:(

Also the double clock is confusing, but it is extremely helpful. This draft has moved fast the past day or two.

Heh -- now you guys are just reaching. It IS a Kings board though. ;) And its not as if one of my contingency plans was not to put Webber next to Bird to create the passing duo.

Re: Webb
Talk to the prime Brick. Talk to the prime.
;)

COMMISSIONER INQUERY:

I've been thinking...To make the draft a little deeper and more 'meaningful.'

A mandatory 15th round (limited to 15th round only) that describes how your team will work together.
How your coaches will coach your team.
How your team will play as a team to play against,

We're in round three, so I don't think this will change any ideas for teams being selected.

---------------------
Feedback as soon as possible because me, the commish, thinks this is a potentially awesome idea to make this draft even deeper than a fantasy draft of all time.

What do you all think?

Well you should list the greatness of your team, while the others list needs of your team.
It is a competition.

You need to think you are the BEST!

As an aside...
15th round descriptive style is maybe still in the air (although I am leaning one way despite audience reception.)
Vote it.

Sorry everyone for holding up the draft. I have a conference I have to be at all week, every day, all day. So please be patient. My picks are coming within the next 15 min.

Kingsnation has a pick following Elgin Baylor --- Made at 11:34 today. I'll time him out at 12midnight.
Kingsnation of course also has the pick following mine.

Im not going to fault him for probably not being able to get to a computer.

The double clock has been confusing, but I won't break the rules because of this odd happening.

Hope this doesn't apply. Pick coming.

Round 2 pick:

Dirk Nowitzki

Perhaps the most successful European in the history of the NBA.

8× NBA All-Star (2002–2009)
3× All-NBA First Team
(2005–2007)
3× All-NBA Second Team
(2002–2003, 2008)
2× All-NBA Third Team
(2001, 2004)
2002 FIBA World Championship MVP
5× Euroscar Award Winner (2002–2006)
EuroBasket 2005 MVP
2005 Mister Europa Player of the Year
2005 FIBA Europe Player of the Year
2006 NBA Three-Point Shootout Winner
2007 NBA Most Valuable Player

With the 3rd pick of the 3rd round, kingsnation selects...

Steve Nash

Was debating whether or not to go C, SF or PG here but I think my choices for C and SF might last until my next pick, so I'm going PG. And with Cousy off the board, I think the next strongest pick is mr. 2 time MVP Steve Nash to dish 15 dimes a game to MJ and Dirk.

2× NBA Most Valuable Player
(2005–2006)
6× NBA All-Star
(2002–2003, 2005–2008)
3× All-NBA First Team
(2005–2007)
All-NBA Second Team
(2008)
2× All-NBA Third Team
(2002–2003)
J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award
(2007)
Lou Marsh Trophy Winner
(2005)
2× Lionel Conacher Award
(2005–2006)

Slab, I hate you. I was so close to having Webber as my pick. He almost fell.

Well, this was a struggle between two players. Ultimately I decided to go big since I've got no big man yet. People have slept on a guy, though, and I don't expect him to fall much further.

Anyway, my pick:

nba_g_mutumbo_268.jpg

Dikembe Mutumbo
I'm going with size and intimidation at the 5 spot. His career averages aren't as good as they could be due to his longevity. But, make no mistake about it, Mutumbo was a beast. In his rookie season he averaged 16.6ppg, 12.3rpg, 3bpg, and 2.2apg.

In seperate seasons he averaged 4.5 blocks per, and 14 rebounds per. I'll happily let anyone drive towards Mutumbo in his prime.

Some achievements:

8 Time All-Star
4 Time Defensive Player of the Year
Lead the League in blocks 3 years straight
2nd all-time leader in blocks

I'll put up more later when I have the time.
I'll happily let him anchor my middle. You can't teach height. With my C and PG averaging somewhere around 6'10'', I've got ridiculous size.

Hmm..it looks like myself and Jespher are on the clock.

Sooo many ways to go here. I've been back n forth 100 times on this pick, but I've finally settled on the Iceman Chuck Li- I mean George Gervin

gervin.jpg

One of the 50 greatest players in NBA history, Gervin was the first great scoring guard before someone called Michael Jordan came along (I know, I've never heard of that guy either). With Kareem and Gervin forming a great inside-outside duo, Kidd should easily get 15 assists per game. He wasn't heavily recognized for his defense, but according to Wiki, Gervin retired with the 2nd most blocks of any guard in history. Also a 9x All-star, making the All NBA 1st team 5 times and the All NBA 2nd team twice. I believe he still holds the record for most points in a quarter with 33 as well

"He's the one player I would pay to see" - Jerry West

"You don't stop George Gervin. You just hope that his arm gets tired after 40 shots. I believe the guy can score when he wants to. I wonder if he gets bored out there." - NBA Coach Dick Motta

Damn you.....I was sure I could get Deke as a late round value. Nice pick.

I need a PG next, and I'll go with a hometown favorite. Mr. versatility, he had no weaknesses as a PG. Played solid defense, great shooter, athletic freak, great playmaker, terrific court vision, and solid on the break. With my third choice, I select:

Kevin Johnson - PG 6'1" 180 LBS.
mcd_open_kjohnson_blockjpg.jpeg

[yt=Kevin Johnson]lhkQFkv-c9M[/yt]
Career Stats 17.9ppg, 9.1 apg, 1.5 spg, 3.3 rpg

Talk about a great running point guard, KJ could do it all. He was athletic enough to throw down ferocious dunks, even at 6'1". He had eagle eyed court vision, finding cutters coming in all directions (4 straight years of 10+ assists), and was deadly in the pick and role as a shooter, a passer, and a driver. He got to the free throw line at will (8.1/game as a PG), and converted a high percentage (84-88%) too. Plus, he didn't turn the ball over, was a dominant rebounding guard, and could create turnovers on par with Gary Payton (2.1 spg)!

Accomplishments:
* Johnson is one of only three players in NBA history (Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson are the others) to average at least 20.0 points and 12.0 assists in a season.
* Johnson is one of only three players in NBA history (Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas are the others) to have averaged at least 20.0 points and 10.0 assists in three consecutive seasons.
* Johnson is one of only four players in NBA history to have averaged at least 20.0 points and 10.0 assists per game in three different seasons.
* Johnson is one of five players to have averaged at least 15.0 points and 10.0 assists per game over the course of a season while shooting at least .500 from the field.
* Johnson is one of only two players (the other is Magic Johnson) to have averaged at least 20.0 points and 10.0 assists per game over the course of a season while shooting at least .500 from the field.
* Johnson is the only player in NBA history to have averaged at least 20.0 points, 10.0 assists, a .500 field goal percentage, and 2.0 steals in a season (in '90-'91).
* On March 7, 2001, the Suns inducted Johnson into their Ring of Honor and retired his uniform number seven during halftime of a game Phoenix played against the Sacramento Kings, Johnson's hometown team.
* NBA record holder for minutes in a finals game, playing 62 minutes in 1993 vs. the Chicago Bulls.
* Three time NBA All-Star.
* Phoenix Suns all time leader in free throws made, free throws attempted, and in assists.

Well I hate to do this in some ways, but you guys are killing me with all the stuff dangling out there and I now have 2/3 of the generally acknowledged best frontcourt of all time:

Mchale_by_lipofsky.jpg

Kevin McHale

Here shooting over probably his only competition for best post player of all time. I didn't want to take two Celtics from the same era, really didn't. And especially not this one -- just so so ugly. But there just comes a point where:

1) postgame = check. Probably the best ever at his position. All those moves that Spencer thinks he has? McHale had them. And how. Hakeem could not stop him. Kareem could not stop him. Basically nobody could stop him. He called the post his "torture box" and not only was he good for 20+ every night, but he did it shooting 60%. And this wasn't a dunker. He shot 60% because nobody could stay with him on his moves.
2) Defense = check. One of the best PF defenders in history, a man to man stopper and major 2+ a game shotblocker with the wingspan of a pterodactyl. 6x on the All Defense first or second team, and only coming off the bench kept it from being more.
3) Mean = check. Just ask Kurt Rambis as soon as he tracks down his decapitated head.
4) Versatile = check. 6'11" 250lbs. PF, C, one of the best 6th men in history (2x 6th man of the year winner) and then as a starter averages a cool 26 and 10 in his best year.
5) Winner = check. 3x NBA Champion. 2x 6th Man of the Year Award Winner. 7x All Star, Hall of Famer, and one of the 50 Greatest.

And so Kevin McHale = check.

Well I'm almost glade you went with McHale Brickie. Do we get to count his exploits as GM as well? :p

As for my pick

drexler13.jpg

Clyde "The Glide" Drexler

Lets take a review of the Mr. Drexler's career. Only averaged 20 7 and 7 for his career. Voted of the 50 greatest players and was on that cute little team the US put together for the 92 Olympics.

Led his team to the finals 3 times, finally breaking through in 1995 as a 6 seed while with the Rockets. Had a little help from a friend there (See: The Dream).

Long, athletic, slasher. Decent shooter later in his career. His athleticism with Barkley and Shaq inside should work nicely.

This is who I was talking about having slipped, but probably wouldn't go any further. I was debating whether to take him or Mutumbo, but ultimately went with Deke as you can't go wrong with one of the best defenders of all time. You've got a vert strong trio of Shaq/Barkley/Drexler. Nice job.
