Draft position thread

Westbrook with the triple double and they actually win! I'm officially jealous we weren't able to get him (not like I wasn't already).

Hey, we are in that perfect position that every team claims it wants to be in -- we hold our fate in our own hands at this point. If we don't finish this season with the league's worst record, we won't have anybody to blame but ourselves. Lose out, and its a lock! :p
 
Yes, but... time to be nervous again.

The Pacers are a much better team than us, which is to say that they're .419 and 6-4 on their last 10... to our .213 and 2-8. HOWEVER, they totally suck on the road... their 7-25 is even more pathetic than our 9-20 home record.

Will this be the woss that gets our last 10 games up to 3-7 for the first time since Jan. 16th? Will Washington be hot on our heels yet again?

May Naismith have mercy upon us.

Its an obvious trap game, especially wiht that 0-for the season against the East thing hanging over us. But we've ran into many a trap game and promptly fallen right on our faces rather than pull them out -- do not depair just yet!

Granger needs to get his *** out there and have himself a game though.

Today we get rewarded for not wosing to the Pacers:

OKC's playing Washington, and Memphis is playing LAC. If only every day could be like this!

I don't dare get my hopes up about a Washington woss, but any 2 wosses will do.

Since we're on target for a 17-woss season, it's looking very unlikely that OKC or Memphis can outstink us. Any team which gets 4 more wosses than us will be removed from future updates.

Forecast for the remainder of the week: 100% certain, back-to-back Washington lins on Friday and Saturday. OKC and Memphis can also be expected to lin on Saturday. Unless LAC accidentally wose to Indiana on Saturday, no good news for us until our lin over Denver on Sunday.

stevenson is out for the season, not sure if arenas will return, butler is day to day. They just got smashed by the spurs. Dare i say they will be our biggest rivels to #1

More than rivals, they are now tied with us, with no likely wosses on the horizon. :( Today's upset woss by OKC was nice, but not nearly enough to make up for our own.

That's all the more reason to want the #1 position (guaranteed top 4). You know when the last time was that there wasn't an All Star going in the top 4? It was when Michael Jordan was an 8th grader (1976). There WILL be an excellent player going in the top 4, but if we don't do things like we should, there may not be any left by our pick.
 
i'd be mad if we didn't get in the top 3. at least if we get top 3 we can select thabeet, another flyer or trade down.

The top 4 that year were Lebron James, Darko, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh... 3 of the top 4 were All Stars. If all GMs were good at evaluating talent, #5 Dwyane Wade would have been in the top 4 and Darko would have come much later. Some GMs aren't, though.

But I didn't say that all top-4 picks every year were All Stars, which they obviously aren't... just that in the top 4 there will be at least one All Star. In the year you mentioned, for example, the top 5 picks were 80% All Stars, the bottom 53 picks were 5.6% All Stars. If you've got a top pick, even in a terrible draft year, you have the opportunity to pick a future AS. Or Geoff can pick the next Darko, if he's that bad at evaluating players.

If you're going on the assumption that Geoff is an idiot who picks players using a dartboard, then you may not care much about where we end up in the draft. Otherwise, you want him to pick first.

Between the 1980-2005 drafts (I didn't go later since the jury's still out on '06-'08), if you had the #1 pick, your chances of getting an All Star with it were 21/26, or 80.8%. Talent was never Darko's problem. It was his attitude and lack of effort that has made him into a scrub. Certainly no lack of talent. I cringed when I read an article in serbian papers where he was blaming his NBA teams for never making him a first option on the offensive end. He wants the offence to go through him :eek:

There is no doubt that Darko has the talent to be an all-star but he lacks the smarts, work ethic and the attitude to get there.

Well, that is part of player evaluation, isn't it? Players who are small, or unathletic, or untalented, can yet be good players if they're willing to work exceptionally hard. And players with great talent can still follow in the footsteps of Darko, Olowokandi and others if they aren't willing to put forth much effort. Attitude is part of the whole package you're drafting.
