Downtown Plaza

I kind of hope there's a rally or something at the downtown plaza before the wrecking balls come in. Not that I don't feel Chavez Park is an appropriate place for this week's rally, but it would be nice for fans (and people in the community) to say goodbye to the old mall and at the same time participate in a groundbreaking of sorts. It's obviously premature for that right now, but hopefully that day won't be far off. Even if the environmental reports will take months, sounds like JMA and the associated developers want to do something different with that space anyway. Hopefully they're already in the process of terminating the few leases that are still there and making plans to do some gutting before the all clears come back. I think they can build the arena in two years (Oct 2014 - Oct 2016) IF they're truly shovel ready in Oct 2014. So whenever the time comes and the east half of the plaza is officially dead and there are arena posters in every empty storefront, it would be cool to have one more big party down there. Like a "the arena is really going to happen this time" party. Until then, let's celebrate the death row pardon of the Kings. Sleep Train is going to seem remarkably less dumpy next season even if they don't put a dime into it.

I don't get around much especially lately. Does anyone have a picture of the area that is going to be replaced? I'd love to se it. Ot give me the addresses so I can look it up on Google Earth. Actually the latter is the best.

I was just down there today for the Pacific Rim Street Festival and for some reason the thought of "I wonder if Glenn and his wife would be interested in something like this." But I never did spot any glowing red eyed pig tailed older gentlemen.

The Google map on the page is the area. I think roughly about the Downtown Plaza. They put up some Kings flags around the plaza and saw a lot of Kings jerseys today, something I haven't seen in awhile.

Hey Glen-

On that map (or google earth, etc.) the stadium is planned to be located between 5th and 7th streets and between L and J streets. Hope that helps.

Edit - I would LOVE to be there. But Thursday is my son's school "open house" and possibly the final minors championship baseball game for him, so I am not going to be able to attend.

Thanks everybody. I already had searched around downtown on Google Earth and this seemed to be the most likely place. I wonder how many downtown areas in other cities have such obvious places to tear down.
