Does Thabeet make sense now?

in response to the original question. Does Thabeet make sense now? Uhm I think Thabeet has always made since then and now.

He really has no future with that franchise, at least not as long as Hollins is there. Hollins didn't like him from Day 1 -- memorably complaining that he didn't have a jump hook, which is just...anyway. You have got the feeling they have butted heads repeatedly since then.

We really should make a run at him.
I have a feeling we could get him for cheap.
We are not winning anything in the next couple seasons, we have no true center and we desperately need defense. What is the hold up?

First off, I'm not surprised. He has a lot to learn and to do that he needs to play. the D league will at least offer him the minutes to improve. I do agree with you though, that if we could get him cheap then I would do it. Their organization will want to try and save face in any trade they make.

Two trades that work with ESPN trade checker:

Kings trade Beno for Thabeet. We not only save money, we save one year of Beno's contract.

Kings trade Nocioni for Thabeet and Arthur. We still save a little money short term and once again save one year off of Nocioni's contract.

I would love to just trade a future first round pick for him but he makes too much money..

I think the hold up would be that the trade deadline has passed. I don't believe two teams can trade again until the season has ended for both those teams. That would mean if we don't make the playoffs and Memphis does, we couldn't trade with them until they're elliminated from the playoffs. I could be wrong about that, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'am..

We'll be under the cap this summer, so it won't matter. Which is why cap space is so helpful even if you don't have a chance at LeBron--you can still do the little deals like this to stockpile talent.

Good point. I'd forgotten about that. I would like to trade somthing for him though to save as much of our cap space as possible for future deals.

I just read a great line from an NBA assistant or scout. He said Thabeet only has to work on two things. His offense and his defense.

Nahh. We should make a run at him when they don't renew his contract after year 3.

We should definately make a run at him, you can't teach height. It was silly of Memphis to draft him, they already had Gasol blossoming. Behind Gasol is Haddidi, he's a serviceable big man as well.

I've never understood after all these years how these NBA teams can have 3-4 big men sitting on a roster and we haven't had a legit NBA center since 2004 Brad Miller.

By then he might have developed into something special, costing us a lot more money. I'd say take a gamble on him now, and who knows, he might turn out decent.

Yeah you never know how a big will be developed until about 3 years. I'm too for taking a gamble on him, only if it doesn't cost us our draft/FA gamble this year.

But I would take a gamble on him over Hawes.

Please don't lay on me as a Kings fan any more "big" projects like Thabeet. Please. Now is the time to pay for a very good veteran, at any position. We sadly, sadly need that. After we have done that them maybe we could consider another "project". Please, pay for a good veteran, and it's all right with me if the second priority is another good or very good veteran. Let's finish the baby sitting jobs we have now on the roster, and there are lots, and then limit it to the usual one or two per season.

Now is precisely the time to take a flier on a big dude. There's no sense to worry about wins and losses. Giving him 15-20 minutes a game to see if something's there will not hurt us this year or next year. When you're competing for a playoff position, you don't want to use those minutes to "see what a kid's got." Ask Gerald Wallace.

Read an article this morning saying that everyone on the Memphis staff wanted to draft Tyreke Evans. Which would have been a popular move considering he played for Memphis in college. The owner overruled them and wanted Thabeet. So against the advice of the their own scouting staff and the GM, they drafted Thabeet. Thank god for small favors. If not for their owners stupidity, we would have had no chance at Evans.

That's been prety well known for a while. Also I think hasn't made the situation there any easier for Thabeet. He was greeted there was something approaching hostility in a turf war between owner and underlings/fans.

I can't think of a worse situation for a player thats definitely a project, than to be taken with the second pick in the draft, and all the expectations that come with it. But to make matters worse, to come into an organization that wanted to draft a player thats probably going to win ROY. Whether intentional or not, there has to be some resentment there. None of this is Thabeets fault. He's truely a victim in this situation. It would be nice if we could rescue him. But only at the right price.

WOW!! That's freaking unbelievable. We hem and haw about the best fit next to Tyreke, but I don't think there's anyone out there right now who fits the bill better than OJ Mayo. Great defender and shooter, good ball handler. That backcourt with the Gasol/Randolph/Gay front line....Conley as a 3rd guard, and a Scott Pollard-type backup big and they'd be legit title contenders.

I doubt it. I still think he's a 5 year project. And what happens a lot with 5 year projects is their team gives up on them before year 5.

A 2nd round draft pick?:D

Those are impressive numbers, and I hope he can build on them. I'll just say this, and leave it alone: There's a world of difference between the NBA and the NBDL, especially when it comes to competent big men. I mean, Jared Reiner isn't exactly on his way to being an All Star, and he's the best big man that Thabeet has faced.

Still, 19/16/6 is a definite head turner.
