Do you think Ricky hurt himself with his workout?

Do you think things would have been different had he chose not to do any kind of workout for the Kings or do you think that wasn't really a factor in the decision?

Tough to tell, but I think it's clear all along (i.e. not a smokescreen) that the FO was lukewarm about him. Whatever happened in that workout it didn't dispel what they already thought about him.

I think its more that Tyreke impressed enough to convince that he was worth a shot at PG and the worst case is that he'd become a star at the 2 spot, whereas worst case with Rubio is he flames out. When we were able to get another PG locked up through Portland it pretty much sealed the deal that they were going with Evans in my mind.

I think Evans really wowed his with his workouts, we were already lukewarm on Rubio, and then the workout (probably especially getting sick for the first one) did not change our minds, or reverse any impression we had that maybe he wasn't ready.

In general I understood Rubio not wanting to workout -- when you are going to be picked high no reason to let the hype bubble get burst by a bad showing. But if he WAS going to workout, given his strengths as a passer/court vision guy I defeinitely would have wanted him to work out 3 on 3 rather than alone. What is a guy who is a passer, but not a shooter, going to do ina solo workout to impress?

I think Rubio's stance of "I will only play in California" makes him look like a prima-donna. Had he been willing to do the workouts and play where he was selected, he could have potentially gone higher. Hard to say. He could have gone lower if he is all hype.

yes it definitely hurt him...

Tyreke Evans started out not wanting to play against anyone and quickly changed his mind when teams probably started to think he was scared. But he said he wouldn't back down from anyone and that he could play against the best of them and sure enough. Evans punished everyone by a BEYOND large margin.

3 on 3 setting wasn't gonna help Rubio show his whole game but at least the team could see his man to man defense against other similar sized guards.

Rubio

Not doing a workout wouldnt have made much of a difference I think, because why would we, a rebuilding team, invest in a product we dont even know much about? I mean, do you all think Petrie and the front office would have drafted rubio solely based on Youtube hilights?????? I think not!

At the end of the day, workout, or no workout, we did the smart thing by passing on Ricky Rubio. I honestly believe us Kings fans will fall in love with Tyreke Evans!

What NBrans said - the team was already lukewarm on Rubio, combined with a 1 on 0 drill, which is useless for a guy like Rubio. The Kings front office is a little jump shot obsessed, and they track made jump shots in workouts and compare them to previous players. We know Rubio isn't a good shooter and he hadn't picked up a basketball in a month, which was a mistake. Laying off for a month affects your ability to make shots, so I'm sure he compared unfavorably with many of the other players who have worked out in the past. I think the Kings had their minds made up about Rubio before Petrie ever went to Spain. Everything after that was evidence to support the decision they had already made.

I think the Maloofs/Petrie/Westphal want this team to become better defensively and more physical for when we return to the playoffs in the future( who knows when that will be). If thats the case, the transformation starts now, or did last year with Noc and JT. When our front office thought about where they want this team to be in 3yrs, having a physical specimen with a very high ceiling like Evans at the point became very attractive. I'm sure they were high on Rubio, but there were too mnay questions surrounding him.

I don't think Rubio hurt himself at all during his workout. I trully believe that Petrie and Westphal think evans will be the 2nd best player in this draft, and they aren't the only ones who felt that way.

I doubt that Rubio's workout had much to do with the Kings decision. Evan's workout may have. I think that everyone just assumed that the Kings would go after Rubio. He was the most hyped pt in the draft. The Kings needed a pt, so it appeared to be a match made in heaven.

Petrie said a couple of times before the draft that the Kings needed to get more athletic, tougher, and better defensively. Apparently no one was listening. They looked a Evans and they looked at Rubio and decided that Evans fit the image better.

I believe the manner in which Rubio and his agent handled all the pre-draft stuff is what influenced Memphis, OKC, and the Kings to go in another direction. Think about it. First, Rubio's agent was sending signals about only wanting to play in particular markets. Secondly, they refused to visit with, let alone workout for most teams in position to draft him. Lastly, once he did agree to a workout with the Kings, he wouldn't allow the Kings personnel to run the workout.

To me, all of that spells out primadonna. And the kid is only 18. It's bound to get worse. Apparently, as far as the T-Wolves are concerned, it has. Word is that he's possibly going to pull the "I'm going to stay in Europe for another year or two" card.

As talented as Rubio might be, I'm glad the Kings went in the direction they did.

Well, if the Kings wanted a tough guy who likes to compete, and he decided he didn't want to compete, yeah, I think it's safe to say that at the very least he didn't help himself.

Not at all. IMO in the last few weeks...Evans was there number one choice. Hell, i heard they might have picked Flynn as the backup plan if Evans was taken first and Both he and Rubio were left on the board.

I think GP knew enough about Rubio from scouts and his own visits to see Rubio. Supposedly Jason Levien has a very good eye for foreign talent, and I'm sure he knew Rubio's abilities pretty well. So I don't think the workouot was a make or break situation.

The Kings did not decide on the format of the workout, not were they allowed to direct it. The workout was run by someone from Rubio's camp. I did read a blurb in the Bee that they were a little turned off by Rubio's "handlers." I'm not so sure Rubio is a prima donna. I'm thinking the problem has a lot more to do with those handlers and the people around him.

I'd say they haven't done the poor kid any favors. That includes his hovering father. Not easy for a kid that age to go against his father's wishes.
