Reports say Dirk is opting out- while it looks like he's still going back to Dallas, it's an interesting possibility.

We could sign him outright, give a max deal. Him and Tyreke would make an interesting inside-outside combo, that kind of double threat would be a nightmare for teams to guard. I think if we added Dirk plus a more dirty-work oriented center this team could be great.

Plus the idea of Dirk and mini-Dirk (Hawes) playing together would be pretty funny.

Way too old.

Its basically impossible anyway since Dirk would never opt out to come to a young team -- he is looking for a title. But if it were possible only way it would make any sense would be in a Celtics scenario. Take Reke, sign Dirk, and trade for a 3rd star, even if older, and try to go chase a title with Reke/Dirk/3rd star + roleplayers for a few years.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think everyone is looking for a title.;)

I know that basically nobody would like the idea of him coming here because of his age and his history of choking in the playoffs. Having said that though, if every other big name FA says "no thank you" to us, but Dirk says "I may be interested," what would be the max that you give him.

He'll be 32 starting this season, and started playing full-time in the NBA around 20 or 21. While he's not a prime player certainly, I think if we added him we could be in contender mode for the next 4 or 5 years, and we would be in a better position to stockpile talent in the interim. I think the last two years are showing us, in terms of lotto position, that we may never get that home run big guy that every team needs to take it to the next level through the draft.

Tyreke would be the best second option Dirk has ever played with. We also have a decent supporting cast and with the no. 5 pick could target a center to play next to him and try to pick up someone else through FA. I know it's unlikely, but if we had the shot I don't think we can say no to bringing him on board.

You dont build a team around your franchise player by adding a 30 year old vet and was the franchise player of another team.... they will just buttheads..

the anti lebron james rule.. build a team around your franchise player with YOUNG talent..... not veterans.... its like fine wine and milk... as the other ages to perfection the other will just screw your bowels :D

Yea I would definitely look at it as an option if this were the case.

Reke/Johnson/Gay/Dirk/Dalembert
Beno/Garcia/Greene/Landry/Thompson/Brockman/Hunter

Sign Dirk for 4 years 10 Mil?
Trade Omri, #33 and Hawes for S&T Gay & Steven Hunter
Aquire Dalembert with Noc,picks,Garcia,Capspace Intake

hmm it dosent seem impossible?

that team looks amazing on paper.

Dallas have tried different things around Dirk. The result, no championship until now.

I don't want us to suffer the same faith as Dallas.

The one benefit from acquiring Dirk that I agree with you is the fun we will have from laughing at our softies Dirk and Hawes playing together. I think we should also try acquiring Frye to complete the cast of 3-point shooting softy BIGS.

Oh wait, we can re-acquire Martin too!:p

dirk doesnt have the heart of a champ.. sacramento doesnt want him...

Your not serious are you? What the hell are you basing this comment on. The fact that he never won a championship? If so then I guess John Stockton and Karl Malone don't have the heart of a champion either. How about Charles Barkley? Thank god Cleveland is getting rid of that heartless bastard Lebron. I suspose we wouldn't want him either? What a bunch of nonsense!

First off, from everything I've read on this, Dirk and the Mav's have come to a mutual agreement. He'll resign a four year contract with the Mav's and it will include a no trade clause, which Dirk wanted included in his contract. He's going nowhere!!!

That wouldn't work financially -- first Dirk ain't coming here. Secondly, if Dirk did come here it would be as a FA in what would have to go down as one of the most questioned free agency decisions of all time as a player -- 30-something star player looking for a title ditches his 50+ win career long team to join a team of babies with the third worst record in the league. And of course since we would be signign him as a free agent, and a max free agent, well, there would go all our cap room, so there is no signing Gay as well.

I would further add that to really follow the Boston model the second guy coming in is not Rudy Gay, who is not ready to win a title yet, but rather an older more experienced guy who's been close, fallen short, and has both hunger and saavy. Remember Boston teamed up three guys who will be in the HOF discussion and were 30+ wise old heads (and just as critically actually had Rondo as an x-factor). A guy like Gay is not at that level in age or talent. Maybe Joe Johnson or something. But again, no money, and stylistic issues. Third guy would have to come via trade not FA, so go find an old, frustrated, HOF caliber player who is not a free agent on a team with issues and maybe you can pull it off. CP3, Amare or Wade if they weren't FAs, whatever. Older guys actually, which is why their teams would eb willing to move them, but I frankly can't really think of many appropriate candidates in this wacky summer. Whatever it is, it costs you your youth to put this together, so its got to really work or its a disaster. A second round exit = fail, and Reke gets to come up as a free agent just as everybody else gets old and he gets to say hmmm...I wonder if we're going to be competitive through my prime years a we rebuild? Kinda ala the Wade situation maybe.
