You have O'Neal, but no Duncan? Just curious. How about David Robinson? Great defensive center who also could score. He averaged 21.1 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 2.9 blocks, and 1.4 steals for his career. No Elgin Baylor? He played 14 seasons and averaged 27.4 PPG, 13.5 RPG, and 4.3 assists per game all while standing 6'5". Its hard not to make a case for Barkley or Drexler. So perhaps thats where the line should be drawn.
Duncan didn't change the game the way Shaq did. Neither did Robinson. And, if Olajuwon is your standard, then your Hall Of Fame is going to be limited to players who were as good, or better, than Olajuwon. Robinson, Barkley and Drexler fall short of that criteria.

OK, I'm going to play devils advocate for a minute, and then I'll let it go. On one hand, you could say Shaq changed the game simply because of his being a freak athlete. There aren't many players that come along that are 7'1" without shoes, that have a 36" vertical, and can run like the wind. On the other side, one could argue that Shaq did little to improve his game, simply because he didn't have to. He today, and always has been a very bad freethrow shooter. He has little or no game away from the basket.

O'Neal averaged 24.7 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 2.6 APG, and 2.3 BPG through last year. He won ROY, and was voted NBA MVP one time. He's been voted into the all star game 15 times out of 19 seasons, and has 4 championship rings. He was voted on to the NBA all defensive team 3 times. Throughout his career he's averaged 65 games a season.

Duncan averaged 21.4 PPG, 11.7 RPG, 3.2 APG, and 2.3 BPG. He won ROY, and was voted NBA MVP twice. He's been voted into the all star game 13 times out of 14 seasons. He has 4 championship rings. He's been voted on to the NBA all defensive team 13 times. He is the only player in NBA history to be voted onto the all NBA team, and the NBA all defensive team 13 years in a row.

Now aside from getting caught up in the size and strength of O'Neal, and the fact that he's a one of a kind specimen, I think Duncan's results match up quite well if in some areas aren't better than Shaq's. Duncan also averages playing in 74 games a year. So he's also proven to be more durable than Shaq.

In my humble opinion, if Shaq belongs, then so does Duncan.

The case could be made that two significant rule changes, pertaining to illegal defense/defensive three seconds, and offensive fouls, can be directly attributed to Shaq. That alone, in my opinion, makes Shaq more significant to the culture of the NBA than Duncan. And I like Duncan, he's pretty much my second-favorite active player. But, if you're going by the "Dream as the standard" rule, I don't think he gets in.

webber ring or not was the cornerstone of a franchise, remember when he left who we got for him..

despite him having a drastic decline after the surgery before that he was a monster, he's the kind of guy who can give you triple double at the same time getting people involved. the offense was run through him if I recall.

Webber wasn't the generic bigman who just post up down there, he could pass and had a decent mid-range. he was truly an all-around player, plus his college days wasn't so bad aside from that time out :D. so why not? wh can't he make it? im sure there are lesser players that made it in the HOF.

I did say that perhaps, thanks to your inciteful posts, we should use players like Barkley and Drexler as the standard. I just threw Hakeem out there as the first great player that sprung to mind. Obviously there has to be some flexability in the decision making. Sure glad I didn't throw Chamberlain's name out there. The dude averaged 30 PPG and 22 RPG for his career. Its a shame that we don't know what Chamberlain and Russell's blocked shot records are. The didn't keep that stat when they played.
