Brandon Jennings

You guys will find any excuse to hate this guy, won't you? Not trying to be the devil's advocate, but this is just idiotic of some of you.

The kid was talking to one of his "supposed" friends on the telephone, a conversation that he thought was just between him and his friend (and his friend's girl). Now, what Jennings didn't know was that Joe Budden has a streaming feed, and people watching the feed recorded it and put it on youtube.

I'm sure everybody talks trash to their friends, and a conversation that he thought was private between the three people involved ended up being recorded and put online. The kid wasn't looking for trouble when he said all of this, he just can't catch a break.

Now, I don't support him either, he has said a lot of stupid stuff, but you guys are blowing this way out of proportion.

At first I thought so too about maybe he didn't know until I read this:

That's from his now deleted Twitter page because he apparently was telling his followers to look at the video. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:OtLcJ2dB5zMJ:twitter.com/Bjennings3+brandon+jennings+twitter&hl=en&client=firefox-a&gl=us&strip=1

The guy is clearly an idiot. Has nothing to do with people wanting to dislike him.

I think once he actually gets his clock cleaned a couple of times in the NBA, his ego will find itself occupying a lot less space...

He can talk the talk but I'm thinking his ability to walk the walk is going to be sorely tested by guys who aren't impressed with loud-mouthed rookies who haven't done diddily or squat.

:)

i'd actually pay some money for a feed from the bucks' practices. would like to see how ridnour and sessions treat him. :D

Beside the unclassy language used..I don't really have a problem with what he said.

Not that I agree but he thinks Rubio is a bust and that the Knicks is going to get screwed for skipping out on him. Not sure what the big deal is.

he bragged on twitter that he was going to go on a radio show and be outrageous. he went on a radio show and was ... wonder of wonders ... outrageous. This guy's ego is writing checks his game can't cash (Top Gun paraphrased). He hasn't played ONE game as either a collegiate or a professional. He's gonna be in for a really big surprise and I, for one, will be watching and perhaps even creating a poll to bet which NBA player will "welcome" him to the league first.

He's having his 15 minutes of fame but I predict his future is not going to be that exciting.

Did you see the Twitter posted by elise10? Any comment now that you know Jennings is just using the media and everyone else?

He knew EXACTLY what he was doing ... and what he was doing was being a jerk. He can talk all he wants. Talk is cheap. The real stars let their games do the talking for them. We'll see if that ever happens.

Not to be nitpicky, but he was a professional all last season.

Why would be just be looking for reasons to hate the guy? He's never played against the Kings, what do we as Kings fans care? I know I tried my darnedest to root for the guy until he kept embarrassing himself at every turn. I'll be happy for him if he lives up to his potential but for now I'm glad he's far, far away from my favorite team.

To be honest with you, I'm sure most of the players in the NBA talk like this, especially the young black ones. I don't think he's overly egotistical, but he is confident that he's going to be able to play in the NBA, and I think that's a good thing. He certainly didn't express it properly, and that's where he's lacking.

Athletes and celebrities need to understand that the world is shrinking. There's no such thing as privacy or confidentiality anymore. Everyone knows your business, and you have to be performing all the time. On the one hand, it's kind of sad because they can't really be themselves and just let go, but on the other hand, they ask for this attention, sometimes crave it, and can't complain when something like this happens.

By the way, I'm not condoning his attitude or his speech. But if you spend a half hour in a basketball gym with 20-30 year old guys playing ball, that's what you'll hear. Jennings is just like everyone else, he's just not smart enough to fake it yet.

No, Jennings isn't just like everyone else. He's dumber than a bag of hammers - and that's probably being patently unfair to the hammers.

Hrmm... I normally fall on the same side of the aisle as Supes philospophically, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on this one. Jennings impresses me as the sort of kid who would be greatly improved by a snow shovel to the face.

No. I want to like this kid. In fact, for a while, I kind of wanted him as a King. Jennings is providing reasons to not like him.

If he didn't think it would be broadcasted, then this just shows his true personality. When the cameras and the mics are off - it reveals who we truly are.

AND he knew anyways (The Twitter).

I'm not being clear, I guess. I don't think he's a model citizen, and I think he said some really dumb things. It's probably going to cause him problems as he tries to get off the ground in the NBA.

But when I read the transcript, I understand how people's jaws hit the floor because of the language, and I don't blame them. I'm just not willing to judge the guy based off of this conversation, and if you think that there aren't tons of other guys in the NBA who talk like this among themselves, you're fooling yourself.

So again, he's an idiot, and maybe he should make out with a snow shovel, but I don't think he's too much more of an idiot than most other young NBA players.

Perhaps not, but I think Elise established that he knew he was going to be broadcast. How most young NBA players talk in private and how they talk when they know there's a live mike in front of them are two different things, and the latter speaks to his character far more than the language itself.

I use salty, inappropriate language all the time. But I know where I am, who I'm talking to, who might be listening, etc. This wasn't something I learned in my 20s or 30s either, its how I made it through school for Pete's sake. I also don't make millions of dollars to play a game... though I'm probably a heck of a lot more grateful than this punk for the living I am able to make in this messy economy.

This also isn't the first time he's stuck his foot in his mouth, he has a history of it, on top of all the other red flags that go up about him.

I can't reiterate enough how much I wanted to like this guy. At one point he was headed to my favorite college program and when we first got slotted at 4 in the draft and we all assumed Rubio would be picked 2nd he was my choice as 2nd most promising PG in the draft and a good fit for this team. Then he came back stateside and started moving his mouth.

He's being interviewed by Joe Budden. I'm assuming that's the way those interviews go, though I honestly don't know. Regardless, you're right, there is a difference between him and others in that he didn't bother to perform for the camera.

I'm not aware of all that, and maybe that makes the difference.

I just hope the outrage isn't about "how could he use that language?", and "how dare he disrespect his teammates and fellow players like that!", and "the 'N' word, really?" If this is about what's politically correct and what can and can't be said, then you're fooling yourself. This language is commonplace.

If, however, it's about how you deport yourself as a public figure, then I understand the outrage, especially if he has a track record of this type of nonsense -- which is exactly what it is. I just hope no one thinks that he's the only one who talks like this among his friends.

He was talking quite a bit in advance of the draft and that is what soured me on him initially. Some said "Oh, he's just being confident, that's a good thing." Which makes me wonder why he hid in a hotel room on draft night until after he had been picked.

I don't think it has to do with "performing for the cameras." I've always thought I wouldn't like celebrity much, because you have little if any privacy left. I'd hate that and, if examined so closely, most anyone of us could be made to look bad.

Having said that however, there is definitely a difference in the way I talk/behave to a few close friends or family members (very few) and how I talk/behave to people I work with, clients, aquaintances, etc. That doesn't mean I'm "performing" or being false with most people. It just means I know there's a time and place for certain type of behavior and I'm careful about the level of trust I can give different people.

It's the basics we teach kids. That and people who don't really know us and likely never will really know us have nothing but what we say or do to base a judgement on. Well that and how we look. I don't wear shorts to work. I don't want to traumatize anyone. :p

There's a story (a rather strange one) behind that:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/luke_winn/06/26/draft/index.html

S.I said:
4. I found two bizarre press releases sitting on a table in the press room early in the evening. The first was a plain sheet with the header "Bill Duffy Statement on Brandon Jennings", and then this paragraph:
Because we do not have [sic] strong grasp of Brandon's draft position, I've advised that he and his family enjoy this day in a more private setting with the people he loves the most. Brandon Jennings will have a very illustrious career in the NBA, and at the end of the day, that is all that is important." -- Bill Duffy, President and CEO, BDA Sports Management
In non-press-release terms, what that meant was that they were freaked out about the possibility Jennings would fall into the 20s and be the last man in the green room, so they pulled the weak move of hiding out in a suite at the draft hotel (the Westin Times Square). This was a Duffy-driven decision, but Jennings admitted to SI.com that family history played a role in it, too: He didn't want a repeat of what happened to his cousin, Marcus Williams, in the 2006 draft. Williams slid all the way to No. 22 and was the dreaded LMITGR, so, Jennings said, "I already had a little cold feet because of that."

LMITGR= Last Man In The Green Room

Thanks Elise - I actually knew the story - I was using it to refute the argument that he's just really confident. That strikes me as the ultimate wuss move ever.

Interesting...I didn't know he was related to Marcus Williams. Obviously his agents didn't have that much faith in him or they wouldn't have worried about him being the LMITGR. I think he's all talk and bluster and I do not foresee much of a career for him in the NBA.

I've mentioned before that if I were his agent and thought that there was a risk of him dropping into the 20s I would have yanked him from the green room myself -- why humiliate your client?

Yanking him from the green room in and of itself didn't bother me. Him showing up after two additional picks had been made did... You're either there or you're not.

what sucks for him is that i don't think he knew that joe budden was recording it, or at least thats what it looks like. Its easy to talk profane about sports with friends, but it's weird to hear someone in the league talking like that. Most of the time the players are all sound like cookie cutter images of David Stern's empire of mechanical, monotonous beings. In the words of George Lopez, "That way he learns."
