Boston perspective on Rondo trade rumors

They just rolled the dice with Rudy though. When traded it was said him opting in wasn't even brought up.
With the reputation he had around the league before the deal, there is no way in hell Rudy would have opted out of his last year. He would not have gotten anywhere near enough to what he is currently earning.

After a season he has had with us, he is a good chance to opt out and cash it in.

Resign is very different to re-sign ;)

I'm glad you jumped on it before Slim found it. Ha! Still. no matter which way it is spelled, I think people know what is meant and in the end, if a communication has been made, the English language has served it's purpose.

Everybody take a breath this isn't new ( rondo wanting to be a free agent) or about him not wanting to be in sacramento. Rondo has said since October that he wants to be a free agent that's why he hasn't signed with boston either, he just wants to be a free agent. Now the thing will be should PDA take a chance with rondo/gay/DMC that we will be a playoff team next year or hold on to our assets.

If that big 3 can lead us to the rondo will stay. If we don't make the playoffs than we are ****ed.

As an aside, with IT now mentioned in a very public rumor as being offered, I think the chances he'd sign an extension with us just went down. How many players sign extensions the summer following being offered in a trade? Might increase the chances we do make a move including IT, for Rondo or someone else as it's tough to shop a guy around in Feb with him signing a new contract in July being the fallback option.

Only counter to that is we didn't give up anything of value to get Gay. All that was contract fodder. This is a much bigger deal long term.

I would guess Gay wouldn't opt out next season knowing Rondo would be there. They could have a full season together to see if they could really make noise

True, but I think not doing this deal could be just as big of a gamble if the holdup is Rondo's opinion. Could very well see us with Rudy opting out and walking, IT walking, and really nothing of substance on this roster going into free agency this summer and next season aside from a pissed off Boogie.

Gay was pretty inefficient with the Raptors.. he was the guy that no one wanted to trade for... shooting under .400% scoring 19pts on 19shots... he was a chucker that was vastly overpaid. The kings gave up role players that did not fit the team.

We didn't give up much for him at all.

edit: At the time of the trade no one was thinking Gay would opt out.. no one knew he would turn into this efficient assisting scorer. The only dice we rolled was having him take up our cap room. I don't think anyone expected Gay to become the Memphis he was again..

Kind of throwing all you got into one year ( next year) if it don't work out you lose Rondo, Gay, and get a disinterested cousins for a couple years then lose him. Then back in rebuild mode

But if you stand pat then you aren't a playoff team next year and you have no rondo, no Gay, possibly an overpaid or no IT and a disinterested cousins.

I say take the gamble for the one year.

That's not true. It's a gamble to make the move, have Rudy play well(which was PDA's expectation, that he was used incorrectly in Toronto and would benefit from playing under Malone), then turn around and not do enough to keep him, pissing off your franchise center and making us even less attractive to FA's.

Also, would Rondo really decide to be a cancer or suck ass in his contract year? The more I think about it, the less reasonable it becomes for the Kings to decline this trade.

Well we don't really know what they were thinking but it was probably something in between. They thought Gay can come in and make the kings competitive....and we honestly just needed a SF...any SF. I remember a lot of fans didn't like the trade for Gay. Not particularly on this forum, but elsewhere. It wasn't because we were losing role players, but because they just saw him as a player who threw up shots. His limited time with the kings has been arguably his best year as a pro. The gamble on Gay wasn't as huge as of a gamble compared to what we were trying to do with Rondo.

Still with Williams and an expiring Thornton and outlaw as pretty good assets next year. Although I don't see how the IT, Ben and picks get rondo. Some salary has to go.

I honestly think that we are a very good chance to keep Rudy around if he opts out barring a max offer from another team. He just fits too well and I think he has learnt that he is at his best paired with a dominant low post presence. Add Rondo to that mix and I think its a certainty. Banking on Rondo to change his mind is entirely another issue though.

Got year and a half to change his mind. If we don't take that gamble where are we? That's the big question

Would you have liked this deal? The kings have a protected pick this year that'll most likely end up being ours. It's protected top 10 all the way until 2017. We don't have a 2nd rounder this year and we owe you guys a 2nd rounder next year that's protected from 31-55. That could have been the 2nd pick.

It would have been IT+Ben+1st rounder(top 10)+ ? rounder for Rajon Rondo

Technically, we can't really trade that pick until the lottery so it would be a first rounder from a couple of years down the line.

would it be possible to not include that in the written contract of the deal, then on draft night, draft the player that the Celtics want and trade him there? I'm not sure how these would work.

I dont know about trading two picks if were talking about first rounders. I think 1 pick should be enough along with Ben McLemore and IT. Maybe the rights to swap our 2014 with theirs possibly. Overall though I say take the risk and do it. Rondo, Gay, and Cousins give us star power like we've never seen in Sac. Fill around them and we got something special.

doubt we are. Very hard for us to trade two first rounders in our position More likely our first rounder this year, which is likely top 10, and then a second round pick that we had protected or some such.

Actually apparently we can, but as PDA says, "its complex".
I suppose Chicago would give up both their mid teen first rounders for complete rights to our top 10. Maybe put in stipulation that out of the three picks they get the top pick. We then have two first rounders to trade to Boston
