As annoying as Walton is to listen to, I think his presence in the organization may still be a net positive for our players. Perhaps the Maloofs were aware of this when they hired him, hence limiting him to the second and third quarters only of the TV broadcast. Not to mention the guy went through an awful lot with his back injuries and it's a gesture of good will to bring in a noted Laker apologist and give him his first broadcasting job after the long absence. Sometimes he makes me laugh, most of the time I just try to ignore him. I'll put up with him for now anyway because he is a likable guy and a former NBA great however bad he may be at his current job.

I think the hardest part of being an acknowledged basketball fan is the comparative lack of respect you get. The perception is its all flash and dash, and the fans are all amateur idiots compared to the hardcorers in football and baseball. And maybe that's right in the end. There is no way fans of those sports would tolerate a tool like Walton ****ing up their broadcsts. Color yes. Not being a blathering idiot. They take their sports more seriously than that and want to hear rational takes on the game. Attempts to insert the distracting idiot into the booth in those sports have been greeted with venom. You keep your color guys to the pregame shows, have analysts do the games. As it should be. Only in basketball do you get people actually arguing FOR Dennis Miller. It contributes to the perception that basketball fans aren't there for the love and knowledge of the sport, they are there for the love of the show. And any show will do, even if its a dog and pony act that takes completely away from the game behind it.
It's all arbitrary. Every fan is different. I personally don't need a commentator to make my decision on the game both in football and in basketball. For me, they are more of nuisance. If I'm watching a game and missed a play, the replay will clear everything up. Commentators are there to explain the game for the average person who doesn't know the rules and is watching for entertainment purposes rather than religiously studying every play.

So, having Walton come in for a quarter provides much needed comedic relief for me from the near monotonous play by play from Reynolds/Napear. He is not a full time commentator and no one actually takes him serious, but are amused at how preposterous his statements are. I mean he says things so out of the blue that you simply go "WTF???" and laugh hysterically.
