Big Ben

Ben Wallace, free agent in July. Surely that deserves a thread all its own. Chicago and Toronto are the front runners. Hmmmm. Any chance that the Maloofs could roll the dice...

Ignoring all the Artest drama, I think the Pistons' recent playoff showing makes a Big Ben exit all the more likely. He will still command big $$$ this summer, and since they didn't even make the finals after such a successful regular season, I feel they have to balk somewhat at a max deal.

But they're still nowhere near luxury tax, and even if they have to give Billups a big pay raise next summer they should still be under the threshold. Now, do they give Big Ben a raise but look to move Sheed because they're tired of his act? A possibility.

And what does this all mean for the Kings? Sure, Miller's name will get thrown around out there first, but SAR is an interesting possibility if the Pistons would be looking for a cheap offensive post player. Of course, he'd have to be packaged with one of the Kids to make it work.

Is it all worth it? Perhaps. Either Sheed or Ben would pretty much erase any of Brad's shortcomings if paired together on the defensive end. Chemistry could be a bigger problem. Do we really want to reuinte Sheed and Bonzi? Do Ben and Ron have a longstanding beef? Can Muss maintain the positive chemistry and atmosphere that massaged the big egos during the Adelman era? Nothing is certain.

Yeah, I agree after what happened with the Pistons, Ben isn't a lock to return to Detroit. I would look into acquiring him, even though he is 32. Would have to accept it as a quick fix that could bite you in a few years.

Ben and Ron should be able to co-exist, unless one of them is prone to jealousy. Then having two guys competing for the DPoY award might not be a good thing. I don't think there is any bad blood between them other than competitiveness.

Sheed on the other hand I do not want.

Now you have to wonder if trading away Darko was the right choice. All of a sudden that looks like a potential blunder.

Why is it the pistons have all these big name players...yet it was said early in the thread that they are nowhere near the luxury tax?? Why does it seem like the kings are ALWAYS at the luxuray tax level or above...and we don't have as high quality players?? That pisses me off if that's in fact true.

Well, its again the fortuitous thing where the Pistons don't have anyone THAT amazing, and all of them blossomed a bit in Detroit. But nobody other teams are going to drop mega-deals on as saviors...until now with Ben.

Landing Ben will require BIG bucks and the the Kings just don't have the cap space. Sign and trade is a long shot as I doubt we have anyone they would be THAT interested in. But it is a nice dream. ;)

Well, actually, the Pistons may be close to tax territory with the Prince extension. Hoopshype doesn't contain the details of the deal, though, so it's hard to tell exactly.

Just imagine the national media circus. Artest and Big Ben on the same team? After that Palace brawl? They'll just be itching for something to happen.

Whoever said that is not entirely accurate. The Pistons, right now, have returning salaries of approximately $40 million, and $36 million through 2007 (tied up among only 7 players, with two of them having player options - one being Billups, who will surely terminate because it is well below market value). The luxury tax threshold this year was like $59 million, right? I could be wrong on that, but I think that's it.

That leaves $19M this year, and $22 next year. But Tayshaun Prince signed a contract extension of approximately 9-10M a year. Depending on how that breaks down, let's say $8M in 2007.

Down to $14M. Billups also wants an extension this year. That's going to have to go around $10M for Billups. Ben will want the same. At that point they are way over the luxury tax threshold.

There have time to create some wiggle room, but I don't see how they can sign Billups AND Wallace to the kind of $ those players will ask for, and command on the open market.

Like pathetic idiots? Yup.

I'm not sure we go after Ben. The Artest/Ben stuff I actually wouldn't be worried about. As whatever stuff they've had are things that go away over time. What was it, the flagrant foul, shove, DPOY stuff, right? Or am I missing something. If Ben still has that garbage somewhere in his mind (is there even evidence of that since sometime after the brawl?), that's quite sad.

I think they'd put it aside after 2 1/2 years when they'd meet up in training camp, if Ben ever did come here somehow.

Ben W. is 32? Wow, i thought he was younger than that by about 3-5 years.

lol, me too, I actually didn't know he was with the Bullets back in 96-97. Since I only heard the Wizards, and I figured in 1999/2000.
