[AWARDS] Byron Scott wins NBA Coach of the Year

http://www.nba.com/news/scott_coy_080428.html

In his fourth season as the Hornets’ head coach, Scott received 458 points, including 70 first-place votes, from a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Coaches were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers was second with 242 points (23 first-place votes) and the Houston Rockets’ Rick Adelman was third with 193 points (17 first-place votes).

I dont understand how Doc Rivers beat Adelman in first place votes. And again Jerry Sloan isn't even mentioned.

Congrats, well deserved. Chandler has been in the league awhile and he is finally playing to his potential under Scott, West was an 18th pick and now is an All-Star forward in the west, Paul has made leaps and bounds this year in the regular season and playoffs, while his bench isn't one of the stronger ones in the league.

Scott played with HOFers, competed and won against HOFers, was coached by a HOFer, and was an assistant to a future HOF coach in Adelman, not to mention an excellent shooter and defender in his day. The man knows what it takes to win.

Lived in Inglewood, had a connection to get into games at the Forum as a kid. Saw West and Wilt and later Kareem, well before becoming his teammate.

Still no worse than the 2nd best player to grad from ASU (Fat Lever). Fourth pick in the draft, traded for Norm Nixon, who was still solid. Sterling's last trade w/ LA.

Sunk Orlando in Gm3 of the 94 1st round with a corner three. Play drawn up for him, not Reggie.

Won Finals MVP after pro retirement in Greece. Defended some young punk named Peja in the championship game.

Lead the Nets(!) to the Finals(!!). Twice(!!111).

A 20+ win streak without Yao is impressive

A 66 win team that didn't make the playoffs the year before can't be ignored either (despite the new team having such superstars as Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett). They had the best record in the NBA, the coach has to recieve something for that.

Jerry Sloan had 6 first place votes, 4 second place votes and 7 third place votes. The breakdown is at the bottom of the link.

Congrats!

NEW ORLEANS - APRIL 29: New Orleans Hornets players (L-R) Ryan Bowen, Chris Paul, Jannero Pargo and Tyson Chandler applaud Byron Scott, head coach of the New Orleans Hornets as he is selected as the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2007-08 NBA Coach of the Year during a press conference at the New Orleans Arena on April 29, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

True, but you have to take into account that the coach that took them to such a horrible record last year was the same guy. Obviously someone can do a better job coaching from one year to the next, but it would seem likely that the other changes are what made the difference, not the coach.

It would have been nice to see Adelman get it, but at the same time the Rockets only won a few more games than last year. The win streak is why he should be second place over Rivers, in my opinion.
