After hearing that Salmons would be joining our team once again, I was not too enthusiastic about. He is an upgrade from what we had before, but anyone could have been an upgrade to our SF position. The trade didn’t make me feel like this is our SF of the future. It left me wanting to upgrade the position again. I happened to be fond of Granger and was hoping we would make a move for him before the draft. Unfortunately, I was let down. Then I revisited the idea of trying to get Granger on this team and came up with this plan.
Kings Trade:
Salmons
Hickson
Pacers Trade:
Granger
So why would the Pacers do this trade?
For starters, they would be getting Hickson who is a young big man who began to breakout last year. They could slot him next to Hibbert who would be a nice compliment to Hickson considering Hibbert is more a defensive minded big man and Hickson is a more offensive minded big man. Adding that both of them are young (Hibbert – 24 and Hickson – 22), they could have a solid frontcourt for years to come. This move would also allow them to shift Hansbrough to the bench. I always thought of Hansbrough as a sixth man because he doesn’t have the best skill set in the world, but he has tremendous intensity and energy which is exactly what you are looking for when you are going to your bench during games.
Secondly, the Pacers drafted Leonard this year which means they have Granger, George, and Leonard who can all play that SF position. By trading away Granger and acquiring talent at other positions, it allows them to free up their SF spot while improving their team.
Lastly, Salmons could be a nice fit for them because Leonard might need some time to get acclimated. He can provide some decent minutes for them at their SF position.
After this trade, their rotation will look like this:
PG – Collison
SG – Salmons
SF – George
PF – Hickson
C – Hibbert
Bench:
Hansbrough
Hill
Leonard
Price
Jones
As Leonard adjusts to the NBA, they can have George and Leonard as their starting SG and SF while they push Salmons to the bench.
Now for the Kings perspective…
As of now we have three big men on our team that are worthy of getting consistent minutes (Cousins, Hickson, and Thompson). Most of us don’t like the idea of a combination of those three being our starters because none of them stand out very much on the defensive side of the ball. With that being said, I feel that it is imperative that we bring in a defensive big through free agency. If the Kings were to do this then we would have a log jam of big men. By trading away Hickson, it frees this up allowing us to sign a defensive big and not think twice about it.
The benefits of upgrading Salmons with Granger should be obvious (Shooting, Size, Rebounding, and Defense).
The next discussion goes into what defensive big would be our first choice. I feel that there are three big men that would fit in nicely.
Dalembert – He played with us last year and fit very nicely with our players. Complimented Cousins quite well and has always been known as an elite rebounder and shot blocker. He is an athletic center who is capable of guarding athletic power forwards. He is 30 years old.
Chandler – He played with the Mavs last year. Has the experience of winning a ring. He is an all-around good defensive center. He is very intimidating in the paint and has great leadership and intangibles. He also plays within himself on offense and doesn’t distract or take away from the teammates that are much better than him at scoring. He is 28 years old.
Jordan – He played with the Clippers last year. He is similar to Dalembert in that he is a very good at rebounding and blocking shots. His athletic ability is also above average for a center. He is very efficient as a scorer because he plays within himself, but he is a horrid free throw shooter. He is 22 years old.
I honestly can’t make up my mind on which one I want the most. Dalembert compliments Cousins almost perfectly, Chandler has the leadership and intangibles, and Jordan has the youth. I would be happy with any one of these guys on the Kings next season.
If the kings were to pull this off, their rotation would look like this:
PG – Evans
SG – Thornton
SF – Granger
PF – Cousins
C – Dalembert/Chandler/Jordan
Bench:
Fredette
Garcia
Greene
Thompson
Whiteside
