Angela Tsai....Why?

To call this hyperbole would be a gross understatement.

Her exact words were:

If you got "we hated her because she is a woman and not only that but an attractive one" out of that, well... you were determined to find it.

I'd be remiss if I didn't expect a certain amount of hostility or chauvinistic comments about my appearance etc. So I'm not concerned about that.

This is probably was meant by thinking we hated her, because she was a woman. I looked at it as her saying that anyone saying that she was attractive was a chauvinist, which is just a werid statement. Me saying she's attractive isn't chauvinistic, it's a compliment.

She should be happy people think she's attractive, if she wasn't, she wouldn't have a career doing what she's doing unless she was a great reporter. She's not a great reporter, but she's nice to look at, which allowed her at least some of the opportunities she has had.

She is still 1000x better than Jim Gray.

She is infinitely better than Rupe the Hoop, sorry for regurgitating the bad memories.

Kings fans don't know how spoiled they are not to have to listen to Lakers or Clippers broadcasts everytime they play. I actually prefer the Lakers broadcast team to the Clippers. After having NBA league pass for 2 years I think the Clippers team is the worst in the league.

For a team with as many problems as ours, (New Arena?) our sideline reporter ranks dead last.

I can only speak for myself and what I have read but I have no problem with her being a woman, I have no problem with her appearance, and I have no problem with change. I also have never read any posts from this site which were chauvinistic...

Those took me just a few minutes to find; and I can assure you that there were entirely too many posts that were worse that those, which were mercifully deleted.

Why not just think of Angela as a Royal Court Dancer with clothes?

"89" is right. Remember Rupe?

What about all those television advertisements for that horrible local country-western radio station, or that fat putz mail-boy that is featured on the "too much good stuff" commercials? They repeat these advertisements several times per game. I have to hold my ears and try to look the other way.

Angela Tsai a problem? Hardly. What a bunch of whiners.

No offense to this girl because I'm sure shes a nice person but why do they keep putting her on air? She does not have the personality to be reporting from the sidelines. When she talks, it's obvious shes reading. When she does interviews, it feels really awkward.

Yea, Angela's not so hot on the sidelines. Things go well until she opens her mouth.

But in her defense, that old dude who won the car had to be the worst interview ever! (1) He couldn't hear. (2) He couldn't put two words together.

I think they should make Kayte the sideline reporter....she's smokin' hot. And she really articulates her opinions well. I love that girl :D

My thoughts?

Angela Tsai could be the nicest, sweetest person in the world but - like other MSE ideas - she's not someone I'll tune in to watch. In fact, I generally get up to refresh my beverage or whatever during her segments as I quickly learned my IQ actually starts to drop if I listen to her too often.

Is that sexist? Nope. She and I are the same gender.

Remember Rupe the Hoop? I equate Angela with him...

Sorry, Angela, since I know you or at least someone close to you reads this board, but I'm not impressed with your performances on the air. You chose this profession so to act as though you are being mistreated by the fans for posting comments is ridiculous. You're in the public eye. You have to be willing to accept the bad with the good.

Kings fans are a special lot. We KNOW our team, we KNOW our team history. We aren't going to be drawn in by cutesy interviews on the sidelines and, quite frankly, I think it's just a little insulting to a lot of us to hear you with the "gee whiz golly, have you ever heard Arco this loud?"

Um, yes? DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Maybe if you didn't come across as a deer in the headlights all the time you'd find more support but trying to win people over on message boards by playing the gender card isn't gonna cut it. It's not about your gender. A good number of the fans on this board are women and we don't play the gender card. We've chosen to "compete" in a male-dominant arena because we love basketball and we love the Kings. And it's not a love that came about because we were offered a job. It's a feeling about the team that goes all the way to the bone.

I don't have a real problem with your fluff filler pieces but your courtside interviews are SADLY lacking, at least IMHO.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Not my point, G3. I don't dislike her because she's a female. I dislike her because she's patently bad at what she does.

I know you don't get to see many games, so I don't think you've been fully exposed to just how badly she does her job.

I see her as the Dee Kantner of sideline reporting...

I wasn't even addressing the rest of your post, to be honest, that statement just stuck out to me. And I didn't mean to infer that you were being sexist in this case, just that being a woman doesn't automatically mean that you can't have certain sexist ideas/ideals toward other women.

Oh my. Now see...those are the sorts of comments that just pour fire on the whole sexism thing (which otherwise I don't buy -- if anything I think the sexism in sports is that we expect and accept the sideline/fluff reporters to be women, but have a problem accepting them as analysts).

It's interesting that we have the exact opposite thing going on here. The fluff reporter (Tsai) gets slammed repeatedly and the analyst (Christensen) is accepted. The difference is that Kayte is good at what she does and Angela isn't.

And yet it undoubtedly helps that Kayte is an attractive woman -- I remember Kara getting slammed repeatedly for being, well, otherwise, and yet from what I saw of her it was clear she always really knew her stuff (I think Kayte does as well from my limited exposure to her -- ironically I think it has been the women they have tried out as analysts who have been far more incisive than the various dim and goofy ex-players they have trotted through).

Meanwhile that attractiveness attribute doesn't factor in at all on a Grant, or Jerry, or Marv, or Walton, or etc. etc. (or at lest I assume not )

Which is all obviously a larger sociological issue largely outside the realm of this simple thread -- Angela's job description would obviously be different from that of one of the analysts.

Not a factor for me....;)

I really like Kara and Kayte. They both seem quite sharp and basketball smart. I would probably give the edge to Kara. She really expains and describes things exceptionally well, I think.

I just think Angela looks very awkward and that hasn't seemed to change much over the season. I'm not particularly fond of most sideline reporting and fluff pieces, no matter what sport it is, though. The comment about the loudness of Arco was really inexcusable. If she'd just commented on how loud it was this particular night, it might've been fine, but ever.....? Big mistake and insulting to long-time Kings fans, really.

I will start off by saying I have never agreed with you before..........

UNTIL NOW... I don't know what it is about her, but .. If there was a "amazon planet" (heh Star Trek) she should be queen..

And she's a good reporter
:)

First, let's be honest. Angela was hired in large part because she's "cute". If she had buckteeth, a double chin, and stringy hair, she'd never have a TV job. So lets agree on that. It's not sexist. They also don't hire TV men that are ugly either.

Now, nobody minds that she's cute. But the job, once you pass the looks requirement, the next requirement is to be good at the job.
Being a nice person isn't a job requirement either. If it were, Napier would never have a job.

Again, the real requirement is to be GOOD at interviewing, thinking on your feet, not stumbling and saying stupid things.

Calling Joe Maloof "the Six-man of the year" was a "huh?" moment, one of many. She needs to have someone write interview questions for her, that would help. And she needs to stop speaking too quick because 99% of the time, it's embarassing.

And yes, I have NBA League pass and have seen a lot of other sideline reporters. Because there might be another one out there that isn't very good, does that mean it's Ok to hire a reporter who's this bad? And for the record, of all the other sideline reporters I've seen for other teams, none are as bad as Angela.

It's not personal, I'm sure she's a sweet person. But she's just not cut out for this kind of job. Put her on a TV reporting position where she just reads copy. She'd be great at that.

And again, if my evaluation were sexist, then why do I think Kayte is one of the best analysts we've ever had? Including Kara who set a high bar? People who whine about "I'm a girl in a man's world" need to stop making stupid excuses.

Cute.

You could put up Barbara Walters pix too.

They do hire people who are just so good at what they do, it overcomes the looks. Are you claiming that Angela was hired because she's just so good at what she does?

I will offer neither speculation nor innuendo with respect to why she was hired.

The topic is an evaluation of her work. I was making the point that neither her looks nor her sex have anything to do with the quality of her work. And the quality of her work is what we're talking about. It's not very good.

She is a decent reporter. And sometimes, decent is better than good. It's important to recognize the difference between good and decent. She is not a detriment to anybody accept her boyfriend assuming she has one. Other than her weird anti-male comments, im for keeping her around.

That's not a fake injury is it? I wish you a quick recovery.

Um, what?!?!?

Decent is better than good? Care to elaborate? Not that I actually buy into your first assumption, which is that she's "a decent reporter."

I think the actual saying is, "better lucky than good," which also doesn't apply in this case. Someone made a sports analogy earlier, and I think it may apply. Seeing as this is her first year here, maybe she'll look back at the tapes and improve going into next year. Maybe she'll spend the off-season getting to know Sacramento and its fans a little better.

Then again, maybe she won't. ¿Que se yo?

God her interviews with star players are horrible. Usually the players do a good job of pretending that the reporter isn't asking the same questions theyve heard about 500 other times and completely wasting their time when they could be off doing something much more worth while. For some reason, when the questions are coming out awkwardly like they do with Angela, the players lose their ability to answer the questions with much interest. Fake or not.

Angela Tsai's husband, Michael Hollick, voiced the main character of Grand Theft Auto IV. So if we keep hatin on her stuff, Nico Bellic is gonna go head-hunting.

Wooow. What a crazy connection. I remembering looking in the back of my GTA4 booklet to see if Niko's voice was anyone familiar, and it wasn't. Had no idea he was married to her.
