Coincidence? I think not...
It doesn't have anything to do with DVR. They are bleeding the ratings into the next hour. Survivor, The Office, Grey's Anatomy...all the networks top shows do the same thing.

Nevertheless, it's stupid.

Thanks for posting links to Adam's performance. I recorded the show, since I was at the Kings's game, so I would have been really ticked to miss it.

I'll go back to watch what is recorded on my DVR, but I find it hard to imagine anyone topped that amazing performance by Adam. He does have a tenor voice, which is not usually a favorite with me, but he is so melodious and controls his vocals so well. Beyond that he is just a natural born performer.

Aside from his version of "Ring of Fire," which I did not like, he has never failed to move me. (BTW, he sang his version of the song fine, I just didn't like it that way.) On occasion, so have some of the others, but I've come to expect it with Adam.

Maybe but right now I'm so angry with Fox. I just watch the Fringe show on my dvr, but it ended on time so I missed taping the last 5 mins. because Idol ran long. It's like the Heidi Bowl all over.

They don't normally do it this bad. Usually its just the recaps of the performances or the go home clips. And they often actually schedule those extra 5 minutes into the DVR scheduler. Anyhow I have 3 shows I watch Wednesdays at 9, AI is getting bumped tomorrow for this. Not that I'm a Nielsen house or anything but still.

Sorry for the earlier rant. I spent the past hour and change waiting for the clip to download...and I was very, very glad I did.

Adam Lambert knocked my socks off. A standing ovation by Simon Cowell? That pretty much says it all. I cannot wait for his first album to come out. What an amazingly talented young man...

I forgot you were on dial up, how awful that must have been. I found the link rather easily last night after posting my rant but wasn't sure it was kosher to post here.

Now that I've calmed down myself...

Danny - Ummm, I thought the theme was songs released the year you were born? What a cop out. And what an arrangement... Not good.

Kris - I like Kris and the vocal was good but this song sucks, the arrangement overpowered the vocal. I still think he's uber marketable and despite the crap song the ladies really seemed to dig it.

Lil - Lil doesn't fail to disappoint yet again. She's a karaoke singer that has never lived up to her diva billing.

Anoop - Vocally this was ok. One of the better song choices of the night. Should be safe on a night many others faltered. Plus they let him suck up for being a jerk last week.

Scott - For serious? He's still here? And he picked THAT song? Its Survivor, right? I see it on the lists at karaoke and scratch my head and go what song is that? all the time. He looked into my eyes? He can see forever? Love was right before his eyes??? C'mon, don't make a blind man sing this tripe, its bad enough for anyone. I swear there are handlers back there that get a giggle out of making this kid look like a horses rear end whether it be by dressing him like a doofus or giving him awful songs to sing.

Allison - I do like Allison, I am starting to get bored with her though as she's a one trick pony which I predicted would happen early on. She's the Secretariat of one trick ponies though. This was sung and performed very well, I just feel this song (and her outfit) are too old for her. If she wins she's going to be marketed like Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Avril, whoever... I'd like to see something closer to that from her. Being the youngest contestant it should have been easy to get the most contemporary sounding song for her. Oh well. Still 2nd best by a longshot.

Matt - I don't really like him but he picked a song that worked for what he's good at and it was upbeat and brought some needed energy to the night. Good enough for 3rd best for me.

Adam - Really good, a little bit over the top at the end which makes it not quite as good as Gary Jules but I like the Jules take over the original so glad he went that route. Even in tiny computer vision the highlight of the night.

Bottom 3 - Lil, Scott and probably Anoop. I'd personally but Danny here for breaking the spirit of the night with that song selection and Kris is most deserving of the scary 3rd spot. If Scott doesn't go home it will be a travesty, especially if its anyone other than Lil that gets the boot. I'd also put slim odds at 20% that they throw out the vote tonight because they couldn't stick to their schedule last night.

Thank you, Simon, for two things...the standing ovation for Adam last night and, even more importantly, making the decision and sending Scott home. There's just no way he was going to make it through ...

You really need to let go of your hatred of Danny at least a little bit... The Mickey Gilley version of "Stand By Me" was released the year he was born and it was HUGE. In fact, there were an awful lot of people who wouldn't or didn't believe it had been done earlier by B.B. King... So his selection was perfectly legit.

Its still a song from the 60s and nobody else to my knowledge pulled that "covering a cover" nonsense last night. From what I can tell it barely cracked the top 40 pop charts that year so I'm not sure that's "huge". I know it was in Urban Cowboy which produced at least 2-3 far more memorable tunes. Regardless I found the arrangement to be a complete bastardization of Ben E King's classic. I would have said that no matter who sang it. You know I'm not shy about bashing those I like either.

I don't know about the top 40 pop charts but I know it was hugely popular in Sacramento, for example. I lived through those years and there was a club in West Sacramento that a bunch of us frequented on the weekends. Stand By Me by Mickey Gilley was the most requested song for about three months...

(And oops...talk about a brain fart. I don't know why I said "B.B. King". Thanks for tactfully making the correction.)

Was Mickey Gilley's version as awful as Danny's? :) It would explain why I erased it from my memory until last night. I had a friend who made me watch Urban Cowboy a dozen times in college and honestly I only vaguely recollect it. I don't even know who Mickey Gilley is but I am going to go out on a limb and guess that he is the Gilley of the Gilley's club.

I caught the end tonight. The right person went home tonight which I guess means the show is batting around .500 in that regard. I didn't get the charade about saving him, he was far and away the weakest singer left on the show. To his credit he did the song much better without the guitar. And the "watch your video" was less awkward than I expected it to be thanks to all his fellow contestants joining him at center stage when Ryan told him to look at the screen.

Mickey Gilley's version was much cleaner than Danny's. And yes, Mickey Gilley ran Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas, which might have been - I don't remember for sure - where parts of Urban Cowboy were filmed.

I found Gilley's version on youtube. I will say this - I didn't really care for it, but its obviously a country song how Gilley sings it so I understood where its coming from. My problem with Danny's version was he took the country arrangement but since he doesn't have a country voice it sounded like a mess to my ears. To me it was him trying to win the night with the superior song choice but not picking a song (or in this case the arrangement) that suits his voice, hence it still feels like a cop out, to me. Had he done King's version on a different night I could have appreciated it for what it was. But the reason I can't rank him higher than 4th at this point is not hate but that I genuinely believe the three I rank ahead of him better understand their instrument, its limitations and how to work within them than he does. But I did say that Kris who I have championed all season as the 3rd best deserved a spot in the bottom 3 last night. Ultimately I think he is far more marketable than Danny who will have limited appeal after his run on the show.

Then again I don't understand why the Pickler is on my screen 3 years after her AI run at all.

If I could make Anoop and Lil a tie for 7th I would because with only 2 weeks left to use it I would not burn the save on either of them but would on the other 5.

Speaking of Pickler, that song she sang last night was terrible.
Yes, I edited my thoughts on it because they weren't coherent (much like the song). But I was thinking, man this sounds like Taylor Swift minus Taylor's cute factor and then lo and behold they co-wrote the song together.

I don't know what part of Pickler's "performance" bothered me the most. There are three distinct possibilities:

1. Her being there in the first place.
2. Her "flirting" with Simon which nearly made me hurl.
3. The banter with Ryan afterwards.

I would much rather have seen someone like Constantine back again than the Pickler...

Question about future shows: What are the themes for the upcoming weeks?

I know it might be in this thread already but I can't find it and I've searched the AI site without success, too.

This really creeped me out, but basically from the moment that she got on the stage she was acting like a contestant and not someone with an actual record deal - from playing grab hand with the front row to dancing at the judges table. Really unpolished. She also did this funny knee thing I do when I'm bowling and trying to get my ball to hook a little more. Very odd. And to top it off at the very end they had to practically push her off the stage at which point she still wouldn't surrender the limelight and just had to go over to the contestants and start wishing them good luck on mic. WOW.

But still I'm pretty sure I'd take that over seeing Constantine again.

1) Lambert--Consistent, versatile performer.
2) Gokey--Falling from early hype with mediocre performances; questionable versatility
3) Iraheta--Talented yo-yo. Hunch she's going to be better from this point out. Great singer
4) Giraud--Probably the best vocalist of this bunch. Soul singer, but also solid at alternative rock. Reminds of Elliott Yamin
5) Allen--Has been consistent until the past week, but lacks personality and I'm not sure his music is mainstream
6) Desai--Better vocalist than given credit for, but also a yo-yo. Terrible at up-tempo songs, works better with emotional songs
7) Rounds--Exposed. Worse R&B singer than past Idols, screams the song, hasn't sang a song well since early on

KingsFans.com American Idol Power Ranking - Week #5
1. Adam Lambert - 35 (5 first place vote)
2. Danny Gokey - 26

3. Allison Iraheta - 25
4. Matt Giraud - 22
5. Kris Allen - 14
6. Anoop Desai - 10
7. Lil Rounds - 8

I have been a Lil Rounds supporter from Day #1. She has tonight and tonight only to get this right or she will be going home this week.

Adam Lambert is on track to destroy the competition. He right now is head and shoulders the best contestant since Carrie Underwood.

My impressions of tonight's performances:

1. Allison - I Don't Wamt to Miss a Thing - If you're going to do an Aerosmith classic, you have to be able to do it better than Steven Tyler - and that's just not something you're gonna hear very often. I wasn't impressed. 7

2. Anoop - Everything I do - Possibly his best performance. He took Tarantino's advice but there's still room for improvement. 8

3. Adam - Born to Be Wild - I spent one whole summer driving around with this song blaring as loud as I could get it. I'd do it again with this version in a heartbeat. Adam rocks...and he's about the most creative constestant ever. He knows who he is and he'll make a great American Idol. 10

4. Matt - Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman - Following an Adam Lambert performance is tough under the best of circumstances. This song doesn't do much for me and Matt's performance was just adequate. 7

5. Danny - Endless Love - He really needs to get away from the love ballads. And soon. This was possibly his weakest performance, primarily because he didn't bring anything new or different to the table. Good but totally predictable. 8

6. Kris - Falling Slowly - A very tough song to sing where the first notes are critical. He didn't nail them and I think he's going to regret the song choice. 7

7. Lil - The Rose - Once again, she took a ballad that has such a strong presence associated with it that comparison is inevitable. The whole performance was pitchy. Her time has come to return to her family. 6

Quentin Tarantino clearly put a lot of effort into working with the hopefuls. His advice was right on target. I would have liked to see what his song choice would have been for some of the top 7.

My prediction is that Lil goes home.

Yawn... Didn't care about Matt, but I did think he did better than Lil so maybe saving him for one more week wasn't that bad.

I think Lil is a lock to go home and I'm guessing Kris will probably not be able to pull off disco, meaning he'll follow her out the door.

SLAB

Hall of Famer
Ive honestly tuned this season mostly out because I don't get all the Lambert love.

But Ill say. I didnt *HATE* his performance the other night. It was decent until he got into his shrieky over-the-top thing he always does.
And I must say, if the show was broadcasted without sound, that would possibly have been my most favorite AM-Idol performance ever. He can make a nice little scene with himself onstage.

I kind of have him pegged as a 1970's old school rock/metal frontman. His wail is epic (though clearly not my style) and it will take him places.

The save was pointless. The whole concept of the save was based off people who should not have gone home early like Hudson and Daughtry. Matt doesn't come close to their talent.

I had Matt as the last of my top 5 which in theory means you use the save on him in the last two weeks. But I think it was a waste. I am thinking they were going to use the save no matter what - normally when they get to 7 they do the "Huff" trick where they make one person pick the safe group. They didn't do that this time, though Ryan tried to fake out every person multiple times on their fate. Does this actually fool anyone over the age of 5???

Did they go back to live performances on the group sings or just do a better job of lip synching? There were some really bad notes in this one (Danny's high "note") but also a few spots where it looked like the singer was not singing (Matt). My wife likes to sing Maniac to TJ when he kicks his feet around so I was pretty amused when this song came on, apparently he slept through it.

I hated Tuesdays show. Some of the songs last week were better suited for this week and then they could have done something better last week. Almost every song was just in my list of awful do not listen to songs, except Kris's which I had just never even heard. My rankings are unchanged from last week.

And of course they hated Hudson so they'd have never have saved her, and Daughtry (and Tamyra who they also featured) would have been excluded from the rule as they made the top 4. It will serve them right if there is a shocking boot next week that they can't save.
