All Time Kings Draft...on a Tropical Island?

Gah!

I had my two players all picked out, but as I start my writeups I have trouble finding good things to say and I look at other players out there and focus on what they do better. Now I don't know why I picked those players any more...

Gah!!

Picks coming shortly.

Gah! Still can't decide... now the family needs me to get off the computer and help them with some chores. Gah!!

I guess it's coin flip time. I wish people had taken the players I am considering except for two. Would've made the decision easier.

Pete Chilcutt 1993-1994

Important Stats

46 Games (traded midseason)
7.3 Points/G
5.9 Rebounds/G

So I needed a back up big. I was looking for someone who could rebound and who had enough size to cover center alongside Webber, but was still somewhat mobile. I thought Scot Pollard! But he was already taken, so I'm grabbing Pete Chilcutt. He didn't block shots like Pollard, but he had a great rebounding year with Kings before being traded midway through the season. I debated taking some other bigs still available, but in the end the coin flip landed on Chili.

Rory Sparrow 1990-1991

Important Stats

80 Games
10.4 Points/G
4.5 Assists/G
1.0 Steals/G
49.1 FG%

Here I was looking for someone who could back up Edney and handle the ball a little bit. I also realized I have a ton of young guys, and wanted a veteran presence in the locker room. So I went with a guy who SI called "Good-guy point guard".

Full Stats (regular season w/ Kings):

Well, it's time for me to fill out my starting lineup. And while I really wanted Doug Christie to be my 6'6" perimeter defender (didn't we all) it was clearly not going to happen. Instead, I'll settle for another 6'6" perimeter defender, Nick Anderson ('99-'00).

Nick didn't spend much time with the Kings, and by the time he got here, his offensive game had gone straight downhill (check his percentages!). That's all right, because he's really not going to be asked to score for this team. Peja, KT, OP, Spud, Darius and even Jim Les can do that. Nick is going to be asked to keep the opponent's best perimeter player out of the paint - and he remained a pretty good defender even late in his career, averaging 1.3 steals a game in '99-'00. Behind Doug Christie and Bonzi, he had the third best defensive win share season of all SGs in Sac history (2.5 DWS), and that's why I picked him.

SG Nick Anderson ('99-'00) -- 72gms 29.1min 10.8pts (.391 .332 .487) 4.7reb 1.7ast 1.3stl 0.2blk 1.3TO

HA! hahahahahahahahaha! HA!

Why is this so hilarious to me?

I really like 2 or 3 guards that are left ( if someone is looking to trade there pick in this round let me know ) but I realize I just really need a Forward. So with my next pick I select:

Matt Barnes (2004-2005)

43gms 16.6min 3.8pts (.411 .227 .603) 3.1reb 1.3ast .07stl 0.2blk 1.05TO

He wasnt great for us, but he was solid enough off the bench. FG% was pretty good for a G/F. I know he'll give my team some effort every time hes on the court, I know he's tough. And for 16mpg thats enough for me. He likes to try on defense, which is always lovely.

EDIT: how close was I from picking someone else? For a few seconds there, I had a different players picture up under Matt Barnes =]

Keeping with the good guy theme, I'm adding some size, skill, and character to my team. With my 8th pick, I select:

Bill Wennington 7'0" C
('90-91) -- 77gms 18.9mpg 5.7pts (.436 .787 .200) 4.4reb .9ast .6stl .77blk .66TO

It's always good to add a 7 footer to the roster, especially this late in the game. Wennington is a skilled offensive player who can play the garbage game, taking up space, set good hard screens for the motion offense, pass the ball well, and hit the open 15 footer. Nothing fancy, but another solid piece to help this team. Now my front line is set. Skill, size, activity, and depth.

With their 8th pick and the 89th overall pick in the 2010 All Time Sacramento Kings Draft the “Droids for Clunkers” select

Brad Lohaus, C / PF, 6' 11'', 230
Season: 1988-89. 77gms* 16.4min 8.0pts (.431 .143 .807) 3.9reb 0.6ast 0.3stl 1.0blk 1.0TO
Time is running out. So have the good players. Beware; we are heading into the abyss…
Just before this thing goes completely out of control (I am really looking forward to see how we “promote” our “stars” coming in the last rounds) I had to find another big guy who can give a few minutes rest to my front line. Obviously the supply was not extremely exciting. Nevertheless I am taking another big body that can collect a few boards, block and make shots at a good clip (he was even a decent 3pt shooter - .361 is his career avg). Coming from the mighty basketball force that is Iowa Brad will do all that off the bench. It is as good as it gets at this stage.

Well then. I played chicken and survived on this, but just barely:

G Travis Mays

('90-91) 64gms 33.5min
14.3pts (.401 .365 .770) 2.8reb 4.0ast 1.3stl 0.2blk 2.5TO

Well, the last of the starting PG types, and I was so enthused about my choices there that I drafted my top three bench defenders (including my backup PG) before bothering to take a starting point. I had assumed that the last man standing would be Sparrow or Johnson, and I was going to be ok with those guys. But then certain incompetent people started bumbling around stumbling into those guys as backup PGs and well...Travis Mays is who I've got, and I suppose I should feel grateful given the falloff behind him. Had talent, especially as a scorer (big college scorer held all of Texas's records until Durant came along). Also had an attitude, which is something I have been trying to avoid given that Artest is my linchpin. Not a pure point -- in fact really a scoring guard forced to play PG because he was a runt. The classic tweener guard. But he's who I've got, and looking on the bright side, actually fits my team a bit with some decent defense and a powerful build (for a PG). In fact, after reading this old article about him, I am warming to him as we speak:

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1990-06-21/news/9001140883_1_travis-mays-mays-wasn-t-shooting-guard

The key lines in there: "He was equally impressive defensively, slashed hard to the basket and showed he could play some point guard.
And when he played, it was all-out, all the time. Before the tournament was over, some were comparing Mays to Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars."

Accordingly when voting comes aroudn I expect to be given credit for having nabbed Joe Dumars in Rnd 8, and may even just list Joe's stats in lieu of Travis's as a reminder.

Hall of Famer
Well I have a scoring swing on my bench already, now it is time to go with a guy who will be able to defend whatever backup players (aka, scrubs) are thrown his way.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad

98/99: 49games, 9.3pts, (.435, .691, .286), 3.8rpg, 1.0apg

I had two guys that I was going back and fourth over for this pick, but I'm going to big over small. Always go big over small.

I select:

Anthony Bonner
Very good athlete and very strong. Only 6'8'' but was an effective PF in limited minutes. He'll be coming off the bench for me so he should keep a similar production. I needed another strong guy who could rebound and play some defense, and I think I got that, which is a steal for this round.

Ah there ya go! I was getting a little worried when you didn't pick a SF for two rounds in a row. :p

Solid pick BTW -- he was on my list as the only species of defensive specialist I don't have yet -- the 2/3.

"You were named Tournament MVP for shutting down big, bad Patrick Ewing. How'd you do it?"

Here's my next pick:

Ed Pinckney

1988-1989 51 games 12.3ppg (.502 .801 .000), 5.9 rpg, 1.5 apg

Is that you dunking over Ewing? Yes.
Oh yeah, he played for the Kings, too. A nice pick this late in the game, if I do say so myself.

Too bad -- I saw that season slipping and slipping while all kinds of shaky characters were being taken and I was kind of holding out hope that somehow he'd slip back around to me, even though he'd be largely duplicative with Tyler. He was really solid for us that half season...which of course in those days meant that we had to immediately trade him. :p

Solid pick.

I was going back and forth on this pick with 3 different guys. But I can't ignore the solid season this guy can give me. I also need a 3rd big.

Mark Olberding (1985-1986)

81 games, 7.6 ppg (55%, 77% line, 000 3p%,) 5.2 rpg, 3.3 apg.

Solid. Consistent. Smart. AND just. plain. mean.

Something I think my team needs. I love the fact that he shoots a high % and can pass the ball. That's essential in a Adelman system.

I am guessing from the rest of your picks you are probably younger rather than older, so let me just tip you off that you just added considerable toughness -- your solid consistent smart guy was just plum dog mean. :p

Before joining the Kings franchise he was part of a lineup known as "The Bruise Brothers". Undersized by today's standards, but maybe think of Najera.

Fixed. :p

My Pick:

Ralph Sampson - '89-'90

7'4" You can't teach height, even if his knees were shot. Probably useful for 10 minutes a game.

Ralph Sampson is my pick. Someone PM willy blake for me, i'm not home

I'll do it.

Thanks for showing up -- I think we are the first TDOS draft that has not had a timeout yet, and I was getting a little worried the streak was going to break. :)

P.S. Whicvh of Ralph's wonderful seasons?

('87-88) -- 37gms 23.9min 14.2pts (.421 .340 .771) 3.0reb 1.6ast 1.3stl 0.2blk 1.6TO
Good shooter, can definitely steal balls and play some defense. Will be the backup at both small forward and shooting guard positions.

Vinny del Negro
('89-90) -- 76gms 24.4min 9.7pts (.462 .313 .871) 2.6reb 3.3ast 0.8stl 0.1blk 1.5TO
Another shooter off the bench to cover up for Theus' and Evans' lack of 3pt range, can also pass the ball. Will be the back up at both point guard and shooting guard position.

Those two complete the 8 men rotation I had in mind and will take the majority of minutes, still need to pick a backup center though, it's going to be hard to find one that at least resembles a basketball player.
