Wait.. isn't it common knowledge that the Kings had only two options to spend on free agency -- the non-taxpayer MLE (~$10M) and BAE (~4M)? You are not getting any premier FA with that money. The Kings just spent around 9M on Monk and have have roughly around 5M to spend around for bargain players, if needed.

If the 1 star you were getting was better than either of the other 2 and younger -- it makes sense. Because you have time to try to build around the one star e.g. LBJ or KD during their 1st 2-3 seasons.
But the flip side is -- why would the team owning their rights want to trade that player? Hence it would cost a lot more than 2 stars if it were even possibly at all.
Obviously wasn't common knowledge to me. I don't pay much attention to the cap stuff. I just figured we would have more money since we just have a bunch of crappy players.
You love to see it.
Vlade already fell on his sword for that one anyway and Marvin got $37 million guaranteed for being really tall and bouncy (and I'm sure there's more 3-year deals in his future as long as he keeps showing up and looking like an NBA player) so he'll be just fine.

Unfortunately Buddy was also 28 when we thought he was 23 and his irrational confidence aged into vinegar rather than fine wine. I was one of the fans who defended the Buddy extension when it happened but in retrospect that ended up being a crippling move for us which wasted the second half of Fox's rookie contract years.

Well, the good news(?) is that next year we would have good cap space. The only avenue left for the Kings to improve the team is the trade market, which is now on hold due to KD.

It's been less than 24 hours since the start of free agency but I'm already nominating this for "quote of the off-season" enshrinement!

I've been saying he's soft and heartless for a long time. To me, he and LBJ are the ring leaders of this current fragile ego era. They can't handle being called out or questioned. Or not being beloved.
It was crystal clear to me from the beginning that KD jumped ship to the Warriors because he was so in fear of being the next Charles Barkley. And he couldn't handle hearing and dealing with that. Same goes for LBJ teaming up in MIA after years of coming up short in CLE.
At the time those guys made the decisions to bail on the teams that drafted them and team up elsehwere, they didn't care if they had to hear about selling out or front running. Because they'd have a ring and nobody could take it away.
But now that they are hearing the criticism that comes along with front running and teaming up --- they suddenly care a lot. They don't like it. Specifically KD.
He already knew the titles he was part of were suspect. Steph and GSW winning again w/o him just turned up the heat. And his biological clock <STOMP><STOMP><STOMP> is ticking like this!!!!

I wonder if Cam Reddish is still available. Knicks don’t even seem to like him so if we could get him for a bunch of 2nds I’d be in. Provide some wing depth with some player development upside for Mike Brown to work with. I think most trades are gonna be at a standstill till KD makes his move, kind of annoying haha.

Barf! They're both players that their teams theoretically can't afford to lose but holy cow, these supermax contracts are basically death sentences for those fan bases. Now I'm not only glad that I don't root for Brooklyn but also Washington, Minnesota, or Phoenix. We may have started the year at the bottom but we're moving up the franchise ladder at a rapid rate! Sure that's because teams keep breaking their leg and falling off the ladder completely but I'll take any silver lining I can get at this point. When a fan of a team with a 16 year playoff absence is looking at you and thinking "it could be worse" .. something has seriously gone wrong.

Most of our movement was going to have to be through trades. But man, adding Monk/Murray and losing DDV/Jones isn't really moving the needle forward all that much. We're better, but certainly not to the extent where we need to be to push us into being a serious playoff contender. We're basically hoping all our growth is through coach Brown, Mitchell year 2, Holmes rebounds back to form, Holiday rebounds back to form, Fox deciding to play defense in year 6 and Murray being a ROY candidate. And with Jones walking, we actually need to keep Holmes at this point or we're creating another serious hole at the back-up 5. Can we trust Len/Queta to fill those minutes? Maybe?
Need a Martin, Okogie type badly. Sounds like GPII predictably is out of our price range now.

I will not, and cannot overrate the value of them finally having an offseason without the cloud of a holdover coach hanging overhead. This is for sure it for Monte though. It's all or nothing. And considering that center slot is slated to get around 16 mpg max likely Len would be more than fine IMO. Plus Metu could play there as a decent stretch big. You can always find a Jones level backup. Heck, the Lakers found it twice, lol.

We don’t know what we’re getting in Murray yet. To say he isn’t moving the needle is a bit strange considering he has yet to play a single minute IMO

Murray could end up a star but probably will only have minor impact year one.
It’s been a long time since we had a season that wasn’t a total dumpster fire. At least give us a competent squad this year
It's not a slight on Murray, it's just trusting historical context where it's basically universal that rookies aren't impactful towards winning games. I think Murray will actually have a better chance than most to be valuable his first year, but depending on him being the 5-6 win difference to make the playoffs from last year just isn't going to happen.

I agree, but thats almost every rookie in history not named Jordan or LeBron though. This was always on Fox and Sabonis. If his shooting and offense translate it should help even if he's not moving the needle much on his own.
Really need a Martin. Okogie is so bad on offense that he's a net negative.

To be fair, it is very rare to get a real needle-mover with the MLE anyway.
Also, why are we ignoring possible improvements from Sabonis and TD? I think this team can grow organically to be a playoff team under a good coach.
