It's an asset. Why waste it on a position we have zero need for?
Doesn't it make more sense to draft a player that will be in the league in two years? I mean in terms of an asset.....

really disappointed. we still have that gigantic hole at SF. we have so many guards that would give smart a stiffy. we were rumored to buy a second which we didn't do. wtf

Cole Aldrich > Whitney
If we keep Cole ...
I'm a fan of his. I was when the Thunder drafted him, and I felt a little vindicated when he came here and played well.
But if the team doesn't sign him than it doesn't matter who's better.

my point was if Cole isn't worth keeping then Whitney isn't worth drafting.
A little premature to bring out the pitchforks.
Free agency hasn't even started and our GM has only been on the job for a couple weeks.

Right, but Cole could be worth keeping without PDA keeping him. Withey could be worth drafting even though PDA didn't draft him. He's not going to be right all the time. And taking another scoring guard over a defending big man is just ... not great. It says a lot about what he values.
It's not the be all end all, but it's an alarming start in my opinion.

I agree with ya. Could be they have an eye on a defensive free agent and expect to sign him. Could be they really think this guy has a lot of potential. Could be a trade is lined up for a combination of our guards and they wanted a backup ball handler. Lots of ways this can make sense.

I can't understand why anyone would think it is a good idea to draft for need in the 2nd round. You're doing well to draft a player in the 2nd that even makes the roster, so you don't really have the luxury of being picky about who you take. Besides it isn't like we need some second round pick to come in right away and fill a need. If we have a glut of players at a position then you can just stash him in the d-league.
Backup level guards aren't traded that much. They're usually pretty easy to acquire without needing trades. Moving two backup guards in a trade is even rarer. The easiest way to move backup guards is for picks on draft day. If not then, then it becomes extremely difficult and many times you'd have guard(s) coming back in return, like Brooks going and Douglas coming.
But trading backup guards for SF's and PF's is just rare, and we'd need to do it in 2-3 trades. I think some believe clearing our backcourt will be much easier than it is in reality.
Amnesty Thorton. Trade Jimmer (who has some value.) Problem solved.
I'm getting really perplexed by these questions. Why draft someone you need instead of a guy that doesn't fill any need at all? Really?
This is a high second pick not a last 10 that you just take anyone you may like.

Because the chance of success from guys coming this low in the draft is so bad you pick whoever you think has the best chance of making it. For whatever reason they liked this kid.

What kind of success will he have with Jimmer/IT/Reke all looking for mins at PG? Exactly where is the upside even if he can play at this level?
